ST ALBANS U3A LIBRARY OF WALKS Walk 0001 Stocking Springs Wood and Ayot St Lawrence Approximate Distance 2 miles (3.2km) Type of Walk Linear (1 mile there 1 mile back) Gradients This walk is relatively flat and there are no hilly areas Brief Description of This is a straight there and back walk starting and ending in Ayot St Lawrence. Walk The focus is a coppiced hornbeam wood with native wild daffodils which appear at the end of March with bluebells later in April/May. There are also three points of particular interest in this area which are in the village close to where you have parked: Conditions This path can get very muddy when it has rained! Starting Point Starting Point with Post Code: AL6 9BT The Brocket Arms is an excellent pub to visit, there tends to be plenty of parking on the road outside. https://www.brocketarms.com/ Location of Brocket Arms Link to Map of Walk See page 2 for map of walk Walk Instructions Park by Old St Lawrence Church on the road opposite the Brocket Arms Pub. Walk back towards a red telephone box and continue down the hill (keeping left past the road on the right that leads to Shaw's Corner) until you reach a public bridleway going left (see image on page 2). Take this bridleway down to the woods. The way back is to re-trace your steps. At this point you can visit Shaw’s Corner (National Trust fees apply) or the two churches (both of which can be seen from the road). The Old Church is a Grade 11 listed building, the New Church a Palladian Church with a fascinating history! It is worth opening the door and peeping inside. 9 CYCLING DISCOVERY MAP Starting point: Welwyn, Hertfordshire Distance: 25 miles/40 km (or with short cut 20 miles/32 km) Type of route: Day ride - moderate, circular; on roads LITERARY LANDSCAPES Part of the Great North Way This cycle ride (part of the Great North Way) starts from the historic town of Welwyn. From here the route heads west along the valley of the River Mimram, into the foothills of The Chilterns, an area of unspoilt countryside retaining its rural atmosphere. Linked along narrow lanes are pretty villages, farmsteads and bluebell rich woodlands. This probably gave literary inspiration to playwright George Bernard Shaw whose hidden retreat can be visited. Along this route you can discover a 3rd C. Roman bathing suite, wander in the gardens of the late Queen Mother’s childhood home and explore Sir Lionel’s Palladian church. Section 5: Admission Rules for Community and Voluntary-Controlled
Cheshunt School Admission arrangements for 2016/17 The school will have a published admission number of 150 Section 324 of the Education Act 1996 requires the governing bodies of all maintained schools to admit a child with a statement of special educational needs that names their school. All schools must also admit children with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) that names the school. Rule 1 Children looked after and children who were previously looked after, but ceased to be so because they were adopted (or became subject to a child arrangement order or a special guardianship order). Rule 2 Medical or Social: Children for whom it can be demonstrated that they have a particular medical or social need to go to the school. A panel of Hertfordshire Admissions and Transport Officers will determine whether the evidence provided is sufficiently compelling to meet the requirements for this rule on behalf of the Governors. The evidence must relate specifically to the school applied for under Rule 2 and must clearly demonstrate why it is the only school that can meet the child’s needs. Rule 3 Sibling: Children who have a sibling at the school at the time of application (including children looked after and/or previously looked after), unless the sibling is in the last year of the normal age-range of the school. Note: the ‘normal age range’ is the designated range for which the school provides, for example Years 7 to 11 in a 11-16 secondary school, Years 7 to 13 in a 11-18 school.

Mr. Cussans twenty years ago wrote:— "At Essendon Place is preserved a large collection of local sketches, the value of which it would be difficult to over estimate. They were made about the year 1797, by a schoolmaster of Tewin, named Pridmore, and are bound in nine thick volumes. The collection consists of coloured views of nearly all the Gentlemen's Seats in the 30 S. ALBAXS AND HEliTs ARCHITECTURAL AXD ARCHvKOLOGlC AL SOCIETY County; all the Churches, and principal monuments within them, together with objects of antiquarian interest, such as old stained glass, windows, rood screens, fonts, etc. One volume is devoted to the Coats of Arms of Hertfordshire families. These volumes bear witness to the fearful destruction of ancient monuments which has taken place during the last eighty years. Modern restorers have as much to answer for as the popularly abused soldiers of Cromwell, destroyers as they were. It seems incredible that scores of Churches in this County, which now possess as much Archaeological interest as the waiting-room of a railway station, should less than a century ago have been rich in brasses, stained glass, and exquisite carvings in wood and stone : yet such is the case."* In the year 1884, Baron Dimsdale allowed the Rev. Dr. Griffith to have copies taken from the collection, relating to his Parish of Sandridge. DETERMINATION Case reference: ADA 3214 Objector: A representative of two local parishes Admission Authority: St George’s School, Harpenden Academy Trust Date of decision: 18 July 2016 Determination In accordance with section 88H(4) of the School Standards and Framework Act 1998, I do not uphold the objection to the admission arrangements for September 2017 determined by St George’s School Harpenden Academy Trust for St George’s School, Harpenden, Hertfordshire. I have also considered the arrangements in accordance with section 88I(5) and find there are other matters which do not conform with the requirements relating to admission arrangements in the ways set out in this determination. By virtue of section 88K(2) the adjudicator’s decision is binding on the admission authority. The School Admissions Code requires the admission authority to revise its admission arrangements within two months of the date of the determination unless an alternative timescale is specified by the adjudicator. In this case I determine that the arrangements must be revised by 31 August 2016. The referral 1. Under section 88H(2) of the School Standards and Framework Act 1998, (the Act), an objection has been referred to the adjudicator by a representative of two local parishes (the objector), about the admission arrangements (the arrangements) for St George’s School Harpenden, a multi-denominational Christian academy co-educational day and boarding school, for pupils between the ages of 11 and 18, in the local authority area of Hertfordshire (the LA). The objection is to the removal from the arrangements of a protected allocation of places to named civil parishes and to perceived unfairness in the consultation process that led to this decision.

Historic village, churches, woodland, easy field paths, green meadows In Brief This is a grand scenic walk in central Hertfordshire with a great variety of features, centred on two contrasting villages. Kimpton stands among open fields with a cluster of red roofs and its church with a distinctive “Hertford- shire spike” perched on top. Ayot St. Lawrence, secluded and hard to reach down narrow lanes, is famous as the residence of the progressive Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw (author of Pygmalion , the basis of My Fair Lady , amongst many others). In between, there are wooded sections and some out-of-the-way paths where you might not meet another soul. There is just one patch with nettles on this walk, but not dense enough to cause too much discomfort if you are wearing shorts. The paths are generally quite firm and fairly dry so boots are recommended but not essential. There's no reason why your dog should not accompany you. The walk begins in the village of Kimpton , near Harpenden and Welwyn, Herts, in the lane beside the church, postcode SG4 8RR .
