CLUB PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

For a decade the Bulls have been there or there about and Season 16/17 will go down once again as a successful season but without any silverware. We remain a competitive force within the Shires competition and whilst our lower grades have been constant performers making finals every year that elusive premiership eludes us. The rain played havoc with the finals campaign; our 2nd grade held the most promise and AB was confident he would bring it home but a complete wash out against Burwood cut straight to the heart of every Bull and yet again another season of what ifs. 3rd and 4th grade also made the finals and whilst it’s was a very young group of players in those grades the Bulls were gallant in defeat knowing there is a very strong future ahead of us. A mixed year for 1st grade, being competitive in patches and knowing all the players in that squad they know where things need to improve and what they have to work on. It’s a simple game but sometimes the simplest things can seem very hard. Mick McKeough our first grade captain is developing as a strong leader and hopefully next season we can recruit some players to help take our first grade back to the top. We all know that the success of 1st grade transitions into the rest of the club and our focus for this off season is to make that happen.

We were only able to field one team this year in the Tim Creer Cup and it was led but Chris Creer. This is never an easy job but Chris did so with ease and had a core group of players around him helping make the team competitive. Our cricketer of the year came from the 5th Grade side this season and whilst his abilities as a cricketer are far better than the grade he was playing in we need players like Alex Tay to help other younger players in the club be competitive. Alex had a great season opting to play with his brother and I’m sure it was more the sibling rivalry that drove him and now he has one of Patty. Well Done Alex you had a great year and what’s more you enjoyed playing cricket with mates and your best mate of all.

The Under 24s were led once again by Nic Wilson in his final year, and had plenty to prove with a side full of 1st graders and the odd Howsey thrown in to help get them across the line. We finished 2nd in our group and weren’t able to make it count when it was needed. Another finals appearance but still no silverware to spruik about.

Thanks Nic for your service as captain, you have been the glue in the side and although a premiership will not be part of your history the team is being handed on to carry on what you have set in place. The Phil Dunnicliff award is the second most prestigious award in the club and comes from the group of under 24s players, this year Anthony Azize had his breakout season becoming a regular 1st grader and making his maiden 1st grade century against SDs. Anthony is developing as a leader within the club and I firmly see him there leading our team of young Bulls next year. Well done on a great season Anthony!

There were many wonderful individual performances during the season, and those that produced these most often were rewarded by winning the player of the year medals available to each of the grades and the overall medal. The winners were: Dave Gilbert Medal – Hugh Fisher, Gavin Robertson Medal – Anthony Boorer, Ron Payne Medal – Blake Wassell, Tim Creer Medal – Patrick Balzen, Graeme Baird Medal – Alex Tay, Ian Wheatley Medal (under 24s) – Anthony Azize, Gary Bensley Medal – Anthony Azize. All were deserved winners and each player had an outstanding season, congratulations.

As it is most seasons the same band of people front up and help administer the club, Vice President & 2nd Grade Captain – Anthony Boorer, Secretary & Shires legend– Graeme Baird, Treasurer and Life member - Mick Sedgers, Committee member and 1st Grade Captain Mick McKeough, committee member & 4th Grade captain Pat Balzen, Committee member & Under 24s Captain Nic Wilson and committee member Mark Bruce, Committee member and The Chairman as he likes to be known as Mike Wirth, and we welcomed new committee members Tom Wilson and Anthony Azize this year. Thank you for your efforts this season and your dedication to running this club. It is a pleasure to work with you to make the Bulls a strong force in the Sydney Shires competition. As part of the running of the club our captains form a strong part of that and whilst most are on the committee 3rd Captain James Howes, and 5th grade captain Chris Creer were also key members and I thank all the captains for the weekly dedication to being a captain and managing their side each week.

This season saw a group of young 14/15 and 16 year old Bulls come through and begin their journey as senior bulls. Whilst playing 4th grade mainly they more than showed they were ready for the step up to senior levels. We look forward to see you all next year with bigger and brighter things to come. Our juniors had a marvellous season and on the back of a few of the young Bulls making their debut on the senior ranks our juniors had 4 teams playing in grand finals and wining 3 premierships which was a remarkable effort by the juniors and a big congratulations should go to Derek McCarthy for his running of the juniors it’s the strongest it’s been in decades

Annual Report Season 2016-17 3 and a strong junior base means a bright future for the senior Bulls. Well Done Derek and congratulations to the teams that one premiership this season.

7 years in the making and finally we can say our practice nets are done and were utilised many times this season when the turf nets were washed out. I need to say a massive thank you to Anthony Boorer for everything he did in building these nets. AB spent countless weekends constructing them and many frustrating hours dealing with fencers and suppliers to get them done but in all the result was first class and this saw us be nominated by NSW cricket for the Facility of the year in Community partnership. Outstanding AB, and I appreciate as do the rest of the club in your efforts to make these nets a reality. Our preseason will be at home for the first time and with first class facilities.

All clubs are under financial strain to supply everything to their members and keep costs down and we can’t do it without the financial support of our sponsors. This season we welcomed a new sponsor and while it was a small investment by the Eastwood Businessmen’s Club that investment returned massive dividends for them resulting in the Bisso coming back on board next season with a much more substantial financial contribution. Thank you Nic Wilson and Anthony Azize for helping bring that to the club. As they have done for the past 5 years the Bendigo Bank once again sponsored the Bulls and without their support we would have come up short in funding for our new nets. They are great community minded organisation and give so much support to the community its fantastic.

I raised in my speech at the annual dinner whilst I’m proud to lead this great club and push the culture and what we stand for there is a gaping hole which needs to be filled. The time for us being the bridesmaid of the Shires competition and coming 2nd to Briars every year needs to change. I hate standing their handing the Turnbull Richardson Cup to the Burwood boys which we did again this year, they are a strong club no doubt and we can only strive to be as good as them. It’s time for the sleeping giants of Shires to be awakened and I’m encouraging all members new and old to get on board the bus but to not be merely passengers. Its time Bulls to take this club to the next level and I and the executive committee around you are determined more than ever to do this. 2nd place is not an option the time for action start in season 17/18 and the time for success starts in 17/18. So this upcoming season start preseason earlier than the rest, make the fitness sessions we program in and put that extra effort in and it will come back to you two fold. It might be individual performances that we strive for but team or club success is what we desire. I will see you on the paddock and around the sheds and let’s celebrate the Bulls in season 17/18

1ST GRADE TEAM REPORT

The 2016/17 season for first grade started with such promise but ended in what can only be described in one word….frustrating.

With a great win over semi-finalists Lane Cove in Rd 1, we followed that by a perfect performance against Mac Uni compiling 8 dec 347 with Keishav Muralietharan claiming his maiden First Grade ton. We then had Mac Uni 5-73 when play was abandoned due to an injury to an opposition player. This seemingly took a bit of the sting out of our momentum. We followed this up with 3 straight losses to the top 3 teams at the time and needed something to turn our season around.

We then came up against Mounties and were able to produce an amazing game of cricket. In claiming this win, for the second year in a row we were able to completely outplay the eventual premiers. Anthony Azize with his maiden first grade ton, Solomon Tomlinson on debut for the club claiming 5 wickets and Hugh Fishers hard toil with 4 wickets were the standouts in what was truly a wonderful team performance.

Unfortunately for us our following game was washed out followed by the Christmas break where we had 5 weeks off without any cricket. We struggled for consistency for the remainder of the season. An improvement in our mental approach is something that I believe can help combat these inconsistencies.

We have the ability to be consistent contenders in this competition and I look forward to being a part of the beginning of that next season.

Even though our end team performances were lower than we liked there were some wonderful individual performances and learning curves for some of the boys as well.

Ben O’Connell: BOC didn’t perform as well as he did in his debut year for the Bulls in first grade, however the back half of the season was a vast improvement in him when we spoke about leading from the front not only on the field but at training as well. His competitiveness and passion never waivers and I look forward to see what BOC can provide for us next season.

Keishav Muralietharan: Our leading run scorer for the year, Keish’s highlight was obviously his maiden first grade ton. Keish has a lot of talent with the bat and has the ability to take the game away from any team. He has been working extremely hard on his shot selection and temperament and I can’t commend him enough for that. As for now that is his only limitation on becoming one of the premier batsmen in Shires cricket for years to come.

Nic Wilson: Wilso was consistently getting starts this year and unfortunately couldn’t go on with them. His maturity at the crease is ever improving and mainly through necessity has taken it upon himself to be the senior batsmen in our line-up, probably before that should have been asked of him. With him being too old for 24s next season their loss will be first grades gain, if he puts in the effort there is no doubt in my mind his 2017/18 season will be his best ever season for the Bulls.

Tom Wilson: Meesy had a season he would rather forget with the bat being extremely unlucky, and like many of us got more than frustrated throughout the season. His keeping and leadership were as per normal exemplary. After playing in England last year I’m sure the break this offseason will completely refresh him for the upcoming season. HIs competitiveness and the camaraderie he provides is such an important part for our team.

