St.Paul's McKinnon JFC Newsletter

From the President April 26 2018 It was another exciting week as we hit Round 2 of the 2018 Season. There has been a lot that has happened over the week.

Auskick This week kicked off with our Auskickers on Saturday morning with George and Michelle leading the charge with just over 130 children and some amazing parent helpers. What a fantastic site to see all of our next generation of boys and girls kicking the footy and playing various fun activities across Oval 2. A big congrats to Michelle, George and all the Auskick helpers to make this a fantastic experience for all these boys and girls.

Seniors Saturday continued with its home ground festivities on Oval 1, with some amazing games at our home ground with the Senior St. Paul’s teams. Following on from last week’s win over Bentleigh, the Seniors players were going head to head with last year’s premiers Dingley across the Thirds, Reserves and our Seniors players. The seniors had a nail biting 3 point win against the reigning premiers in the dying minutes of the game. The Reserves had a competitive game and comfortable win, whilst the thirds also had a nail biting game with a loss by 1 point. It was great to see so many of the junior teams and families at the game supporting our seniors. This week, the seniors and reserves are playing East Malvern at Dunlop Reserve kicking off at midday, whilst the thirds are playing at Dunlop Reserve playing Doveton. Feel free to go there to support our senior boys on their 2018 premiership journey.

Juniors With 8 games played at home and another 3 spread out over the weekend at different locations, our girls and boys had a competitive and fun time playing the best sport in Australia.

We had our U16 boys play on Friday night in our combined team with Murrumbeena against the CHOGS team at Le Page. They fought well but the speed and prowess of the CHOGS team were too good for our boys, however our boys enjoyed playing under lights. Our Sunday session kicked off with our U16 Girls on Oval 1 at home and our U9 Green boys on Oval 2. Both teams set the Sunday off with a lot of fun and excitement. The morning games followed with further games with our U9 Orange, U10, U11 Bronze, U12, U14 Div 4 & finishing with our U14 Girls team with an exciting game kicking 3 goals. Thank you to all the great volunteers who helped out with the canteen and BBQ throughout the day. Whilst the fun and excitement was happening at McKinnon Reserve, our Under 14 Div 1 were being challenged at at 8.15am, whilst our U15 combined team played Port / South at Murphy Reserve with a competitive game.

See the match reports attached to hear the highlights of each game. Lighting Progress On another note, we also had an exciting week with the State Government announcing a $150,000 sporting and government grant for our lighting developments for the club. This was supported by the Glen Eira council as they highlighted our need to have Friday night and Thursday Night capability to hold games at McKinnon Reserve. This supports the committee and the SPMJFC community in being a true social hub for the area. The Glen Eira council confirmed that the lighting will be completed within 8 weeks and will provide SPMJFC the ability to hold games throughout July and August.

Training Tops We are also excited to be able to distribute our sponsored training tops that arrived during the week. We have already seen a large number of tops around the streets with our boys and girls wearing the SPMJFC colours with pride. It is great to see all the boys and girls enjoying their new tops. Watch this space for more information about a competition coming out soon that involves wearing your training top.

St Kilda Football Club Visit We are pleased to advise that the AFL players from will be visiting our club. We have been confirmed that the St. Kilda players will be at McKinnon Reserve to assist in taking some drills and for photos and autographs on Thursday, 3rd May at 5.00 – 6.00pm. A schedule will be sent out by Peter Smith to the coaches and Team Managers as to each of the allocated training sessions and times with each of the players.

Upcoming Milestones We will be having a few boys have their 100th game in our U15 team this week. Our boys are playing at McKinnon Reserve this Sunday against Murrumbeena at 1.30pm. Please feel free to get to our home ground to see the boys play their 100th game.

Demon of the Month Get ready for the Demon of the Month on May 6th. This is a fantastic night where we dedicate an award to a player of each team for a contribution that is something special toward the team and the coaches. These will be presented by our coaches and the last winner of the award. We will have three of our teams supporting the night with meals. It is a fantastic night for the whole club to get together. Please be sure to make this night as it is all about the kids.

Round 3 – Play FAIR round – Sunday 29th April The award-winning campaign was first launched in April 2017, in conjunction with league Community Partner, the St Kilda Football Club, and it has been gradually rolled out to be a staple in all 65 venues in the region. You will have seen the posters placed across the various locations at every venue. It builds primarily on SPMJFC and the league’s strategic values, Respect, Inclusiveness, Health, Well-being & Fun. What it means to PLAY, COACH and SUPPORT FAIR:

FUN – Show sportsmanship to help everyone enjoy the game

APPRECIATION – Recognise the worth of others from all religious and cultural backgrounds (even if they are different to yours)

INCLUSION – Practice inclusiveness regardless of gender, sexuality, disability, cultural background, socio-economic status or football ability

RESPECT – Treat others how you’d like to be treated

The SPMJFC is calling on all our players, parents and supporters to embody these values. Our game and our club has the power to bring people together and there is no better way to do that than to play FAIR. Supporter Values After going to a few games across last weekend, we would like to re-enforce our core values. Whilst our valued supporters are very passionate about the game, we must continually remember that “this is a game”. Please remember that the players are children and that they can be easily influenced by comments or actions made by parents and other supporters. If you do see any inappropriate behaviour or actions, please feel free to contact our incident committee which will treat all contact as discreet and confidential.

If you have any issues, please contact Sally Bonham at [email protected].

I look forward to seeing you either at training or during the week or at the games.

If you need anything please feel free to contact me.

Go Demons!

AMBULANCE ENTRANCES AT MCKINNON RESERVE! In the rare event that an ambulance needs to be called to SPMJFC, please ensure that you DO NOT park in front of any of the ambulance entrances at McKinnon Reserve (Oval 1 and 2). It is critical that the area in front of these gates remain clear on game days and all training sessions to allow quick emergency ambulance access to the ground.

Glen Eira Council can and do fine cars that park there and we will be supporting those fines. Thank you! According to the AFL,155 young men in total (who were footy players when they went to battle) died in the Boer War, World War I and World War II.

The first two players to die during service were Charlie Moore and , both of whom were killed during the Boer War in South Africa in 1901.

The 1916 clash between the Third Division and just three years earlier in the 1898 VFL . the Combined Training Units at Queen’s Club, West Kensington, was the first organised game of Australian Football played overseas by predominantly elite-level players. Australians brought Aussie Rules to the battlefields as a means of escape and recreation. The most famous game was held at the Queen’s Club in London in October 1916. This display of the Australian style of football to the English attracted a crowd of thousands of spectators. The English admired the fitness, skill and agility of the players, demonstrated by the high marking. The Prince of Wales was in attendance to watch the Third Australian Divisional team (who played with a large map of Australia on their blue guernsey) battle it out against the Australian Training Units team (who played in a red guernsey emblazoned with a white kangaroo).

What a beautiful morning for Auskick. It was wonderful to see so many smiling faces and our Auskickers getting into the activities and having fun. I hope you all enjoyed the session as much and the coaches and I did.

A big thank you to all of our parent helpers today. You did an amazing job and we’re grateful for your support and we know your kids love having you involved. As it was our 1st session in the new format, it was a little hectic with lots go- ing on but from all reports there was certainly more ball time for our players and lots of fun and that is what is all about.

Sincere apologies to Nicky and Jen who did the BBQ today as I didn’t thank you at the end of the session today. You did an awesome job and we are very thankful to have such generous volunteers at our Auskick centre. Thanks for all the work you did!

A huge thank you also to our coaches today. It was all very new and lots of equipment to get organised but you were there early and did a wonderful job setting up and running your groups. It is such a delight to work with dedicated volunteers.

I had a few questions in relation to footy boot sales today. We do work with a not for profit company that sell them and I will get some information about them and get it out to you as soon as possible.

