SWC CONFUCIUS HUB STUDY MANDARIN

SWC is the only further education college in that is a Confucius hub; offering Mandarin Chinese, which both on and off site. It is delivered by a team of Mandarin Chinese tutors who are assigned to work in our Confucius hub.

The Hub, now in its sixth year, has seen considerable growth and this year we have a team of 12 tutors delivering lessons to college students, 54 schools, together with evening classes at various levels available at each campus and enrolments exceeding 4000.

SWC recently launched the college’s new Business Chinese Test (BCT), an online Mandarin Chinese course which has been designed to develop basic communication skills for collaboration with Chinese businesses.

The new South West College Erne Campus in Enniskillen will be a flagship for sustainable construction globally, as the first educational building in the world to achieve PassivHaus Premium and BREEAM Excellent accreditations. The project, funded by an investment of approximately £29million by the Department for the Economy, will present exciting learning and research opportunities for students at SWC and architectural/construction industries across the UK and Ireland, and is already attracting significant interest locally, nationally and internationally. ​ The Erne campus, situated on the site of the former Erne Hospital, will provide a unique learning environment, with significant health and well-be- ing benefits for staff and students through its PassivHaus design. It will also act as a living laboratory for the study of areas such as, energy efficiency and conservation, environmental impact, water usage, and sustainable construction techniques. Once perceived as an option for students with lower grades, apprenticeships are growing in popularity among students with higher grades and ambitions to climb the ladder and among employers seeking work-ready employees.

Aaron Megaw started his journey with SWC in 2015 when he joined the Gold Apprenticeship with Greiner Packaging in Dungannon and this summer, Aaron will have completed the first year (of the 2 year) Open University Top-up Degree in Engineering at the college!

I’m getting lots of on-the-job training and experience and I’m Aaron says: “After my GCSEs I was encouraged to stay on at dealing with people on different levels across a big school to do A-Levels but I knew that wasn’t for me. I wanted to organisation. I know these experiences will stand to me in the learn skills outside of the classroom and the more I found out future. SWC Student makes her mark!

Our first year Children’s Care Learning and Development student Aliyah Black is making her mark outside of the classroom! As the Youth Campaigner for National Deaf Children’s Society Northern Ireland Aliyah from Dungannon was at Stormont earlier this year, pursuing her bid to have GCSE British Sign Language on the NI education curriculum.

Aliyah said “It’s our mission to make BSL accessible to all young people, which will ultimately have so many benefits including better communication to improve social, educational and employment prospects of deaf people.”

Aliyah was joined by Minister for Education Peter Weir to launch the Deaf Works Everywhere Campaign at Stormont today, alongside Chief Executive of National Deaf Children’s Society Northern Ireland, Susan Daniels, and Head of Policy and Influencing Alasdair O’Hara.

I have not received my GCSE/ A-Level results yet. Can I still submit an application form?

Yes, please submit your application form as early as possible. When you receive your results, we will ask you to forward a copy to South West College.

If my course requires an interview, will this still happen given the current situation? Due to the current rules on Social Distancing, we have not been able to proceed with face- to-face interviews. However, we are looking at ways in which we can work around this. Our admissions team will contact you with further instructions during the summer months. If you have any questions, our teams are available, and you can get in contact by leaving an enquiry on our website or via Social Media.