Nathan Ross: Rossy just like Keish is extremely destructive and we saw that on occasions this year. Unfortunately due to work and other things missing games doesn’t help with his consistency. He is our most experienced batsmen and I would love nothing more than to see Nathan dominate next year after taking upon himself to show that discipline he has, despite trying to hide it sometimes.

Mitch Horrocks: Mitch has the most allround game of any batsmen in the club and showed that at various times this year. With an amazing display of hitting against Burwood hitting 76 in extremely quick time, and then conversely the discipline he showed against Pennant Hills after we got sent in on a wet deck was quite remarkable. He has any amazing cricket brain and is helpful to me as skipper very often. If he simplifies his mindset when he bats the results will come.

Annual Report Season 2016-17 11

Anthony Azize: Tones highlight was also his maiden ton in first grade and this was no surprise to anyone at the club. The happiness from the rest of the club on him achieving this was due to the fact that we all knew how hard he had worked to achieve it. He was the benchmark for training this season and I hope we can all follow his example and do similar things next season, I know I will be.

Hugh Fisher: Hugh didn’t have a great season in terms of wickets claimed but this did not reflect how well he bowled most games this season. He was a deserving winner of Dave Gilbert Medal for the best player in First Grade. He has the ability to change the momentum for our team, with his inspiring bowling spells. He never seams to give up and it lifts us all seeing the effort he puts in. He gained the respect from many opposition players this year, now the next step is to improve again so they fear coming up against him.

Chris Steffan: Steffo came back into the team late in the season after being under the tutelage of AB and after his improvement in his line and lengths at the back end of last season, kept that improvement going and finished with a bowling average under 10. Another one of our blokes that has the ability when he gets it spot on to be a premier bowler in the competition, I hope he puts in the effort he always done again next season.

Thank you to Karlos, Sol, Geoffrey, Mav, Wheats, Brucey, Timmy, Shakti and KD all the other boys that played and contributed to the Epping First Grade Team this year with their 5 games or less. It is the highest level that we can get to as cricketers in Shires cricket, and I have been privileged to lead each and every one of you this year and I hope there is more to come.

A special mention to Morgs for an amazing season in twos, he would have played a lot more First Grade had it not been for an unfortunate personal event. I have already seen him become a stronger person for it, and he provides such experience and wisdom for the younger players in our club.

To reiterate what I said in last year’s report it is important that we look to improve constantly, so that we can perform consistently and end up dominating at this level. It is so important that as a club we all help each other to improve and try and play as high a grade as possible to push each other. This will not only provide improvements in our own games, but more importantly will make us competitive in the clubs ultimate goal a Club Championship.

It all starts in the 2017/18 preseason get ready for it.

Up the Bulls!!!

Cheers, Mick McKeough

2ND GRADE TEAM REPORT

What to say about a season that again promised so much but in the end was washed away with some torrential March weather. The stats are that we only lost two games all season and had good momentum running into finals and I only won one toss in the 14 rounds putting us in tough situations nearly every game. Situations that would build character for our finals charge that never eventuated.

The Early Part of the season was very hit and miss. We kicked off the season with a hard fought win against Lane Cove. To me this had alarm bells ringing because as I knew this team were not one of the better teams in the comp and we made it hard for ourselves with some poor batting and some poor fielding. We managed to scrape home with the win but we were lucky. A Sluggish start but we will get better.

Mac Uni was game two and we plundered them day one but catching cost us on day two and they batted all day to get nowhere near our score in a disappointing draw that felt like a loss.

Burwood were game three and after a late start on day one they batted 64 overs on day one with us again giving them chances in the field. Day two they batted on for 15 overs without pushing the score along at a great rate. This left us 64 overs to get their 262 and we gave it a good shake but in the end we just didn’t have enough overs and we lost quick wickets chasing so we shut it down and held on for the draw. There is no way I am handing them two points.

Georges River beat us convincingly and this showed me we were lacking experience in the team. We played dumb cricket and didn’t adjust to the conditions and showed we had work to do.

At this stage of the season everyone decided that it was time to head overseas for their yearly holidays leaving the side short on personnel. We thankfully were able to get a win up against Nth West Sydney. Our catching was improving and we bowled well to roll them for 111 and after bringing some experience into the side we benefitted from it with Brucey guiding us home with the bat.

Next up start as even more people headed on their holidays and after keeping Mounties to 247, a score I thought we could go on and get, we batted poorly bar the two guys who were filling in for the holiday makers. Wheaties and coat batted well but the rest were poor and we got pumped.

At this stage I was looking for answers and looking at a season slipping away. Round 7 and the skipper had a rest while KD won a toss for the team and the bowlers tore Auburn a new one and we pumped them in the one dayer before Christmas.

