    Bishop’s House, PO Box Private Bag, Mtandi, Masasi, Tanzania [email protected] Christmas 2019 Our dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, “Behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. For there is born to you this day in the City of David, a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord.” (St Luke 2.10 + 11 NKJV) It is with joy, we greet you this Christmas 2019! We do thank and praise our Almighty God, giving Him all the Glory for this past year. We have seen much of His Love and Protection, His Mercy and His Grace among our people in Masasi. We are thankful to Him for the peace and unity in our Diocese amongst the priests and the congregations through the many challenges and difficulties we face. They are there for us to see and to receive. Since my Consecration in 2014 we have been working towards our Five Year Development Plan for Pastoral Care and Social Services. We rejoice as these five years near completion that God is doing His miraculous in the hearts of many people, in many ways and in many places in our Diocese. I bring you news of our Diocese and our people from this year past. Pastoral care: now in 2019 we see the many ways that God has blessed us. God has given us strength to serve, to minister to many congregations; to give the Sacraments, to conduct seminars and conferences, to bring trainings and to hold open-air meetings. There have been many baptisms and confirmations through the whole Diocese.

No surprises if I tell you I’m praying for the next Bishop of Chester. I will use some of the prayers prepared for the diocese and found on the website and I hope to go to one of the prayer meetings arranged for us to pray together. I hope I will be praying on my own in my own words, sometimes not using words at all, experiencing what St Paul says in Romans 8.26: ‘Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words.’ Have a look at Psalm 34. I’ve been listening to a wonderful gospel setting of the Psalm from the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir which you can find on YouTube. Go back to the words of just this one psalm; notice the emotive language: ‘I will bless the Lord at all times;’ ‘O magnify the Lord with me, let us exalt his name together;’ ‘O taste and see that the Lord is good.’ This is prayer coming from the heart, being expressed in praise, and not forgetting to express prayer as a ‘cry’: ‘When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hear,’ prayer offered because the psalmist knows, ‘the Lord is near the broken-hearted, and saves the crushed in spirit’ (Ps 34.18).

    The 159th Synod of the Anglican Diocese of Montreal The Bishop’s Charge June 16, 2018 We meet today on the traditional territory of the Haudenosaunee and Anishinaabe First Nations. We recognize that these lands are unceded. May God our Creator guide us in wisdom, justice and love. This Synod is continuing the exercise of reflecting on what true reconciliation means to us, and how we can engage more deeply as Anglicans in the work of Truth and Reconciliation. I hope that we will walk away from this Synod with a better understanding of the issues we must face and of the circuitous and painful road towards healing and restoration. My own journey towards reconciliation has included learning more about the stories and traditions of the first peoples, taking time to listen carefully to the various voices that are speaking. Practically speaking, it has meant learning to wait for the speaker, and not trying to be the one who fixes what has been broken for a long time. Reconciliation will take much longer than some of us expect and it involves being in a relationship with people whose experiences and pain are difficult for us to hear about. The Anglican Healing Fund was established over 25 years ago in response to the on-going painful legacy of residential schools, as a way to support local, community-led projects that help with ongoing healing, recovery of culture and language. The work of the Primate’s World Relief and Development Fund in native communities is another practical contribution. Our partnership relationship with The Territory of the People (Anglican Church) has given us yet another perspective on this journey and I am grateful for their grace and fellowship in Christ as they journey along the reconciliation road toward wholeness.

    The 160th Synod of the Anglican Diocese of Montreal The Bishop’s Charge June 15, 2019 I would like to begin by acknowledging that we meet today on unceded Indigenous lands. The Kanien’kehá:ka Nation is recognized as the custodians of the lands and waters on which we gather today. Tiohtiá:k (Montreal) is historically known as a gathering place for many First Nations. Today, it is home to a diverse population of Indigenous and other peoples. We respect the continued connections with the past, present and future in our ongoing relationships with Indigenous and other peoples within the Montreal community. May God our Creator guide us in wisdom, justice and love. This Synod’s theme is “The Challenges of Evangelism: What are we inviting people to?” The Synod Planning Committee has chosen this theme for the next three years or triennium. We are very pleased to welcome our Metropolitan, Archbishop Ron Cutler, Bishop of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island and to hear him address Synod a little later today on this topic. While we gather as individuals and representatives of ministries and local parishes, each with our own concerns and challenges, I have come to appreciate more fully our partnerships in the wider Church. The readings today are for the Feast of St. Barnabas, and I’m mindful that even the early Church was involved in and strengthened by partnership and mutual support… and that was true even in times of persecution and scattering. Devotion to the Lord, worshipping together, teaching and learning, prayer and fasting, generous giving—these all characterized the people who carried the mission of the Church.

David was a native of Wales, and a relatively large amount of information is known about his life, however his birth date uncertain but his death is believed to have been around 569 AD. He is believed to be the son of St Non and the grandson of Geredig ap Cunedda, the King of Ceredigion. He became renowned as a teacher and preacher, founding monastic settlements and churches in Wales.     Anglican Communion Cycle of Prayer – interim listings for January to July 2019 The Anglican Communion’s Cycle of Prayer is a much-used and highly valued resource throughout the Anglican Communion. It is a means by which Anglicans around the world can pray for all other Anglicans, diocese-by-diocese. The Anglican Communion Office is in the midst of a period of transition with its information technology services and it has not been possible to produce the Prayer Diary for 2019 in the same way that we have done previously. Work is in hand to improve our database and internal systems. Once complete we will be able to produce, once again, the Cycle of Prayer in multiple formats. In the meantime, we hope that this interim listing, which covers the first six months of 2019, will provide you with the means to continue the global cycle of prayer for our Communion and its members.