Next week’s session is now available for you all to see. If you click on the link below and then on the weekly activities at the top of the page and scroll down, you can change the level (1-3) and look at what all the planned activities are. Prep and Kinder are Level 1, Grade 1 is Level 2 and Grades 2-3 are Level 3. In our girls’ groups we use a combina- tion of the activities to cater for all the age groups. https://play.afl/auskick/activities

Enjoy the rest of your weekend and I hope your footy teams have a win.

Kind Regards,

Michelle Petersen Coordinator Go Tiges! Auskick!

U9 MIXED GREEN St. Paul’s McKinnon vs Ashwood Goal Kickers: T Bitting 2, R Nagar 2, J Bale, 1, D McDade 1, B Fischer 1, Best Players: ‘Total Team Effort’

Perfect morning for football, the team on their home ground were determined today to make a statement! The opening quarter had the Demons make a quick start with our midfield group, led by our co-captain for today Jacob, together with Max, Aidan, James, Evan and Christopher they got first use of the ball and were able to provide our forwards with plenty of opportunities. With Braden keeping the Ashwood backline busy. Second quarter saw some really strong football led in particular by Jake getting in and under, and was well supported by Ewan, Flynn and Peter ensuring Ashwood weren’t able to get any easy kicks into their forward line. Great defensive work from the back six led by Henry, Tim, Jackson and Phillip who made it difficult for Ashwood to play the game on their terms. Third quarter saw the Demons again win the ball out of the middle with Ruben and Braden working hard to provide our forwards with plenty of the ball which allowed Ted to convert 2 great goals and our other co-captain, Declan to kick his first goal in footy! Great tackling by the tough Thomas, ensured the ball wasn’t able to leave our forward half easy. Final quarter and Ashwood were providing our backline with plenty of work to do. Two goal saving marks from Declan and Jake, together with great drive out of the backline from Ted saw the Demons start to get the ball forward which allowed Ruben to kick the final goal of the game. A fantastic even team effort by all players, well done! David

U9 MIXED ORANGE St. Paul’s McKinnon vs Prahran Goal Kickers: C Savva 1, T Winzar 1 Best Players: D Osborne, N Collard, H Weigall, T Winzar, C Savva, H Salwathura, A Hill, D Ianchello, K Harjanta, T Savva Sunny weather, perfect conditions, tough opponent in Prahran...and the 1st home game of the season in front of a large crowd of family and friends. Our Captains today were - Kingsley Harjanta and Ashley Hill. Q1, Prahran were on the front foot with a quick goal. Some superb defensive efforts by Darcy, Tom, and Daniel who ran and confidently took on the opposition by bouncing the ball out of our backline was matched by some solid marks to Hayden, Harish and Harvey while Oliver provided good backline support. Q2 saw Christian equalise with a clever goal, only to see Prahran get a couple of goals to set up a small lead at half time. Christian and Thomas S were in everything - taking marks, tackling, and carrying the ball. Darcy backed up his solid first quarter with a huge second quarter that kept Dad busy writing the game summary notes. Q3 saw some tactical moves that effectively shifted the balance of the game into our favour. Noah completely blanketed Prahran’s tallest and most damaging player. Harvey then ran with Prahran’s quickest and most creative player and was able to outmanoeuvre him and get the ball moving on our terms. The momentum started to shift, with our speed machines – Daniel, Harish, Kingsley, Darcy, Ashley, Tommy W, Thomas S, and Christian S starting to confidently run, bounce, and then carry the ball forward. Darcy was once again in everything, having 4 repeat efforts in one passage of play. Archie H, Lewis and Jona- than worked hard through the centre and the defensive efforts of Charlie, Leroy and Archie M helped keep Prahran scoreless, while we hit the scoreboard 5 times for the quarter. Q4 Ground Hog day – Josh and Alex combined brilliantly again (just like Round1) to repel Prahran and stop a certain goal. Once again a solid team effort in the 4th quarter that meant, overall, we kept Prahran scoreless for the 2nd half while we had 6 scoring shots, and most of the play. In the end - a very tight and close finish. Let’s hope we can keep the momentum against East Malvern (Away) next week. Proud of ALL our boys today! Well Done! PS - Congratulations to Russell on umpiring his first game today. Tom

Congratulations to Russell Fletcher (dad to Lewis U9) who umpired his first game for SMJFL last Sunday!