We resumed after Christmas against Balmain Souths who were top three and this was the start of a roll we went on losing tosses and batting on wet wickets. We worked hard with the bat on a tricky wicket to post a good score and then rolled a hapless batting team really. I couldn’t believe these guys were top three but they had had an easy draw.

Round 9 and we were up against the ladder leaders. We were hitting our straps now and this time we bowled first and rolled an understrength side for 97 and cruised over the line in a one dayer. This is more like it. Round 10 and 11 we beat Strathfield and Penno well while having a bit of fun with my old mate Jacko.

Now we were in second place on the ladder and building momentum. From here the rain started and a delayed start against Lindfield and a lost toss saw us bat on another wet wicket. At 5/26 we were in deep trouble but that man again Brucey and Tones worked hard and got us through and the lower order were able to help get the score up to 159 of our 45 overs. The Heavens opened up and we never got a chance to have a bowl. The reason I mention this game is that we were in a deep hole and we were able to work through a bad start and build on to a score I am sure we would have defended. I knew this would hold us in good stead for the finals.

Unfortunately the last round was a complete wash out and these two no results would prove crucial as Burwood got results prior to the weather and this put us in third place on the ladder heading into finals.

Quarter Final against Balmain Souths and I was quietly confident. It turns out my gut feel was right and when I finally one a toss we destroyed them with the ball on a wicket that gave us some assistance. They were blown off

Annual Report Season 2016-17 15 the park for 32 and we batted on the same deck giving the same assistance. Our practise on wet wickets showed and we got to 120. The second innings was a repeat of the first and at 5/20 odd it was shaping the same but the wicket started to flatten out and they managed 123 by early on day two. By lunch we had the 35 runs we needed and we were off to the semis against Burwood.

Well the week was a wet one and by the time the weekend came it just rained and rained and rained. Not a ball was bowled, not a coin tossed and our season was over as the third placed team up against the second placed team. Such a disappointing end to a season that was building nicely and one I believe could have ended with a premiership. We had the personnel, we had the desire and we had the experience.

Many thanks to Callum Desilva who was superb behind the stumps and finished the season as the leading keeper in second grade, Matt Planninic, Josh Kew who was one of our most consistent batsman, Anthony Azize who showed that hard work does pay off, Scott Bennett, Merrick Szymanski, Mark Bruce whose experience in the middle order was invaluable, Geoff Wilson who always put his hand up even when I asked him to keep for a game, Adrian Craig, Tom Dangerfield, Ian Wheatley, Matthew Boorer, Hayden Doria, James Mallet, Justin Bradley, Blake Wassel, Charlie Davies, Nick Birrell, Sharan Rajendran, Karl Stuart who is so sweet to watch when he is in full flight and Chris Steffan who spent some time in twos building confidence and had a break out year with some fantastic spells but most importantly with some consistency. I would like to make a special mention to a couple.

Kulwant Dhillon who’s help as an unofficial vice-captain is very much appreciated. There are times when he comes to me with an idea and balls later there is a wicket with a catch where he wanted the fieldsman is just incredible and handy to have a different view form the cordon rather than from where I am at mid of or mid-on. He was even our spinner (spinner may not be the right word) for some time this season. Jack of all trades. We were lucky enough to get Brad Morgan in second grade and when he arrived he put his heart and soul into the journey, bringing another dimension to our bowling line up, one that proved very fruitful. Morgs was outstanding with a 10 wicket game against Strathfield, an incredible achievement.

It took a while to build that team feeling but when we did we played some great cricket and had some fun doing it. A little note for the rest of the club. Attitude to training is what is going to take us to the next level. So many guys have sporadic attendance at training and a poor work ethic towards improving their game and it shows. We are at the fork in the road guys. If we as a club are going to take our games and the club to the next level and actually get a club championship we as a club and playing group need to commit to playing a full season and attending to training to be the very best players we can be so we can be the best teams we can be. If everyone commits and invests in the journey I know we will get there and when we do get there it will be so sweet.

A special Thanks to the Bulls committee especially Matt, Sedge and Rowd. Many thanks to the other captains in Howesy, Macca, Pat, Chrispy and the chairman Wirthy. It is hard at times but I think we all worked well together without too much angst.

Cheers AB

3RD GRADE TEAM REPORT

New season, new faces, new captain … the possibilities for third grade this season seemed endless. Throughout the season questions would be asked by this side, how many heart attacks can Bhargav give Howesy in one over? Will Dyl Shaw continue once again to miss straight ones? How big will the blow up from Watts be this week after another plumb LBW decision? What lasted longer, Joel Schiffler’s combined time at the crease or Nick Ford’s bowling career?

