CHIEF EXECUTIVE’S FOREWORD

IT IS MY PLEASURE, ON BEHALF OF THE GOVERNORS AND STAFF OF SOUTH WEST COLLEGE (SWC), TO INTRODUCE THE 2021-2022 HIGHER EDUCATION PROSPECTUS.

South West College holds well established ‘Higher Education Provider” status awarded by the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) which indicates QAA’s confidence in our academic standards and the quality of the student experience at SWC.

This is a highly sought after award and gives the College and the South West Region confidence in high quality, industry-focused higher education provision, currently on offer; this offer clearly meets the needs of regional and national employers as it is jointly developed by the College, in partnership with employers and local universities, and takes account of local, regional and national skill needs, as reflected in the Skills Barometer, Sub Regional Skills Barometer and the Industrial Strategy (Economy 2030). A key target for the College is to widen access and participation opportunities for students, across the South West Region and beyond.

Michael McAlister Chief Executive South West College

4 www.swc.ac.uk | 028 8225 0109 Welcome to South West College

This strategic focus has ensured that the College continues to provide an affordable and high quality Higher Education offer which has led to a significant growth in full-time provision and similarly, a notable growth in part-time provision.

Excellence in teaching and learning across all our Higher Education programmes remains a top priority for SWC, and students regularly comment on the level of attention they receive from our team of dedicated lecturers. Students are taught in small class sizes that afford high levels of guidance and support and the impact of this is borne out by the successive ‘highest level of confidence’ ratings we receive for our provision, in external quality inspections.

There are in excess of 1900 full-time and part-time places on offer at South West College where students can achieve a Higher Education qualification through full-time and part-time modes and can undertake Foundation Degrees, Higher Level Apprenticeships and Honours Degrees, locally at a SWC. SWC students continue to achieve in national, international and global competitions and their skills and work ethic are exemplary. These admirable student qualities are much sought after and have been recognised and rewarded by industry, who provide SWC students with numerous scholarships, such as the Strickland Scholarship, JP McManus All Ireland Scholarship Scheme, SSE Airtricity Scholarship and the Chief Executive’s Scholarship Scheme, valued in excess of £100,000 per annum, in addition to several hundred internships.

SWC has achieved Investors in Innovation Status and works closely with industry to ensure that all students are employment-ready, whether new entrants to industry, or existing members of the workforce who are upskilling to meet increasingly complex, industry needs. In these aspects, SWC leads the way with a unique blend of qualifications and delivery models. Articulation routes are provided by universities so that students can study in SWC for two or more years and if they choose, progress on to university to top up their qualifications. Through the SWC /The Open University Partnership the College offers a wide range of one year full-time and part-time honours, Top Ups in areas such as Computing, Engineering, Construction Engineering Management, Sport and Exercise, Buiding Services, Transport and Supply Chain Management, Corporate Law and Finance and Visual Media.

Students may also progress to QUB or Ulster University for top-up honours degrees.

The College continues to expand its international reach and is developing partnerships in China, America, France, Germany, Russia and other regions, to broaden the horizons of all our students. I hope there is a Higher Education option in SWC that meets your needs and we look forward to welcoming you.

Yours sincerely Michael McAlister Chief Executive

AN OUTSTANDING COLLEGE IN A RURAL REGION

South West College is a dynamic, innovative and entrepreneurial College, focused on delivering excellent results and outcomes for its students, industry and the local economy. The College catchment covers the counties of Tyrone and Fermanagh, a rural and industrious region.

The College is recognised locally, nationally and internationally and has gained numerous awards for its high quality and industry relevant education and training provision. South West College has strategically responded to this need through the development of innovative apprenticeships and a modern Further Education curriculum.

The College has also developed a wide range of higher education programmes, including 16 Foundation Degrees, BSc Top Ups, and Full Honours Degrees with specialisims and pathways, many in STEM subjects, and has extended its international outreaching support of its students and the development of the economy. It works closely with a wide range of partners, including universities, schools, businesses and local councils.

The College is a key player in the economic development of the region, working closely with the business community in developing the skills necessary for current and future jobs. It received an outstanding performance level in the most recent inspection of its Further Education and work based learning provision and has consistently received the highest level of confidence rating in successive inspections.

It does this with strong governance, an excellent team who are committed to ensuring students receive the best possible learning experience, a track record of financial efficiency and state of the art facilities, including four technology and innovation centres, which help to meet the needs of the present and future economy. 10 Welcome to South West College

LET’S TALK FINANCE

WITH THE COST OF UNIVERSITY TUITION FEES RISING, YOU MAY THINK HIGHER EDUCATION IS OUT OF YOUR REACH FINANCIALLY BUT UNIVERSITY IS NOT YOUR ONLY OPTION.

BE SMART ABOUT IT... GAIN YOUR DEGREE WITH AN AVERAGE SAVING OF AROUND £17,500

22 www.swc.ac.uk | 028 8225 0109 Welcome to South West College

TUITION FEES

Tuition fees at South West College are significantly lower than universities. These fees cover the cost of your tuition, registration and exams.

The Association of Colleges (AoC) revealed that HE students who study in FE colleges are likely to leave college with around £17,500 less debt than if they had studied their qualifications at university.

With lower tuition fees, the chance to live at home, work part-time, and reduce travel costs, studying a Higher Education course is a fantastic way to gain internationally recognised qualifications close to home.

Our Student Support team is happy to provide information, advice and guidance on any aspect of student finance and budgeting.

