I shall never see Worcester or enter the Library in which henceforth I should have the privilege of reading but I accept the position of membership with gratitude and pleasure." Many other English and Continental scholars have been more fortunate than Sir George and have spent happy and profitable hours within these walls. This summer as never before our reading room has, at times, been thronged with historical students occupying every available seat. The follower of the curious hobby of license plate hunting would have been richly re- warded by an examination of the cars parked about our building, for he would have found plates from almost every state in the union in the course of a few midsummer visits. As soon as the last college class has been dismissed many a historian packs his travelling bag and the notes for his forthcoming volume and turns the prow of his trusty car toward Worcester. The subjects of their inquiries are of infinite variety and all of their problems are interesting. A scholar from the University of Kansas wished to know when aerial photography began and was delighted when we produced a balloon photograph of Boston taken, believe it or not, in 1860. -

Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– ABSTRACT 3 ABSTRACT During the course of the nineteenth century children’s early reading experience was radically transformed; late eighteenth-century children were expected to cut their teeth on morally improving texts, while Victorian children learned to read more playfully through colourful picturebooks. This thesis explores the reasons for this paradigm change through a study of the key developments in children’s publishing from 1783 to 1900. Successively examining an amateur author, a commercial publisher, an innovative editor, and a brilliant illustrator with a strong interest in progressive theories of education, the thesis is alive to the multiplicity of influences on children’s reading over the century. Chapter One outlines the scope of the study. Chapter Two focuses on Ellenor Fenn’s graded dialogues, Cobwebs to catch flies (1783), initially marketed as part of a reading scheme, which remained in print for more than 120 years. Fenn’s highly original method of teaching reading through real stories, with its emphasis on simple words, large type, and high-quality pictures, laid the foundations for modern nursery books. Chapter Three examines John Harris, who issued a ground- breaking series of colour-illustrated rhyming stories and educational books in the 1810s, marketed as ‘Harris’s Cabinet of Amusement and Instruction’. -

He was recognised as a superb trade finisher, and Marianne Tidcombe has confirmed that he actually executed most of Sarah Prideaux's bindings from the mid-1890s. Elizabeth Garrett Anderson in context: the origins of the women’s movement in mid- Victorian Britain By Professor Lawrence Goldman In 1840 in London at the first World Anti-Slavery Convention, a woman rose to speak from the separate enclosure where all women attendees at the meeting had been corralled. There was consternation and uproar and she was silenced. The following day The Times carried an editorial on the meeting and made unkind remarks on the manners of our American cousins because the woman in question was from the United States. Her name was Elizabeth Cady Stanton and she is often compared with Millicent Garrett Fawcett, the equally famous sister of Elizabeth Garrett Anderson. Elizabeth Cady Stanton led the movement for women’s enfranchisement in America in the late-19th century and often attested that it was her treatment in London in 1840 which made her the leading American feminist of her generation. In Britain in 1840 no respectable woman would speak in public; that was the privilege of men only. Yet fast-forward to Birmingham in October 1857 and the opening congress of an organisation called the Social Science Association, and here, for the first time, 17 years later, a middle-class woman spoke in open and mixed company. Her name was Mary Carpenter and she spoke about her work rescuing street children in Bristol and educating them in so-called ragged schools. Miss Carpenter was already a famous female philanthropist and the audience for this landmark speech was so large that the meeting was delayed while everyone moved to a bigger venue. -

Whether or not he thought he was in the race for immortality when he published his little rhymes, A Child's Garden of Verses, first published in 1885, has proved to have great survival power. It is still available in all sorts of editions, vari- ously illustrated, and is still a preeminent choice of educators as well as of parents and care-givers. It is a book for children too young to express an opinion of its charms; but many of us re-open it as adults to discover just how deeply it has sunk into our pores. -

Banners in heraldic art Magnus Backrnark Abstract The banner is very useful to heraldic art. It is a carrier of charges and colours, just like its coun terpart the shield. But where the shield can be seen as crude, heavy, flat and robust - its purpose being taking hits- the banner is brilliant, swift, full of I ife and motion. Its purpose is spiritual. It is lifted above anyone's head, above dust and confusion, for inspiration and guiding. Something of this character, I will with this article try to show by examples that the heraldic artist, if lucky, can translate in his or her work. First, we could though take a quick glance at the historical development of banners. The term banner approves, as we shall see, to a specific kind of flag, but in a wide sense of the word a banner is any ensign made of a peace of cloth, carried on a staff and with symbolic value to its owner(s). The profound nature of this innovation, which seem to be of oriental origin, makes it the mother of all kinds of flags. The etymologi cal root of the word banner is the French word banniere, derived from latin bandaria, bandum, which has German extraction, related to gothic bandwa, bandw6, 'sign'. 1 The birth of heraldry in the l2 h century Western world was preceded by centuries of use of early forms of banners, called gonfanons. Signed declaration_________________________________________ Date_____________________ 3 Abstract This thesis examines the development of campaigning writing in newspapers and periodicals between 1840 and 1875 and its relationship to concepts of Old and New Journalism. Campaigning is often regarded as characteristic of the New Journalism of the fin de siècle, particularly in the form associated with W. T. Stead at the Pall Mall Gazette in the 1880s. New Journalism was persuasive, opinionated, and sensational. It displayed characteristics of the American mass-circulation press, including eye-catching headlines on newspaper front pages. The period covered by this thesis begins in 1840, with the Chartist Northern Star as the hub of a campaign on behalf of the leaders of the Newport rising of November 1839. -

University of South Carolina October-November. 2008· FOREWORD This exhibition welcomed to the University the Thirty-Ninth Annual Meeting of the Victorians Institute, a two-day conference bringing to Columbia nearly a hundred Victorian scholars from the south-east and across the United States. So many of the great writers of the Victorian age are still well-known names that myriads of others get overlooked or neglected. The University of South Carolina's Department of Rare Books & Special Collections has first editions and even manuscript material from many of the best-remembered Victorian writers, but it also preserves the writings of others who are now almost forgotten. In some cases, such lesser-known items may be even rarer than long-sought-after first editions by the most famous names. The current exhibition juxtaposes work by major Victorians, such as Charles Dickens, Alfred Tennyson, Charlotte Bronte, and George Eliot, with the work of some of these other · writers who deserve to be better-known.
