campus diary January - February - March 2019 campus diary January - February - March 2019 http://www.iitb.ac.in/en/activities/campus-diary I N D I A N I N S T I T U T E O F T E C H N O L O G Y B O M B A Y IIT Bombay Celebrates 60th Foundation Day Institute releases Diamond Jubilee Brochure, Book on Chair Professors and Infrastructure Calendar * 14 received Distinguished Alumnus Awards * 8 honored with Young Alumnus Achiever Awards * 2 faculty members awarded for excellence in research work Dignitaries along with the recipients of awards during 60th Foundation Day Celebrations Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) celebrated its 60th Foundation Day on March 8, 2019. The foundation stone for the internationally-recognized Institute was laid by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, then Prime Minister of India on March 10, 1959. IIT Bombay was the second IIT to be established in the country and the first one to be established with a foreign aid received from UNESCO. Since then, the Institute has grown from strength to strength and is now counted among the best engineering institutions across the globe. The ceremony commenced with a welcome address by the former Director of IIT Bombay Professor Devang Khakhar, highlighting key milestones achieved by the Institute in 60 years. Welcoming the guests, he said, “The biggest change in the Institute is the trend of faculty from different Departments collaborating to form large multidisciplinary Centres to address particular areas. I am happy to announce that we have placed an order for a new supercomputer ‘Space Time’ that will provide a visible leap forward in our computer capabilities”. He also spoke about increased industry interactions, international engagements, entrepreneurship and increased alumni engagements”. On the occasion, the Chief Guest for the function former Director Prof. S.P. Sukhatme released the Diamond Jubilee Brochure, Book on Chair Professors and Infrastructure Calendar. The Institute celebrated 60th anniversary of its inception by honouring its select alumni for their achievements in diverse fields ranging from academics, research and entrepreneurship. The ‘Prof. S.C. Bhattacharya Award for Excellence in Research in Pure Sciences’ and ‘Prof. H.H. Mathur Award for Excellence in Research in Applied Sciences, and the Distinguished Alumnus Awards and Young Alumnus Achiever Awards’ were given away by Prof. Sukhatme. The Institute had long felt the need to recognize the alumni of IIT Bombay, who have excelled in their field of work and made the Institute proud. Bhattacharya Award for Excellence in Research in Pure Sciences’ was conferred on Prof. M. Ravikanth, Department of Chemistry. The ‘Prof. H.H. Mathur Award for Excellence in Research in Applied Sciences’ was conferred on Prof. Ashwin Gumaste, Department of Computer Science & Engineering. The Young Alumnus Achiever Awards (YAAA) are for alumni who have made outstanding achievements in their chosen field of work and are below 40 years of age. These awards were instituted in the year 2011. The awardees this year include: • Dr. Ameet Jain • Mr. Shantanu Rastogi • Dr. Parag Agrawal • Mr. Sourabh Pagaria • Mr. Pranay Jivrajka • Mr. Ankit Bhati • Mr. Manoj Meena • Ms. Suhani Mohan About Book On Chair Professors: The Chair Professorships have a rich history and prestige that has remained unchanged over the years. The Named Chair Professorship encourages faculty excellence and sparks innovation in teaching, research and scholarship. It is one of the highest honours awarded in the academic arena. It is reserved for the top faculty members as an acknowledgement of their contributions to research and teaching. The prestige of a Named Chair also lends an additional cachet to the departments. It helps attract the brightest students and investigators thus securing the future of the Institution. Through these chair professorships, the recruitment of accomplished researchers in specific areas of study will also usher in new areas of specialization. Mr. Abhay Pandey, IIT Bombay alumnus presenting a Dr. Veena Joshi, IIT Bombay alumnus presenting a cheque cheque of Rs.10 crore to former Director Prof. Devang of Rs. 2 crore to former Director Prof. Devang Khakhar for Khakhar in support of the construction of the Humanities & setting up the Dhananjay Joshi Endowment Fund, that aims Social Sciences (HSS) Annex building at IIT Bombay to breed research scholars through fundamental research Appointments to the Chairs are made by a committee headed by the Director of IIT Bombay, with field