Well done Russell!

U10 MIXED MAROON St. Paul’s McKinnon vs Murrumbenna Goal Kickers: Kyan Morgan 3, Jonty Litwinow 3, Mitchel Cassidy 1, Zavier Matthews 1, David Zhang 1, (and there was 1 more goal scorer - if you child kicked a goal can you please let me know). Best Players: Great Team effort, special mentions to Jonty, Noah W, Marcus, Kyan, Luke, Jai, Noah G, & Zavier. A great team effort at Home against Murrumbeena. Another confident display from our under 10’s team with every player making a solid contribution. The boys’ skills have developed so much. I am so proud of them. Jai, Riley, Patrick P, Michael, Noah W, Zack, won the football continually out of the centre and delivered to the midfield in the 1st Quarter allowing Mitchell to kick the first goal of the game, and Jonty (Daicos style) kicking the next three. The next quarter Kyan went up forward and kicked three goals, with Patrick R, Zavier, Jonno, Aidan, Luke & Aaron winning the football out of the midfield. The play of the day was when Jonno (just before being tackled) hand-balled to Luke, who ran down the ground and delivered to Kyan who slotted a major. Lucas and Cameron who played for Murrumbeena for the first half were replaced by Noah W and Kyan. Kyan was getting plenty of ball for the opposition kicking into the forward line, continually being marked by Jai. The third quarter saw Henry pick up the ball out of the midfield, and deliver to Zavier, who kicked a goal. The last quarter, Jonty played for the opposition, and drove the ball forward out of the ruck, kicking to Noah W who kicked Murrumbeena’s first goal of the game. Marcus was relentless in defence continually pushing the ball forward. Teddy had a shot at goal, but David stood up and kicked a goal. The team sang the song with passion. We look forward to taking on Ormond next week at EE Gunn Reserve @ 10am. Peter

U11 MIXED BRONZE St. Paul’s McKinnon vs AJAX Goal Kickers: B. Fluxman, P. Marchinovskiy, J. Tilli Best Players: Not available

ROUND ONE: The first game for 2018 Under 11’s Bronze team was played in wet and windy con- ditions signalling the start of a Melbourne winter. The scoreboard shows a result we didn’t expect although I see it as an opportunity for improvement. Encouragingly, second and third quarters, proved the boys have what it takes. Our opposition Prarhan set the bar high for expectations - a standard our boys will achieve with hard work and willingness. Special mentions must be given to Daniel P, Daniel G, Ryan and Luke McGuiness, for giving a superb first round effort. Congratulations to Paul and Ben for being our goal kickers. Thanks to our two under 10 boys Paul and James for stepping up a grade, I know they will be an integral part of our 2018 team. Moving forward we are looking forward to sunny conditions and some home ground support. In the next few weeks the boys will bond and begin to develop as a team. Let’s look to the future for some great moments. David ROUND TWO: What a difference a week can make. The boys put in a performance I knew they were capable of. Ajax are an experience and tough team to beat, but we gave them a run for their money up until half time. During the second half our fitness proved to be our undoing. The outcome being that the boys know they can match it with the top teams now. Great forward line work with goals scored by Paul M, Julian Tilli and Ben Fluxman, and near misses by Joshua Ianchello. Solid defence work came from Ewan, Liam and Ryan in the ruck. This team can only improve and grow in strength with each game. Special mentions to our special awards winners Cayden, Dylan and Cameron for never giving up and showing great leadership. I am truly excited to watch the boys gain confidence and become a force to be reckoned with in 2018. David

U12 MIXED RED St. Paul’s McKinnon 8.3-51 vs Caulfield Bears 3.3-21 Goal Kickers: Guy 2, Yoav 1, AIdan 1, Filip 1, Cody 1, Anri 1, Blake 1 (let me know if I’ve missed anyone) Best Players: Another great team effort by everyone, and it was great to see the boys starting to set-up better structures in both defense and up forward. We had Guy, Alexie and Sam all dominating in the midfield all game, getting us first use of the ball and getting the ball forward. Anson, Cody and Oliver did a great job at cleaning up on our back line, ensuring that we moved the ball quickly out of our defence. Cody in particular had an amazing first game with the team, collecting a huge number of dispos- als and also slotting a goal. Tom, Matthew and our captain Maxim really lead by example throughout the game with their strong tackling pressure. A special mention also to Guy, Yoav and Aidan who both scored their first goals for the season. An exciting win for the boys on our home ground, and what a contrast in weather from last week. The sunny day and dry conditions really suited our fast running team, enabling us to move the ball really well between our back line through to our forward line. We were once again outsized by the other team, but our tackling pressure and ability around the congested ball enabled us to get out of the packs and get the ball quickly into our forward half. We were particularly accurate in front of goal, kicking 8 majors to only 3 behinds. I was really pleased with the effort and hard running of the boys and really enjoyed seeing the joy on their faces as they belted out the team song after the game. Jarrad

U14 GIRLS DIV 3 St. Paul’s McKinnon Demonettes 3.2-20 vs Waverley Park 11.6-72 Goal Kickers: Not available Best Players: Not available Once again the final score did not reflect the immense work ethic of the girls. Ella ‘Diesel’ Barber in a BOG performance and Tess ‘Dusty’ McInneny were in absolutely everything and kept forcing the ball forward all day. Our first goal for the season was a dribbler by Mia Gertler from downtown which had everyone holding their breath until it crossed the line. This was followed up by goals to Jess Paul and Jamison Byrne who had her full bag of tricks on display, including an alley oop bounce attempt which brought the house down. Special mentions go to Erin Collis, Mim Hicks and Rachel Forer who were tireless after playing with the U16’s earlier in the day, Amelia Howard for her ferocious tackling efforts, Sienna Sullivan who was a force in the second half after 5 games of netball in the morning, Rosie Byrne who as an Adelaide supporter introduced the Crow Throw to the league in her first ever game and to Lucy Brown who chased and pressured all day. The club song was sung with gusto as the team were winners everywhere today except on the scoreboard. Bring on Round 3! John

U14 MIXED DIV 1 St. Paul’s McKinnon 2.0.12 vs AJAX 13.14.92 Goal Kickers: O’Brien 1, Behnk 1 Best Players: Not available Another tough match for the Div 1 boys as they continue to adjust to the speed, pace, and physicality of U14 Div 1 football. With an 8.15am start the St. Paul’s boys started slowly with AJAX kicking 5 goals straight while most of our boys were still dreaming of good old Sunday morning sleep ins! But the last 5 minutes of the first quarter showed signs that our boys can play some seriously good football if they run hard, work together and play to the game plan set by the coach, with 2 quick goals before quarter time. The next 2 quarters were a slog, with the AJAX boys not dominating but clearly on top in most areas of the ground. The last quarter was tight with no one scoring a goal for the first 15 minutes before AJAX kicked 3 gaols in “junk time” to make the score line look worse than it should have been. This week’s game is against the highly rated St Kilda City so we will certainly need to find a new gear to compete with one of the top teams in the competition. Pat

