  • Romantic Emancipation in the "Woman's Heritage Film" Antje Ascheid, University of Georgia, USA
Safe Rebellions: Romantic Emancipation in the "Woman's Heritage Film" Antje Ascheid, University of Georgia, USA In a 2001 editorial in the New York Times Book Review, entitled "The Big Chill," the novelist Roxana Robinson lamented a cold spell in the world of literature at the expense of feeling. Modern and postmodern fiction, at least the kind that receives critical acclaim, such as the works of Cormac McCarthy, Don DeLillo or Joyce Carol Oates, she argued, chooses: alienation and irony, disaffection and distance, over passion and tenderness, engagement, anguish or rapture… The Brontës and Jane Austen, who wrote exclusively about women and the world of emotions, would have a hard time today making it out of the 'women's fiction' category. (Robinson, 2001) Nonetheless, many prominent art-house cinema releases of the last two decades have been adaptations of nineteenth-century novels, among the most recent Terence Davies' film adaptation of Edith Wharton's The House of Mirth (2000), Merchant-Ivory's Henry James adaptation The Golden Bowl (2001) and Mira Nair's version of Thackeray's Vanity Fair (2004). In addition, period dramas based on original screenplays such as Titanic (1997), or television programs like the Victorian doctor series Bramwell, have enjoyed remarkable success. Frequently controversial, these films, loosely labeled heritage cinema, have been classified as a new genre that foregrounds lush period detail and bourgeois narratives. The heritage debate in Britain further critically addressed heritage cinema in various ways – for instance, in respect to its ideological representation of history, its articulation of postmodern nostalgia and its modes of literary adaptation (Vincendeau, 2001).

Foreword from the UK Film Council On behalf of the UK Film Council, I am pleased to present the findings of this scoping study into the lack of women screenwriters in the UK. The UK Film Council, as the Government‐backed strategic agency for film, has a responsibility to ensure that there is a strong evidence‐base to support our activities. Where there are gaps in the research, it is important that we identify these gaps and address them. There are many myths and theories about the position of women screenwriters in the UK. It may come as no surprise to learn that women are under‐represented, but the extent of the imbalance, and the reasons behind it, have never before been examined in any detail. The Institute for Employment Studies has brought together, for the first time, academic research and up‐to‐date industry data to produce an in‐depth, well‐ conducted report.

  • Girlfriends Season at BFI Southbank (20 December 2017)
Wednesday 20 December 2017, London. The BFI today announces a season of films celebrating the joys and complexities of female friendships. GIRLFRIENDS will run at BFI Southbank from Thursday 1 February – Tuesday 20 March and will include features and shorts from around the world, from the silent era to today. The season showcases portraits of women who are actually three-dimensional and not defined solely by their relationship to men; from the hedonist heroines of Vera Chytilová’s Daisies (1966) and the schoolgirl friendship depicted in Jane Campion’s rarely-seen TV movie 2 Friends (1986), to the endlessly quotable titular characters of Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion (David Mirkin, 1997), these are films that would definitely pass the Bechdel test. With recent events putting gender inequality and issues of female representation into stark focus, this season is a timely celebration of sisterhood, with films that modern woman will relate to. Around twenty features will be screened, most of which will be paired with a short film by an up-and-coming woman filmmaker. More than half the films in the season are directed by women, including Sally Potter, Nicole Holofcener, Claudia Weill and Hollywood pioneer Dorothy Arzner, while almost all of them have a female scriptwriter, presenting audiences with a wealth of female talent both behind and in front of the camera. There will also be a tie-in collection on BFI Player with more than 20 features and shorts on offer, including critically acclaimed Palestinian film In Between (Maysaloun Hamoud, 2016), Sean Baker’s compassionate and frenetic tale of two transgender sex workers Tangerine (2015) and Japanese film Happy Hour (Ryusuke Hamaguchi, 2015), which was a hit on the festival circuit in 2015.

  • “Bad Girls”: Transgressive Narratives and Rebellious Daughters in Contemporary British Jewish Women’S Writing
JEWISH “BAD GIRLS”: TRANSGRESSIVE NARRATIVES AND REBELLIOUS DAUGHTERS IN CONTEMPORARY BRITISH JEWISH WOMEN’S WRITING Efraim Sicher* ABSTRACT: This contribution to a special issue on gender looKs at contemporary Jewish women fiction writers in the UK who, following the sexual revolution, depict the rebellion against the restrictive gender roles and behavioural rules of the Jewish home. I will argue that the subversive representation of transgressive behavior demonstrates tensions between, on the one hand, loyalty to the Jewish home and the imperative of communal or tribal continuity and, on the other, the pull of ideologies and agendas which encourage women to be independent in a society that affords them freedom to do what they want. Introduction: Rebellious Bodies Alix is a tough woman, tough because her father Saul Rebick fought back when the fascists re-emerged after the war in England; tough because she is a graduate of second-wave feminism in the seventies; tough because, after centuries of persecution and deportation, it is time for Jews to stand up for themselves, and especially a Jewish woman who has no patience for the patriarchal rules of the Bible or the Jewish family. Her answer to Hitler is “We’re still here,” the title of the 2002 novel by Linda Grant of which Alix is the female protagonist and one of the narrators.1 Alix is looking for a male partner who would be an equal in toughness. But as she nears the fifty-marK, Alix is becoming frustrated at waiting for the ideal solution to power relations in sex. Her body is betraying her; she relies on a woman’s cosmetic tricks to masK the unattractiveness of her age.
