3 The University

Education is vital to the quality of life of Northeastern Minnesota, and the University of Minnesota, Duluth (UMD) is an important contributor to the higher education scene.

For nearly 30 years, UMD has pursued the brood mission of research, education and service os one of five coordinate campuses of the University of Minnesota system. UMD can also trace its educational lineage to the turn of the century through its predecessors, Duluth Normal School and Duluth State Teachers College.

With a student body of approximately 6,500 and a faculty nearing 400, UMD is large enoogh for diversity and quality, yet small enoogh to provide students with personal attention. On the undergraduate level, offerings ore available for 73 majors leading to nine bachelors degrees, plus pre-professional programs. New masters programs in business odministrotion and industrial safety have recently been added to already established graduate offerings in liberal arts, sciences and fine arts. UMD also has a two-year medical education program with special emphasis given toward directing students into family practice.

In addition to regular day classes, UMD has evening coorses offered on campus ond at area locations through University Continuing Education and Extension. They are attended by more than 1,200 persons each year. Two five-week summer sessions attract an additional 2,500 students.

Physically, the unique campus has nearly all academic buildings interconnected for all- weather-convenience. The 250-acre campus developed since 1950, has special facilities in the Marshall W. Alworth Planetarium, Tweed Museum of Art, Marshall Performing Arts Center and the William R. Bagley Nature Area. On campus housing is available for 1, 700 students in traditional residence halls and apartment buildings.

On-campus activities foster an active out-of-class life with some 80 student groups active on caon pus, plus intercollegiate and intramural sports. More than 250 public events are held on campus each year and range from plays and concerts to athletic contests.

Northeastern Minnesota's natural scenic attractions add a special appeal to study at UMD. Students - and faculty - appreciate the ready access to nearby ski hills, canoe areas, hiking trails, hunting and fishing.

On that date, UMD became the eighth member of the Northern Inter- collegiate Conference (NIC) as its members formally voted for UMD's admission,

The move severed ties with the MIAC, to which UMD had been a member since 1947. UMD had been a member of the NIC before 1947, but the conference was under a different name then, as all of the members were teacher's colleges rather than universities,

The Duluth State Teacher's College (to become UMD) joined the Northern Teacher's College Conference with the 1932-33 season. Original members were Mankato, Moorhead, Bemidji, St. Cloud, and Winona. During that time, the Bulldogs had a rich tradition with six football championship titles and four basketball top titles.