U14 MIXED DIV 4 St. Paul’s McKinnon 3.5.23 vs Oakleigh 12.7.79 Goal Kickers: J. Hattingh, H. Kilmartin, P. Blassis Best Players: H. Kilmartin We jumped out of the blocks just as we finished last week. Full of commitment and making the ball our objective, 3 goals to Yanko, Kyle and Paul and giving Oakleigh something to chase. Second quarter was a tug of war and we went into half time even. Footy is a game of centimetres and we dropped our guard. We let them get the centre breaks and they took full advantage kicking 7 goals to none. After some constructive criticism (old fashioned spray) the boys responded and held their own in the last quarter. This is the second game together for the combined under 14 and under 13 and the improvement has been way ahead of where we thought we would be at this stage. This is primarily due to the commitment from the boys and we are pretty excited about the season ahead. Steve

U15 MIXED DIV 3 St. Paul’s McKinnon 26.18-174 vs Port/South Melbourne 3.2-20 Goal Kickers: Joseph Walsh 5, Jordan Kamaretsos 4, Patrick D’Amico 3, Thomas Hughes 2, Jack Forer 1, Liam Gordon-Shore 1, Austin Kelly 1, Campbell Kiely 1, Sabastian Land 1, Seamus McIlroy Matthew O’Brien 1, Adam Paliatsos 1, Nathan Sepe 1, Riley Weir 1, Blake Williams 1, Daniel Zhang 1 Best Players: Jordan Kamaretsos, Vincent Ruffin, Austin Kelly, Tommy Hughes, Jack Forer, Joe Walsh

Our U15’s have had a fantastic start to the season, culminating in a polished performance today in Port Melbourne. 16 boys kicked a goal today with everyone contributing to our big win. Nobody likes a blowout, but it was nice to be on the winning side of this one after a tough couple of seasons in higher grades. A special mention goes to Joe Walsh and Jordan Kamaretsos who kicked 5 and 4 goals respectively. This win is bittersweet after a com- petitive game against Ajax last week. We all had our fingers crossed that this year might be more even than previous seasons. Whatever happens, we are grateful for the efforts of the committee and coaches who have worked with Highett JFC to enter the season with healthy player numbers. Our team lost a few boys to football over the summer and we would have struggled to field a stand-alone team ourselves in 2018. With Highett in a similar position, we have worked together to build a big list of committed players. The union is strong. New friendships are forming and we couldn’t be happier with the performance of all involved on and off the field! Simon

U16 GIRLS DIV 2 St. Paul’s McKinnon Demonettes01.05.11 vs Ashwood 08.12.60 Goal Kickers: G. Smith Best Players: Suzy Kim, Issy Howard, Jordy Bell, Georgia Smith, Sophie Bottero, Mackenzie Byrne Sarah Quist, Erin Collis.

9.00am in the morning, sun shining and our U16 girls were being helped out by Erin Collis, Rachel Forer and Maddy Hicks. A fantastic morning for the girls, however they got off to a slow start whilst Ashwood took to scoring early. The girls challenged hard, however Ashwood got a 5.5 head start to the game by the end of Q1. Our girls played really well in the following quarter with some amazing tackles with Izzy leading the charge with Jordy and Suzy. They drove the ball into the forward line where George converted her first goal which sent the crowds to their feet and Mackenzie kicked a behind which had all the girls pumped. The girls outscored Ashwood in Q2 which was a great achievement for the girls as the came in for the half time break. Q3 and the girls saw the surge from Ashwood again, however Issy, Jordy, Georgia, Sarah and Sophie were not going out without giving it their all. With a strong backline with Ella, Jordyn and Paige all stepping up to keep Ashwood scoreless. Erin & Rachel were relentless with their defence whilst Maddy Hicks ran long over the field. A close call by Sophie nearly had her soccer skills score our second goal after a long sprint to the finish line. The fourth quarter and the girls were playing really well. Having a lot of fun and of course enjoying the sun whilst playing some footy. Maggie showed her skills with Sophie and Jordy all kicking behinds. A big improvement over the week girls. I can’t wait for next week. 1.30pm at Cheltenham. Paul
