Several Decorations Listed in Figure 1 Were Awarded to Members of Special Units Several decorations listed in Figure 1 were awarded to members of special units. Except for the posthumous award to Corporal Denbury, "the London Gazette" does not name these individuals. In addition, no citation is listed for any of these awards. Figure 3 summarizes orders and decorations awarded to special units. Orders and Decorations awarded to Special Units. Members of the British Commonwealth who participated in the war with Iraq re- ceived the Gulf Medal. Two attachments may be awarded with this medal: "2 August 1990" bar, and "16 JAN TO 28 FEB 1991" bar. The Gazette does not state how many citizens of the British Commonwealth qualified for the Gulf Medal. How- ever, Charles P. McDowell and William C. Williams estimate in the October 1991 issue of "The Medal Collector" that approximately 65,000-70,000 medal will be awarded, 45,000 with a bar. The first Gulf Medal available for sale was auctioned at Wallis & Wallis on 5 May 1992. The gavel price for this Gulf Medal with "16 JAN TO 28 FEB 1991" bar to Pte. J. A. Middleton, RAMC was 260 pounds (about $480). To the gavel price must be added a 10% auction fee. The cost of the Gulf Meda~ should remain high for severa~ years, until considerably more enter the market. I have observed South Atlantic Medals (for the Falkland Islands campaign) priced between $185 to $475, depending on the recipient’s unit, rank, etc. South Atlantic Medals to KIA’s and SAS units can be significantly higher. There were approxi- mately 30,000 South Atlantic Medals issued. However, the demand for the Gulf Medal should be higher since this medal appeals to both British Campaign and Gulf War collectors. Therefore, it seems reasonable to estimate that the price of a Gulf War Medal may eventually be slightly lower than the South Atlantic Medal.     SOUTH ATLANTIC MEDAL ASSOCIATION - FALKLANDS RIDE OF RESPECT 2021 The Falklands War took place in 1982 and thus, we are approaching the 40th anniversary in 2022. In the last two years, a team of four Airborne Forces Riders (two of which are Falklands veterans) have conducted a ‘Ride of Respect’ in support of The South Atlantic Medal Association (SAMA82) Registered Charity No: 1118842, who continue to support the veterans of that short but costly war, and the families of those who were lost, including Merchant Seamen and Royal Fleet Auxiliary. AIM: The aim of the Ride of Respect is four-fold: Remembrance – to demonstrate that our fallen are not forgotten. Respect – for their families, the pain of the loss of a son, husband, or brother continues. Awareness – to let people know where our fallen lie so that they may also give due respect. Support – fundraising for SAMA82 whose continued support gives comfort to veterans and families. The ‘Ride of Respect’ over the last two years has given great comfort to the families of those who fell and has demonstrated that as we approach the 40th anniversary of the war and the loss of their loved one, we will remember them and continue to do so.     ANNEX: CLAIMS FOR MEDALLIC RECOGNITION The Arctic Convoys There are a number of exceptional circumstances which justify reconsideration of previous decisions not to award a separate medal to those who served on the Arctic Convoys (most received the Atlantic and/or the 1939-45 Star). The issue was not properly considered at the time and the facts previously relied on have been shown to be unsound: the Arctic Convoy operation was a separate campaign from everything that was happening in the Atlantic but it was never considered in that light; and some personnel who served on the Convoys have received no recognition at all. The Arctic Convoy veterans are therefore receiving a new medal called the Arctic Convoy Star. Bomber Command Those who served in Bomber Command were treated inconsistently with those who served in Fighter Command, who were awarded a separate clasp for their role in the Battle of Britain. The aircrews of Bomber Command are therefore being awarded a Bomber Command clasp, to be attached to the medal ribbon of the 1939-45 Star (with the insignia “B” attached when the ribbon alone is worn). The service of other aircrews who took part in bombing raids across Europe but who were not part of Bomber Command is fully recognised but does not render them eligible for this specifically Bomber Command clasp. HMS Concord Consideration has been given as to whether the crew of HMS Concord should be eligible for the Naval General Service Medal with clasp Yangtze 1949. Other crews who took part in the action in the Yangtze involving a Chinese attack on the RN destroyer HMS Amethyst in 1949 were awarded the clasp.
