Sherkin Island Hotel, Marina & Dún na Long Castle Baltimore Harbour, West Cork DÚN NA LONG CASTLE Dún na Long (Fort of Ships) Castle was built by Fínghin O’ Driscoll in the mid-15th century. It was one of a number of castles in the area belonging to the O’ Driscoll clan, who dominated Roaring Water Bay for centuries. Others include Dún na Óir (Fort of Gold) on Cape Clear and the restored Dún na Sead (Fort of Jewels) above the harbour in Baltimore. In 1537, Dún na Long on Sherkin was burned along with the Abbey when a Waterford naval expedition attacked the island. The O’ Driscoll clan subsequently rebuilt the castle, which was held by Spanish soldiers at the time of the Battle of Kinsale (1601) and later by a British garrison. Known locally as The Garrison, its ruins include a tower and some outer walls. Parsley growing wild on the walls and other herbs nearby are perhaps relics of the castle’s former inhabitants. Finally, the Castle was used as a residence and a fish factory up to the mid-19th century. At the foot of the garrison there was a battery of cannon to guard the entrance to Baltimore Harbour. This explains the flat section beneath the Castle overlooking the water SERVICES: Mains water, Septic tank sewerage disposal, Oil-fired central heating, Bulk gas for kitchen, 3-Phase electricity, Broadband.