ADDITIONAL SUPPORT

You may be eligible for additional support if you:

have a disability, mental health condition or specific learning difficulty; have one or more dependent children; have an adult member of the family who depends on you financially; claim income-related benefits or are aged 60 or above; are experiencing financial hardship.

You can find more information at: www.studentfinanceni.co.uk

Students starting university or college can apply for loans to help with their tuition fees and living costs. How much money you get depends on if you study full-time or part-time and on your living circumstances.

Tuition fee loan for full-time and part-time students - this covers the fees you’re charged each year for your course and is paid directly to the college. To qualify, your part-time course needs to be at least 25 per cent of an equivalent full-time course each year, for example four years instead of one year full-time.

We strive to have a strong culture where we work to promote student empowerment to maintain your own health and wellbeing whilst also providing you with the opportunity to achieve your full potential, in turn benefiting yourself, the staff and the College.

ERNE CAMPUS

The new South West College Erne Campus in Enniskillen will be a flagship for sustainable construction globally, as the first educational building in the world to achieve PassivHaus Premium and BREEAM Excellent accreditations. The project, funded by an investment of approximately £29million by the Department for the Economy, will present exciting learning and research opportunities for students at SWC and architectural/ construction industries across the UK and Ireland, and is already attracting significant interest locally, nationally and internationally. The Erne Campus, situated on the site of the former Erne Hospital, will provide a unique learning environment, with significant health and well-being benefits for staff and students through its PassivHaus design. It will also act as a living laboratory for the study of areas such as energy efficiency and conservation, environmental impact, water usage, and sustainable construction techniques. It is envisaged that findings from studies associated with this building will inform design and building applications for domestic and commercial buildings of the future.

TAKE A VIRTUAL TOUR

Earlier this year a video tour of the Ground Floor of the new Erne Campus was created to capture some 360 degree video. If you log on to the South West College blog you can view the tour.

We would encourage all prospective students to “virtually” visit areas such as the Central Hall, Coffee Dock, Technical Services and classrooms such as Numeracy, Catering and Tourism. You can also get a sense of the scale of the atrium, which gives greater views of Enniskillen as you move further up the elevations.

PART-TIME UNDERGRADUATE STUDY

Studying for a Higher Education qualification part-time is a popular choice for many people.

Working while you study. Studying part-time allows you to continue to work and maintain your income whilst you learn. Part-time courses are structured to allow you to balance your studies with your work commitments, and many courses encourage you to make use of your workplace experiences and expertise as an integral part of your studies.

Balancing personal life and study. One of the greatest advantages of part-time study is being able to combine learning with family or personal commitments. Although sometimes challenging, part-time study allows you to balance different parts of your life, and to study at a rate that suits your personal circumstances.

All of our courses are supported through our Virtual Learning Environment, VLE, which allows you to access materials, library resources and study support remotely and in your own time.

Financial benefits. Part-time study allows you to maintain your income while you learn. This will help you to balance your personal commitments and to finance your studies.

Career enhancement. Part-time study can help enhance your existing career, develop new skills if you are looking for promotion or increase job prospects if you are looking for a career change. The SWC offers a growing range of distinct professional body awards, and many of our courses are accredited or endorsed by professional bodies to make sure you develop the knowledge and skills employers are looking for.

HIGHER LEVEL APPRENTICESHIPS

HIGHER LEVEL APPRENTICESHIPS

If you have completed A Levels or an equivalent Level 3 qualification, you may be interested in a Higher Level Apprenticeship (commonly known as a HLA) for the next step in your journey. HLAs are also suitable for someone who is already in industry, who does not have a higher level qualification, but may wish to progress to a new level within industry.

WHAT ARE HLAs?

HLAs are a real alternative to the traditional university route where they allow participants to achieve a recognised higher education qualification whilst gaining invaluable relevant industry experience.

HLAs were introduced to address the severe skills gap in NI and are based on a partnership between South West College, NI based private companies and the Higher Level Apprentice. This partnership combines high quality training, with employment, which will deliver the skills employers and learners need and are relevant to the local economy.

HLAs are paid ‘employees’ of the company, released to SWC for their study. As such

62 www.swc.ac.uk | 028 8225 0109 Welcome to South West College

they are not classed as students and therefore not burdened with any student debt, but rather receive a salary throughout the duration of the programme. In addition, they are not liable for any tuition fees to either the college or the awarding body.

HLAs ARE SUITABLE FOR SOMEONE WHO:

wishes to commit to further study at higher level but would prefer a more practical and work-related approach to learning as opposed to total classroom study

is well organised and able to cope with the competing demands of work and study at the same time

www.swc.ac.uk | 028 8225 0109 63 HOW DOES THE HLA WORK?

HLAs are paid employees of a private based company, released to SWC for the required period of study

study a Level 5 qualification, which is either a Foundation Degree accredited by our local universities or Accounting Technicians Ireland (ATI) professional accountancy qualification

must be supported by the employer i.e. employer must agree to release the HLA on full salary for the period of study at the college, in addition to the time spent at work

64 www.swc.ac.uk | 028 8225 0109 Welcome to South West College

ELIGIBILITY

To be eligible to study as a HLA you must meet the following criteria:

be employed by a NI based private company and employment must be relevant to the area of study remain in full-time employment for the duration of the programme supported by the employer newly appointed to a job, or have a significant change to current job role paid a salary which is commensurate with the job role, which must be at least basic minimum wage or above (not apprenticeship rate) meet the entry requirements of the course that you wish to study.

BENEFITS OF STUDYING AS A HLA