In true Epping style our efforts in the field would once again be the strength of the side with no side posting more that 200 against us throughout the season, which rightfully earned us a spot in the finals. Special mention to three magnificent spells of bowling from Nick Birrell, Charlie Davies and Bull’s new favourite love child Sharan Rajendran. On numerous occasions the boys stuck it out together, backing each up in the field and ensuring nothing short of a verbal barrage was provided to the opposition (Zach Quintal can still hear the voices of Schiffler, Howes and Good in the cordon). Another mention has to go to Blake Wassell who consistently performed throughout the season and was justifiably our player of the year.

Our efforts with the bat were not poor however greater resilience in key points of games needs to be shown next season if we are going to be true premiership contenders. Special mention to our opening pair of Dyl Shaw and Bhargav Khamsali who both score consistently at the top of the order and consistently tested the heart rate of the skipper. Other key performances came from Nick Ford and Dylan Munro with scores in the 80s. It’s worth noting however that we were the only side this season who didn’t have a player score a hundred, something to be rectified next year. In my mind the knock of the season was from Goody against Strathfield. Looking down the barrel of being rolled for under 150 on a road at Epping, Goody knuckled down and got himself to 50 with some key partnerships with the tail ensuring we posted a defendable total in excess of 200, an example of the resilience we need to show with the bat next year.

Where to from here? Undoubtedly we were the youngest side within the third grade competition this year. Success next year is not going to come from the development of our skill set but rather with our mental development as cricketers, as we learn from our experiences from last season. Talent is something we don’t lack, but cricket isn’t won by talent.

So toughen up princesses and I’ll see you in August.

Carn the Bullls!

4TH GRADE TEAM REPORT

At the outset of the 2016/2017 season, a preliminary goal of the Fourth Grade ‘core’ was to make finals. Playing finals again and representing this great cricket club was fantastic but it has also left this eclectic assortment of talented cricketers wanting more. Consecutive Quarter Final defeats to Burwood tends to have that effect on people.

The Fourth Grade ‘core’ of Sean Thompson, Hayden Doria and Angus MacQueen have reflected, over far too much Frangos and Stix and Pita (Hercules Platter is highly recommended, Gus and I smashed one in 8 minutes), and we have realised that this season was a missed opportunity. In my report last season, I remarked that the Club was in a strong position with a plethora of young talent bursting through and demonstrating that we are set for the future. Rather than looking proactively at the future and seeing how well positioned we are, I propose to you that it was a missed opportunity due to the vigour, fight and skill that characterised the run home. We entered finals knowing we had not only done enough to get there but had given ourselves the best opportunity to play our best cricket and continue to win.

A theme of young players stepping into the breach will characterise much of these words and aptly started with a player that would finish the season with a u24s cap and appearances in higher grades: Sharan Rajendran. Shaz was purely picked in Fourth Grade because he procured me some new gloves under the staff discount from Kingsgrove. He made good on his selection with a fantastic second innings spell against Lane Cove to begin his Bulls career with a five-wicket haul. It wasn’t the only fine performance as Brendan Ford survived Sean Thompson’s initial attempt to get into his pockets for some snakes and slogged 95 on his Bulls debut*.

Fourth Grade rolled on from ten points against Lane Cove to pick up six and come within a single wicket of another outright victory against Macquarie University. That was as good as highlights got as three consecutive losses all but derailed our season. Against Burwood, good fight with the ball from Charlie Davies and Sean Thompson was wasted as starts punctuated the top six before the aforementioned duo were left with too much to do as we fell short of Burwood’s 209. A poor showing with the bat against a brilliant Georges River bowling performance saw them canter to an easy first innings win. Norwest followed and this was by far the most frustrating of the three; despite great efforts by Peter Kew and Thompson again we just didn’t deliver with the bat. Marek Szymanski’s comeback tour was off and running with 47 and Gus MacQueen blasted 57* to make the score more flattering.

The consecutive scores of 340+ against Lane Cove and Macquarie were long forgotten and it was Epping’s Groundhog Day. We were spluttering with the bat, barely getting a look at 170, and unavailabilities were looking to define our season again. Mass changes were made throughout the grades for the game against Mount Pritchard and it saw fourteen-year old’s Lachlan James, Billy McCarthy and Arvin Niranjan make their Bulls debuts. Lachie and Arvin stepped up with the new ball and Billy supported Surya Malhotra and Stu Henry as the youngsters carried us to a brilliant win chasing 260. Against Auburn in a one-day match we were asked to chase again and again we delivered, Navin Yasotharan (who was somehow sending ‘beer’ snaps for the boys while he was facing up) and Sean Thompson added nearly a hundred to get us within striking distance before Arvin, Surya and Jack Parkinson made sure of the chase.