experts and Institute functionaries as members and a nominee of the donor as an observer in case of named chairs. Selection is based on peer reviews of the overall research achievements and other achievements in the recent past. Contributions made to the growth of the Institute are given due weightage. About Infrastructure Calendar: The Diamond Jubilee Infrastructure Calendar of IIT Bombay provides a glimpse of the landmark buildings on campus that have recently been completed like Hostel 10, Hostel 15 & 16 and Padmavihar guest house. Some other buildings like Research Park Building, Rahul Bajaj Technology Innovation Centre, Hostels 17 & 18, B25 Residential Building, Married Students Accommodation and Centre for Excellence in Steel Technology will adorn the campus soon. About Diamond Jubilee Brochure: The brochure on Diamond Jubilee provides a glimpse of all the activities and projects undertaken by various Task Forces during the year. Messages from the Hon’ble President of India, Prime Minister of India, Governor of Maharashtra, Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Chairman of Board of Governors Mr. Dilip Shanghvi, former Directors of IIT Bombay Prof. A.K. De and Prof. Ashok Misra will continue to inspire us all. 2 campus diary January - February - March 2019 57th Interim Convocation Ceremony Former Director IIT Bombay Prof. D.V. Total degrees awarded were 195, which include 118 PhD, 1 Joint PhD degree of IIT Bombay and National University of Singapore, 54 Dual Degrees (27 MTech/ MSc + 27 PhD) awarded to 27 students and 22 E-MBA degrees. The joint E-MBA degrees, in association with Washington University in St. Louis (WUStL), were conferred by Prof. Mark Taylor, Dean, Olin Business School, Washington University in St. Louis. The degrees were conferred upon those PhD students who have completed all the requirements during the period from August 2018 to January 2019 and have requested for the degree to be awarded earlier than the 57th Convocation. The function was presided by Mr. Dilip Shanghvi, Chairman of the Board of Governors, IIT Bombay and Prof. Devang V. Khakhar, former Director, IIT Bombay among others. There is a steady increase observed in the number of PhD students at IIT Bombay. While there were only 771 PhD students on roll in the academic year 2001-02, the number increased to 3083 in 2017- 18. The number of PhD students at the Institute has increased to 3171 in 2018-19. In his address, Chairman of the Board of Governors, IIT Bombay Mr. Dilip Shanghvi said, “You are graduating from a top-ranking Institute of the world. The time you have spent here has enriched you in many ways and now you are going to carve your way in the outside world. Wherever you go, I hope you will excel in life. I’m confident that the training and education you have received here will help you to face all the challenges outside.” Congratulating the graduating students, former Director of IIT Bombay Prof. Devang Khakhar said, “IIT Bombay continues to be most sought-after destination for undergraduate and postgraduate studies. I’m really happy to see you ready to start a new and exciting phase of life. We congratulate all the parents and acknowledge the sacrifices they have made. It is also a day of joy and satisfaction for my colleagues among the faculty and staff”. Apart from the students and faculty members of the Institute, the ceremony was attended by the families and friends of the students. 3 campus diary January - February - March 2019 Hon’ble Prime Minister of India Inaugurates National Salt Satyagraha Memorial Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi at the inauguration of National Salt Satyagraha Memorial at Dandi on the occasion of the 71st death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi Hon’ble Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi dedicated the Salt Satyagraha Memorial (NSSM) in Dandi, Gujarat to the nation on January 30, 2019. At the memorial site, he also unveiled statues of Mahatma Gandhi and 80 Satyagrahis who had marched with him during the historic Dandi Salt March in 1930 to make salt from sea water against the British law. IIT Bombay’s association with the NSSM began because of IIT Bombay’s pioneering research in renewable energy. The Memorial is being powered by solar energy and is a Zero Energy project in keeping with the Gandhian ideal of sustainability. Prof. Juzer Vasi initiated IIT Bombay’s contribution towards the solar energy needs of the project and Prof. Kirti Trivedi conceptualized the design and ably guided the art aspects of the NSSM.
