Polka Town n a long weekend at the end of July every year a transformation takes place in the northeastern Wisconsin dairy-farming village of Pulaski. 0 Wire-and-lathing snow fences enclose the city park just past the small downtown commercial strip. Tent-covered dance floors and beer bars appear, food stands exude the aroma of Polish sausages on the grill, and Pulaski becomes, as promised in local musician Alvin Styczynski's song, the quintessen tial "polka town." Pulaski is a polka town With loads of boys and girls around. It's very plain to see, they're singing merrily Dancing and hopping up and down. Pulaski Polka Days are the biggest of many local dance events. Polka enthusiasts from miles around more than double the town's population of under two thou sand. From midday until late each night, at least two bands-one in the pavilion, the other in the tent-pump out polkas and an occasional waltz, oberek,or kujaw iak. As the trumpets, concertinas, electric bass, and drums blare at the ear-ring ing level to which modern sound systems have inured us, dancers whirl about the floor in sweeping counterclockwise circles . The dancers are old and young, teenagers in blue jeans and tee shirts, and farming folk sporting seed company baseball caps, print dresses, and billowy blouses and slacks. -

Polka As Counterhegemonic Ethnic Practice
PMS Article 2 Popular Music and Society, Vol. 27, No. 4, 2004 The Polka Alternative: Polka as Counterhegemonic Ethnic Practice Ann Hetzel Gunkel Introduction [C]ontemporary ethnic re-creations are given impetus by the fear not merely of being levelled into identical industrial hominids, but of losing an ethical (celestial) vision that might serve to renew the self and ethnic group as well as contribute to a richer, powerfully dynamic pluralist society. (Fischer 197) The purpose of this essay is to write a subversive historiography of polka.1 According to bell hooks, subversive historiography connects oppositional prac- tices from the past with forms of resistance in the present, thus creating spaces of possibility where the future can be imagined differently (Art 151).2 To achieve this, I want to revalue polka as a counterhegemonic ethnic practice.3 In fact, I will trace polka’s history to reveal its radical impetus. Over and against my project, the popular image of polka has remained remark- ably consistent both within Polonia (the Polish diaspora) and without. For many, linked in the popular imagination to the “Polish joke,” polka serves as a conve- nient emblem for stodgy, corny, moronic, and backward ethnic entertainment (Crease 73). “The Polish joke is a vestige of the racist eugenic theories of the early twentieth century and symbolizes the negative connotations associated with the Polish American ethnic identity: stupidity, vulgarity, racism, anti-Semitism, illit- eracy, and filth” (Erdmans 52). As Robert Crease has shown, polka’s history belies this image. That this perhaps goes against the grain of common sense is part of the larger project of subversive historiography.
