    WE NEED AN ECOLOGICAL REVOLUTION John Scales Avery March 24, 2019 INTRODUCTION1 The present crisis of civilization is unique Does history repeat itself? Is it cyclic, or is it unidirectional? Certainly many aspects of history are repetitive - the rise and fall of empires, cycles of war and peace, cycles of construction and destruction. But on the other hand, if we look at the long-term history of human progress, we can see that it is clearly unidirectional. An explosion of knowledge has created the modern world. This is something that never happened before. Never before has the world had a population of more than 7 billion people, to which a billion are added every decade. Never before have we had the power to destroy human civilization and the biosphere with thermonuclear weapons or catastrophic anthropogenic climate change. Our situation today is unique. We cannot rely on old habits, old traditions or old institutions. To save the long-term future for our children and grandchildren, and for all the other creatures with which we share the gift of life, we must overcome the inertia of our institutions and our culture. The Nobel-Laureate biochemist Albert Szent-Gy¨orgyi once wrote: “The story of man consists of two parts, divided by the appearance of modern science at the turn of the century. In the first period, man lived in the world in which his species was born and to which his senses were adapted. In the second, man stepped into a new, cosmic world to which he was a complete stranger.... The forces at man’s disposal were no longer terrestrial forces, of human dimension, but were cosmic forces, the forces which shaped the universe.

NASH Distinguished Research Professor University of California, Los Angeles n 2018 the American Philosophical Society celebrated its 275th anniversary, though in truth, 1743 is a shadowy date. Some think Ithe APS began in 1727, when Benjamin Franklin, at age 21—having resided in Philadelphia for less than two years since he first arrived in late 1723—convened his famous Junto of leather apron men (Figure 1). Drawing up rules for this private self-improvement group, 12 in number and limited to that size, he tasked “every Member in his Turn” to produce “one or more Queries . to be discuss’d by the Company.’’2 Among the founding group, four were from Samuel Keimer’s print shop (Franklin, Hugh Meredith, Stephen Potts, and George Webb) while the others were shoemakers (John Jones and William Parsons); a surveyor (Nicholas Scull); a scrivener (Joseph Breitnall); a carpenter (William Coleman); an ironmaker (Robert Grace); a glass maker (Thomas Godfrey); and a cabinet maker (William Mangrudge). It was a noble start, indeed an astounding venture, ushered into the world by such a youth striving to implant himself in a young river port, where Quaker merchants and landowners of growing wealth held sway.3 The APS website today claims our Society as an “offshoot” of 1 Read 26 April 2018. In addition to these distinguished individuals, there are also symbols that are associated with this time period and have remained a stronghold in America. Some of the key symbols are the American flag, the bald eagle, the Washington Monument, and the Statue of Liberty. Through the study of this time period, multiple Social Studies standards are met. Two Virginia Standards of Learning are addressed through the study of these people and symbols. They are History and Social Science SOL 1.2 and History and Social Science SOL 1.11. By discussing the American Revolution and the lasting effects it had on the country, these standards will be almost entirely covered.

    Aprons Made from Canvas: The Legacies of Marie-Jacob Godefroid, Restauratrice to the French Royal Art Collections, 1741-1775 Eighteenth-century Paris was a site for significant changes in the art world, whether stylistically in the movement from Rococo towards Neoclassicism or socially in the growing presence of female artists. One field that emerged in this milieu was art restoration, here referring to the treatment of easel paintings in order to prevent signs of aging, such as surface discoloration, warping, etc. This paper focuses on Marie-Jacob Godefroid, a female art restorer active in the mid-eighteenth century whose career was unique in several regards, whether in life as a widowed mother or in work as an art restorer-dealer who received royal recognition. Launched from this biographic approach, my paper seeks to identify broader conceptions of womanhood that allowed female artists paths to success in a field hard-set by patriarchal traditions. It was a diverse cast of characters; among those present were a painter of battle scenes, a Belgian sculptor, and a Prussian engraver. Two other attendants, Jérôme-François Chantereau, a young painter to the King of Denmark, and Joseph- Ferdinand Godefroid, a paintings restorer to the French Crown, had argued over dinner about the attribution of a work by the seventeenth-century Italian painter Carlo Maratti.1 Godefroid also sold paintings from his restoration workshop on the neighboring Rue Saint-Germain-l’Auxerrois, and had recently attempted to sell Maratti’s The Flight into Egypt (Figure 2) to James Waldegrave, the British Ambassador to Paris.

This thesis examines the portraiture of Elisabeth Vigee-Lebrun and Adelaide Labille-Guiard within the context of their time. Analysis of specific portraits in American collections is provided, along with examination of their careers: early education, Academie Royale membership, Salon exhibitions, and the French Revolution. Discussion includes the artists' opposing stylistic heritages, as well as the influences of their patronage, the French art academy and art criticism. This study finds that Salon critics compared their paintings, but not with the intention of creating a bitter personal and professional rivalry between them as presumed by some twentieth-century art historians. This thesis concludes those critics simply addressed their opposing artistic styles and that no such rivalry existed.
