Related subjects: Engineers and inventors Johannes Gensfleisch zur Laden zum Gutenberg ( c. 1400 – February 3, 1468) was a German goldsmith and printer who is credited with inventing movable type printing in Europe around 1439 and Johannes Gensfleisch zur Laden zum mechanical printing globally. His major work, the Gutenberg Bible (also known as the 42-line Bible), has Gutenberg been acclaimed for its high aesthetic and technical quality. Among the specific contributions to printing that are attributed to Gutenberg are the design of metal movable type, the invention of a process for making such type in quantity (mass production), the use of oil-based ink, and the use of a wooden printing press similar to the screw olive and wine presses of the period. His truly epochal invention was the combination of these elements into a practical system. Gutenberg may have been familiar with printing; it is claimed that he had worked on copper engravings with an artist known as the Master of the Playing Cards . Gutenberg's method for making type is traditionally considered to have included a type metal alloy and a hand mould for casting type. It should be noted that new research may indicate that standardised moveable type was a more complex evolutionary process spread over multiple locations. The use of movable type was a marked improvement on the handwritten manuscript, which was the existing method of book production in Europe, and upon woodblock printing, and revolutionized European book-making. Gutenberg's printing technology spread rapidly throughout Europe and is considered a key factor in the European Renaissance. -

Performance in Special Collections.” I will admit that when the theme for the 2013 RBMS preconference was announced, I assumed that all of the papers would come from colleagues who work directly with performing arts col- lections. Given that I work at Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University, it might have been more promising for me if, instead of beginning “O Rare,” the title had begun “Orare,” the Latin verb to pray. But then I considered the first words of the conference abstract: Libraries house performance. Although the focus of the library where I work is not theater, film, music, or dance, it occurred to me that some of the most important treasures that we house, mid- fifteenth-century books from the earliest presses in Mainz, Germany, were most definitely printed for performance—religious performance, public performance, or classroom performance—where “performance” is defined simply as the read- ing of a text aloud for others who will derive a spiritual, social, or educational benefit from hearing it. Although these earliest of all printed books have been the subjects of intensive research into their significance within the history of typography, their performa- tive aspects have rarely been noticed, much less studied in detail.1 Given that performance was such an important aspect of later book production, this paper will explore how these early books, harbingers of a worldwide revolution in com- munications, were designed and prepared so that they could function within their intended interactive, public, or ceremonial context. -
