INFORMATION TO USERS The most advanced technology has been used to photograph and reproduce this manuscript from the microfilm master. UMI films the text directly from the original or copy submitted. Thus, some thesis and dissertation copies are in typewriter face, while others may be from any type of computer printer. The quality of this reproduction is dependent upon the quality of the copy submitted. Broken or indistinct print, colored or poor quality illustrations and photographs, print bleedthrough, substandard margins, and improper alignment can adversely affect reproduction. In the unlikely event that the author did not send UMI a complete manuscript and there are missing pages, these will be noted. Also, if unauthorized copyright material had to be removed, a note will indicate the deletion. Oversize materials (e.g., maps, drawings, charts) are reproduced by sectioning the original, beginning at the upper left-hand corner and continuing from left to right in equal sections with small overlaps. Each original is also photographed in one exposure and is included in reduced form at the back of the book. Photographs included in the original manuscript have been reproduced xerographically in this copy. Higher quality 6" x 9" black and white photographic prints are available for any photographs or illustrations appearing in this copy for an additional charge. Contact UMI directly to order. Nauvoo young Joseph . Smith was quietly working and studying; some- I times thinking, too, about the work of his father. There were men who talked to him about going out to the western land and joining the rejected church, where he had every reason to think he would be treated almost like a king; but he knew how his mother had op posed that church and her reasons for doing it. There really was no particular thing out there that he de sired; but he grew to believe that somewhere in the world there was a wm'k for him to do and that work was with his father's church. He was married October 22, 1856, to a young woman named Emma Griswold. They went to the farm co live, and about a week later George A. Smith and Erastus Snow, from the rejected church, came to call on young Joseph. They invited him to come to Utah, but he told them he could not come to that church and be part of it while it taught things that were not right according to the Book of Mormon.

They are now located in the Administration Building, 303 D. This new central location will improve access and expand resources for faculty, staff, and others. It is our hope that utilization of these programs will continue to grow, giving students the edge when applying for graduate schools and job positions. By engaging in the opportunities offered by these programs, students can expect to broaden their book knowledge through conducting original research and serving in the community, putting their skills to the test. Earl Mulderink, Director of the Service Learning & Civic Engagement Program, has had a busy and successful summer. Through his efforts, the workshop “Toward a More Engaged Campus,” which featured two nationally- known service-learning experts, Nadinne Cruz and Kathleen Rice, was presented to faculty, students, administrators, and community members. We applaud his work and diligence in bringing his program to the forefront of educa- tion at SUU. Lynn White, Director of the Undergraduate Research & Scholarship Program, has also worked with great dili- gence this summer preparing for the upcoming school year. Her display (shown below) captures just a few of the amazing projects and opportunities that are available within her program. We encourage faculty members to take advantage of and inform your students of the exceptional opportunities available to them through participation in these pro- grams.

The painting was part of Christensen’s “Mormon Panorama.” Metcalfe: Patterson O’Banion and the Battle of Crooked River 109 “Firm and Steadfast in the Faith”: Patterson O’Banion and the Battle of Crooked River Erin B. Metcalfe During the early morning hours of October 25, 1838, in Ray County, Missouri, a battle erupted between a Mormon militia from Caldwell County commanded by David W. Patten and a militia company from Ray County commanded by Samuel Bogart. Known as the Battle of Crooked River, in its aftermath, seven Mormons were wounded and three died, including Patten, Gideon Carter, and Patterson O’Banion.1 Though later referred to by some as being a non-Mormon scout for the Mormons, O’Banion died “firm and stead- fast in the faith,” bearing “a strong testimony to the truth of Mormonism.”2 Patterson O’Banion Genealogy and Family Background Patterson O’Banion, also known in Mormon history as Patrick O’Bannion, was born in 1820, in Washington County, Kentucky, the oldest child of Evins and Margaret Hall O’Banion. In 1702, Patterson’s great-great-grandfather, Bryant O’Bannon, emigrated from Kings County, Ireland, to Fauquier County, Virginia. By the early 1790s the James O’Banion line had relocated to Washington County, Kentucky. It was here in 1799 that Patterson’s father, Evins O’Banion, was born.3 ERIN B.
