Denby and Cumberworth Denby and Cumberworth ward comprises a number of villages the largest of which is Denby Dale which is of course famous for the world record pies baked to celebrate historical occasions. The 1964 pie- dish now provides a flower-bed outside the village Pie Hall; whilst the 1988 dish now houses a butterfly garden in the grounds of Gilthwaites First School. Denby Dale is also famous for the magnificent stone railway viaduct, spanning the valley of the river Dearne, was built in 1850 to replace an earlier wooden viaduct. The last working reminder of the village’s considerable textile heritage is Z. Hinchliffe’s Hartcliff Mill, still producing quality products after more than 150 years. Denby Dale railway station, on the wonderfully scenic Penistone Line, is served by trains from Huddersfield, Penistone, Barnsley and Sheffield. There are regular buses from Wakefield, Holmfirth and Barnsley making Denby Dale easily accessible for visitors wishing to explore the area. Denby Dale is a popular flourishing village with full facilities including a Post Office, library, bank, and small supermarket. Places to eat and drink The White Hart pub is in the centre of Denby Dale, with The Dunkirk Inn & Restaurant on the outskirts towards Lower Denby. The village has 3 Asian restaurants (Palace Tandoori; Maxis; & The Aagrah); cafes in Springfield Mill; fish and chip shop; plus a wide range of takeaways; sandwich shops; food and health-food shops ;a specialist butcher’s(excellent pies!) and baker’s; and a wine shop in Springfield Mill. Denby Dale Pie Co. manufactures quality pies in the village. Things to do and see Throughout the ward there are many opportunities for those who enjoy walking as the area is crossed by a large number of public footpaths linking all the villages. Denby Dale offers an excellent network of footpaths leading into beautiful countryside. 5 way-marked trails start or end in the village: 3 circular trails of varying length (The Denby Dale Village Trail; The Denby Dale Round Walk; The Denby and Cumberworth Circular) and 2 linear trails based on the railway line (The Denby Dale to Shepley Trail and The Pen-Den Trail). Leaflets describing these walks can be down-loaded at www.denbydale- walkersarewelcome.org.uk . In Upper Cumberworth the walk through the woods along the river Dearne (Ordnance Survey Grid Reference SE 210084) is well worth a visit in its own right, or as part of a longer trip along the Dearne Way. Springfield Mill, a former textile mill, now houses many retail units and cafes. The Denby Dale Centre, a local community organisation is located in the Mill and has a drop-in-café and charity shop. Denby Dale has a cricket club with a fine ground and pavilion; an adjacent bowling- green; a thriving running club; and a tennis club with 2 courts.