Players were stepping up and we were winning games. We went from 9th back into the top four and had it not been for inclement weather late in the season (for a change) we would have carried eight straight wins into Finals and a genuinely fostered belief we could win it all. The youngsters, Arvin, Billy, Surya, and particularly Jack provided a youthful exuberance even when things weren’t really happening for them. This will hold them in good stead for years to come.

This exuberance extended to the ‘older’ heads, Joel Schiffler enjoyed a breakout season with a big hundred against Warringah as did Sean Thompson. The above summary does little to demonstrate his value to the Fourth Grade side and club. A truly selfless player, Sean was asked to become a ‘do it all’ player when I succumbed to injury. He didn’t choose to be captain nor did he envisage having to preside over the roughest stretch of our season, but he didn’t let the captaincy affect his own performances which were already improving as evidenced by his first Bulls fifty against MQ and another match winning knock against Auburn. With bat, ball and in the field, the attitude, ambition and performances of Sean, Joel, and others like Gus, Hayden, Stephen Allard, and Justin Bradley made it a pleasure to be captain once again as I knew I always had good support as well as more than capable cricketers.

Annual Report Season 2016-17 23

Rather than beating a dead horse and remarking that we will all be back to do it again next year, there is a chance due to the unfortunate magnitude of writing a thesis on 16th century insanity that I won’t endure the true insanity of 21st century Australia: captaining fourth grade. With this then, I urge all the fine young players as well as the older heads that made this such a great year to be ambitious and work towards playing higher grades next season; go forth and want to play 1st grade or 2nd grade and u24s. This club can’t progress if our players don’t progress like Sean, Joel, Billy and Arvin did last season. Keish and Azize are demonstrative of this in the last two years and there is no reason everybody else can’t make the same strides they have made.

*All ninety five runs were scored through midwicket/cow corner resulting in a better wagon wheel than Adrian Craig’s last season.

Annual Report Season 2016-17 27

5TH GRADE TEAM REPORT

It was the season where the majority of 5th graders will be much better for the run. There were only a handful of games where we fired all cylinders and these efforts we were awarded with good victories. I dare say given the same core of players at the start of the season we play finals. Whether it be boys stepping out for their first senior year or returning from time off , we just couldn't string together the consistency needed after a poor start in the ever growing 22 team competition.

Playing for Tim's trophy needed no motivation and it was an honour to do so. Yes of course there were dreams of holding the 'Holy Grail' aloft come April, but it was through no fault of the boys trying. We had a very good squad and spirit for which i thank all the boys who contributed the past season.

To be fair there are several 5th grade clubs stacked with talent who do not undergo the normal procedure of selection. These clubs have a distinct advantage. The tolerance levels wear a little thin when standard 5th grade bowlers become cannon fodder and any hope of mercy only more frustrated by creative interpretations, so what else is new. Fortunately these clubs are the minority and the competition is mostly played in good spirit.

When we were able to create stability we performed at a higher standard. I make this point as a message to all Bull's players at the club. Team stability creates strength, trust and belief, this is paramount to success. It requires more than talent to win premierships. To put it simply, Saturday's are for cricket. We have the talent......

Alex Tay was our best this season which earned him the honour of 'Cricketer of the Year’. He was the player who could take the game to these higher rated teams. He dismantled good bowling attacks and often battled hard before launching his attack. His form improved with batting and he reached some very high standards. His effort against Burwood was breathtaking. With our season on the line, Al scored a heart breaking 99* to all but win us the game. Alex, like brother Pat helped mentor the young boys on and off the field and was great assistance to the skipper.

Pat's season was disrupted due to work and as such his opportunities were limited. Pat showed us how good a player he can be with some lofty hitting and played a number of fine innings. Pat was often out for the cause of the team and this sums up why Pat is such a valuable player in any team. Having played cricket with the twins when they were just 16 , it gave me great pleasure to see what fine cricketers and men they have become. Hope to see you both back up this season boys.

As is the case in limited over cricket and 5th grade, juggling around players for opportunity , whilst still trying to win is tricky. Basically it comes down to making the most of your chances and several boys did this during the season.

Sanchay Kalra is 'Mr Natural '. He was the outstanding young player in this team with all the attributes of a fine batsman in the making. Beautiful timing and wonderful composure. His innings against S.D Black , was a highlight against very good bowling , if Sanchay can work on fitness next season he will turn 50's into 100's and at a much higher level. Sanchay always good for a laugh and a pleasure to have in the side. Gotta mention that catch as i said Mr Natural.

