STATE LEAGUE PREVIEW

The Campbelltown versus East Sydney match will be the first in the QBE $ 1,000.00 challenge series.

State League Sponsors, QBE Insurance, has provided $ 1,000.00 prizes for a select se~ies of matches beginning this weekend for the winner of the Campbelltown/East Sydney clash. Another prize for the winner of this match will be the favourites title for flag. Of course the Bulldogs were runners up to Campbelltown in the 1988 Grand Final - so there could be more than a hint of revenge in the air. Campbelltown defeated East Sydney by an eight point margin this year - but on East Sydney's recent 54 point win over North Shore the Bulldogs have certainly improved a lot. The elusive Rod Podbury, the Campbelltown whiz, was best for Sydney in the recent State Championships at Broken Hill, in both games and surely will be the dangerman that the Bulldogs must contain. East Sydney got the very best out of their 'veterans' when they blew North Shore away by 54 points recently. He, of the colourful boots, Enzo Corvino, Rod Lewis and Jim Richardson were the triple threat, Corvino kicking nine goals with a great degree of style. Players who were Sydney teammates a fortnight ago in the State Championships meets a s opponents today which should make for some interesting match ups. The first round game between North Shore and Parramatta saw the 'new look' Goannas stake their claim for the most improved side in the QBE State League premiership. Both these sides will be the better for a couple of matches in a row, although the Bears with seven at Broken Hill have had some extra match practice. Erstwhile Sydney side teammates and goalgetters Peter Robertson (North Shore) and Neil Brunton (Parramatta) will be seen as focal points of attack today. The Sydney Uni and' Hills clash at the Uni oval could be a match of very considerable interest. Sydney Uni won their first round encounter with the Demons but Hills are a mite tougher this time around. Trying hard to meld his youngsters into a strong team, Hills coach, Ray Johns, has seen some improvement each week - this game will be the tester. Players like Mickey Toy, Gary Spillane and Steve Barrett could lead their young compatriots into an improved performance. Coach, Phil Manassa the students skipper, rover Tim Driscoll and Sam Moore gave plenty of cheek against Campbelltown recently and will attempt to ditto the deed against Hills. St George galloping ahead, eyes fixed on their pursuit of the '89 Pennant will play host to the battling Western Suburbs team on their home ground, Olds Park. Peter Siebels having his best season since transferring from Wests to St George will be keen to show a point to his old club. Wests ruck man Rob Trkula who had top games for Sydney in the recent State Championships will lead the Magpies from the centrefield together with Anthony O'Donoghue and Wests captain/coach Chris Woodman. What was to be a milestone year in Sydney Australian Rules Football has turned wet, and there is little sign of change. After a rain troubled first round series, the State League will have to play catch up football - the new recruits to sunny Sydney will have to do some considerable adjustment to their style and all concerned should pray for fair weather. DAVO'S DEVELOPMENT DIARY

Football Is All About Being Positive It's so easy to knock things - it's human nature - or so we are told. One would venture to say that on one has gone through a single day without hearing something negative uttered by someone or other.

In football, and especially in today's "modern" game, the total emphasis is placed on thinking and acting in a positive fashion.

Detailed below are ten "positives" for players:

(1) Be Positive - Remember you are one of 18 - play for the team. (2) Be Positive - Accept the Umpire's decision - arguing only wastes time and disrupts your concentration (3) Be Positive - And you will minimise your mistake rate. (4) Be Positive - Make!the football your object. You should win if you have possession of the ball on more occasions than the opposition. (5) . Be Positive - Listen to the instructions of the runner and follow his messages to the letter. (6) Be Positive - When possible be direct in your passage to goal. (7) Be Positive- Remain calm, and composed as this will help with your concentration. (8) Be Positive - Always attempt to use your possessions wisely, creating opportunities for teammates. (9) Be Positive - Be courageous and confident (10)Be Positive- Listen to your coach and make certain you carry out your allotted task implicitly.

These points are all important and should not be taken in any order. Once you have perfected all of them, then you will become a very good player indeed. You may well ask "What is the SUPER RAFFLE?" Well some time last year the administration at the NSWAFL came up with an idea which would help raise funds for football clubs right across the state.

It was resolved then that the NSWAFL would raise all the raffle prizes plus print the tickets and distribute to the clubs who made application for them free of charge. As you can see below, the League have obtained some quite healthy prizes for this venture and clubs are required to return one third of the proceeds with the ticket stubs so the state body can see some gain for their efforts as well.

The raffle will be drawn on THURSDAY, August 1Oat the League Offices and results · printed in the public notices section Sydney Morning Herald on August 11.

If your club has not yet obtained their issue of tickets, get on to your club secretary to contact the League Office or if they have make sure you sell your quota and return the stubs to the club raffle organiser as soon as possible. With this wet weather and the washout of games, it is becoming increasingly difficult for clubs to raise funds, so this is a great way to give your support to the game and your club. We wish you all the very best, they're not hard to sell!

The NSWAFL wishes to acknowledge the support of the following companys or people and list the prizes in the programme:
