-5- DIOCESE OF BUFFALO OFFICE OF THE BISHOP

TO BE BROUGHT TO THE ATIENTION OF YOUR PEOPLE IN A SIGNIFICANT MANNER THE WEEK BEFORE THE COLLECTION IS TAKEN

March 21, 2016

Dear Fathers:

I am writing to let you know that our Diocese has designated April 23rd and 24th for the Catholic Home Mission Appeal. Many of us would be surprised to hear that nine million Catholics are annually in need of our assistance right here in the United States. Each year the US Conference of Catholic Bishops requests that we conduct a special second collection for the Catholic Home Mission Appeal. With your support yearly, we .can continue to provide essential pastoral outreach in home mission dioceses. Taking an example of the diocese of Brownsville, the Catholic population is more than 700,000-86 percent of the total population-but many are not registered in a parish. Laymen and women have taken on many pastoral responsibilities. The aggressive Catholic growth rate essentially made each priest responsible for ministering to more than 12,000 Catholics. Encouraging vocations to the priesthood is one of the bishop's priorities as he plans for the diocese's future. In 2015, the Catholic Home Missions Appeal was able to provide funding for necessary pastoral programs such as seminarian education, the permanent diaconate formation program and for continuing education of the clergy. I invite you to do all you can to promote this collection. Please use the materials supplied by the Secretariat for Evangelization and Missions. Rev . Justus Ndyamukama, Director for the Pontifical Mission Societies, is coordinating the collection in our Diocese and can provide more information on how to promote this national collection. Please be generous in the Catholic Home Mission Appeal and help strengthen the Church at home. Your support on April 23rd and 24th will truly make a difference. Thank you for your generosity. May God bless you!

Yours fraternally in Christ,

Most Reverend Richard J. Malone Bishop of Buffalo