Talking of good hands 'Buckets' Sedgers rarely miss's anything on offer. Sedge (ii) came to us after a stint in 4th grade and became Alex's new opening partner for the remainder of the season. Brendan showed in his last innings just how good a player he can be. He showed he has the makings of a quality opener and with a little more patience his natural game will ensure plenty of runs. Could double at Ned Kelly and just as intimidating in the field. When Injury free confidence will return to his leg spin.

Another who came from 4th grade was Navin Yasotharin . Navin was always a welcome addition to 5th grade. I believe Nav is likely a high graded player but needs to be available full time to reach potential. Best off batting at 5 or 6 , his good eye allows him to get on with scoring quickly.. Played us into a winning position against our more fancied rivals at Epping oval scoring 70 odd not. Nav is the man to lead the bowling attack once it hit 45 degrees and could be termed the team 'Owl' as he was often up late to discuss cricket with club members.

Rahuel evidently apart of the 'Parliament' (This is gold, Joel help! ) was our go to man in the spin department. When Rah is 'on' he bowls beautifully as he showed when he ripped through a handy Souths outfit, taking a season best of 7 for 18 off 8 overs. Rah effort this season showed he was enjoying his cricket again and it showed

28 Epping District Cricket Club Inc. www.eppingbulls.com.au in performance. . Rates his bat highly, which was the subject of confusion following the discovery of a cherry late season.

Another to start finding a few cherries on the bat was the evergreen Mark Hennings. After a few seasons off, Mark returned to cricket keen to play alongside son Matt at the Bulls. After a nervous start and a few nagging injuries Mark began to hit his straps after Christmas. As his confidence grew, the runs began to flow and Mark took great value in his wicket. When the runs came so did the wickets and Mark is a true all-rounder and will be a most valuable asset next season. Has been named a 'person of interest' at recent inquiry to infamous 'Watermelon gatorgate' incident? (Please contain yourselves)

Also named was son Matt. Matt being just 16 played his debut season in seniors and at times batted like he was seeing watermelons rather than drinking them. Matt played most of his cricket after rep duty was done and his innings at Epping showed will be up the grades in the near future. Matt showed much promise with his leggies and returned some nice figures against Roseville in the searing heat. Matt is willing to work hard and listens to advice which will take him a long way. Excellent in the field.

Another young boy who showed a big improvement this season was Antony Doria. It was hard on Ant to miss games but he stuck it out and he began to bat with some style towards the end of the year. His bowling was steady and will improve with maturity. Liked the way he finished the season in the field especially.

The youngest of them all was Ben Creer. Ben was at every game and showed he was not intimidated by getting behind the ball. Ben featured in a few partnerships with limited opportunity. Ben will be better in coming years and was full of encouragement on the field. Well done mate.

Another who was always there for his team was Issac . Izzy is a fantastic team player would do anything asked of him with 100% effort. Issac can bowl the unplayable and i suspect he lost rhythm at times due to trying so hard to get a break through. Took some fine catches and ground fielding was also very good.

Chintak and Oliver Darroch were also among the regulars. Oliver bowled some handy spells of inswing and will be better for the season. Chintak always safe behind the stumps and consistent with the bat.

To the other lads who played this season, thank you for all your efforts. Coat , Sedge , Rowdy , Wirthy , Mick and the committee your help and support is greatly appreciated thanks boys .

Let’s break the drought in style 2017-18! Chris Creer. 5th grade Capt

FRANK GRAY SHIELD U/24’S TEAM REPORT

The 16/17 Frank Gray Shield season would be my last, along with Tom Wilson and James Howes. All three of us, who played junior cricket together for Epping, were looking to have that storybook or fairy tale ending to our age restricted cricketing career's (master's is a long way away).

Getting back to the promised land started by just winning the important moments in cricket, rather than making a premiership the only goal to strive for. No complacency, make it happen. The team had seen a few departures (all of which I hope to see back at some stage) and it would require some special performers to fill the void.

Round 1 against Lane Cove at Tantallon, a ground which literally flattened me last time, and umpire Dan Burton was a chance too after revealing he had 2 hours sleep off the back of 14 double jd's. A new look team, plenty of youth injected, Debut's to Geoff Wilson, Nick Ford and Karl Stuart. A scratchy performance to start the season, but we showed flashes of our brilliant best throughout. Top order got off to a positive start, however the middle let the opportunity to score 300 slip, eventually bowled out for 210. Biggest talking point was that of Hugh Fisher possibly being able to bat??? Everyone was fired up heading out to the field, and dominated from the outset, Steffo and Fish tearing through leaving them 5/25, the performance topped off with an absolute specie from Geoff 'gypsy' Wilson taken at cover.

