    ALEXANDE R HAMILTO N’ S AMERICA N REVOLUTION An Exhibition at the American Revolution Institute of the Society of the Cincinnati March 15 to September 16, 2018 ALEXANDER HAMILTON arrived in America in 1772 at the age of fifteen—a poor, self-taught, ambitious immigrant from the West Indies. He settled in New York City in the midst of the colonial crisis, when oppressive taxes and other policies pushed Americans to question British rule. Hamilton soon befriended prominent patriots and embraced the cause for independence in his adopted country. The American Revolution was a defining event in Alexander Hamilton’s life and influenced his vision for the nation. He fought the Revolutionary War as an energetic but inexperienced private in a volunteer militia unit, a battle-tested commander in the Continental Army, and the principal aide-de-camp to General George Washington. These experiences convinced Hamilton that the new nation needed a strong central government and national institutions for the union of states to survive. Hamilton was an important and unwavering force in the political revolution that produced the U.S. Constitution and the American form of government, ensuring that the ideals he had fought for would endure. After the war, Hamilton became an original member of the Society of the Cincinnati, an organization of veteran officers founded in 1783 to ensure that the principles of the Revolution and the sacrifices required to win American independence would not be forgotten. He believed that the Society—one of the few national organizations in the young country— was a valuable force for securing the future of the American republic.

    Title: No Trespassing! Grade Level: 6 – 8 Time Allotment: Two 45 minute class periods Overview: In the years immediately following the American Revolution, many citizens still felt ill-at-ease with the state of the union. Patriots felt the right to assert their victory over the land, and Loyalists felt oppressed and belittled over their defeat. This activity allows students to explore these tensions through one of Alexander Hamilton’s most famous and influential court cases from his time as a lawyer in New York City. Rutgers v. Waddington , in which Hamilton defended a Tory merchant, looked at several major issues of the time, such as relationships between Patriots and Loyalists, post-war legislation, and the burgeoning concept of judicial review. Students will re-enact the case in a “mock trial” setting, and learn more about the outcome and historical significance of the case using video segments from the PBS program Rediscovering Alexander Hamilton . As an optional extension activity, students can explore the modern implications of Hamilton’s Federalist Papers. This lesson is best used with students following a unit on the American Revolution. Objectives: Students will be able to: • Explain why the Trespass Act was declared unlawful; • Describe the conflicts between citizens that arose in the aftermath of the American Revolution; • Articulate multiple perspectives on a significant issue or event in history; • Demonstrate understandings of the verdict of the Rutgers v. Waddington case; • Discuss how the Rutgers v. Waddington case set a precedent for the practice of judicial review.     Alexander Hamilton Exhibition Tour Itinerary Important exhibit display information: The first date of your exhibit display period is a Thursday. The shipper will deliver the exhibit to you no later than Wednesday--the day before. You can schedule programs for Thursday evening, but please do not plan programs early on Thursday in case of delivery problems (they are rare, but do happen). Friday openings and programs are the best--you may open the exhibit whenever it suits your local schedule. This exhibit will take 2-3 people approximately 2-3 hours to unpack and set up. The last date in your exhibition period is a Friday, which should be the closing date for the exhibition (you may close the exhibit earlier if you wish). Because there is limited time available to get the exhibition from one site to another, libraries should have the exhibition dismantled and ready for pick-up on the Monday after the exhibition closes. This does not mean the shipper will always pick up the exhibit on Monday, but the exhibit should be ready to go on Monday morning.