Round 2 against Lindfield at home. We dominated this fixture last year, however, we knew they were better than that day and would be out to prove a point. An all round great game, which unfortunately didn't go our way, losing by 13 runs. Notable performance to Keish, his first of four half century’s for the season.

Round 3 we took on Roseville, and a red cap was handed out to the worst conditioned 16 year old going around, Sharan 'Shaz" Rajendran, not that it affects his bowling, the kid is a wizard. The bowling wasn't quite there, even though we dismissed the very young side for 135, extra's were costing us. However, we were treated to a brilliant display of power hitting by Keishav and Ben 'Bocca' O'Connell, who bludgeoned our way to a 10 wicket win.

Round 4 a trip to the formidable peninsular. Warringah may not have been the same dominant dynasty from years gone by, but, history between our two clubs showed that games were always very close. This turned up to be a bizarre game of cricket; it had a bit of everything, and some! It started with the pitch, which looked like a dried up river bed. Then, resident cardiologist Cal DeSilva, tore a hamstring after looking very comfortable at the crease. Next, after stumbling to 7/117, we witnessed a match winning innings and partnership. James 'Thor" Mallet played flawlessly for 62* and the unlikely partner being Chris 'Steffo' Steffan finishing things off with a entertaining 41*. An early wicket put us in the game, only to then be treated to the English import dish out some punishment, having them flying around 8 an over. Enter Karl Stuart, who managed to tie him up for an over a force a loose shot. That moment changed the whole game, the fielding lifted with a run out to Steffo shortly after, and Karl was on song, bringing them to their knee's at 7/120. Shaz finished it off, keeping it ever so tight for an offie, super impressive performance in the end.

Round 5 was the bye, which preceded the local derby in round 6 against Pennant Hills. Another strange game, less said the better. We toiled, probably a bit too hard, against a team we knew we were better than, which can produce these types of performances. Too many extra's, frustration at the hundreds of 'play's and misses', backed up by an unconvincing run chase, with the exception of Tom 'Meezy' Wilson, who had clearly had enough of the mediocrity, and smoked anything that moved on the way to 68* and a bonus point win.

Round 7 we were sent to what literally may have been hell for a day. Not that Macquarie University's Northern Oval is anything to crow about, but with temperatures in excess of 40 degree's, it may as well have been. I was hailed as a genius as a result for winning the toss and electing to barbeque the students while it was hot. Red hot start, with running between wickets coming at a premium, Keish & Bocca once again treated us to another hitting masterclass, scoring 66 & 61 respectively, and an opening stand of 144. The rest of the innings was much of the same, everyone chipping in with scores, doing their best to save their legs. 8/298 after 50. The bowling innings was going to be James Howes' last for the side, and he took the opportunity with both hands. Howesy's ever consistent control, ability to build pressure, and the unsuspecting underground bumper had the students falling over themselves, finishing with 5/34. All out for 100 and onto the semi finals.

Annual Report Season 2016-17 33

We were awarded a home final after the SSC deemed greenway oval unsuitable to host a final, and probably a sausage sizzle, so we hoped to use that as an advantage. You can't play any less than your best in finals, and unfortunately, it was another patchy performance. We lost to a better side on the day, and that's cricket sometimes. Their captain played a blinder, the other played around him. We couldn't break enough partnerships, or establish any ourselves. Eventually we were strangled out of the game, finding it hard to manipulate their spinners and field setting's. A disappointing result to a promising season.

In reflection, I'd like to thank the club for giving me the opportunity to serve in this role and represent such a fantastic club, full of fantastic people. I loved my time playing in this special competition with some blokes, and made many more friends through it. To finish, I will just offer some advice for the young men that have it all still ahead of them. There's no better time than now, don't leave it to the last second, the opportunity you have now to play in this comp, in this age, with these guys, beyond the results, the memories and lesson's you learn are priceless. Don't quit on yourself or each other, you can push yourself to places you don't even knew you could get to. You've only got to prove it to yourselves, no one else. It's your time. Bulls Forever,

Nic Wilson, Captain.

Did you know…? In Season 1997-98, Ian Wheatley became Epping’s first player to pass 1000 runs in Frank Gray matches.

In our 75th Anniversary Season of 2007-08, Al Tay became our first player to achieve 50 Frank Gray wickets.

Andrew Smythe represented Epping for 10 consecutive seasons in the Under 24’s. Great effort.
