The ANZ Bank Tennis Development Program continues in 14 nations and the calendar of ITF W orld Junior Circuit events in the region provides opportunities for players to take their first steps on the international stage. Our ITF development officer Dan O‘Connell, assisted by an enthusiastic group of OTF development officers, has been instrumental in continuing the grassroots development of tennis. The various activities are covered in depth elsewhere in this report. After two earlier attempts to move forward with resurfacing the courts at the regional tennis centre in Lautoka, the project finally got underway in May 2008. The RTC is the focal point of tennis development in the Pacific, hosting our biggest junior events as well as being home to the ITF Regional Training Centre.

COMERICA BANK CHALLENGER 2010 “BEHINDTHE SCENESWITH STAR STRINGING” Article by Leslie López bought the Seascape Club, and established the Aptos f you want to understand tennis better, want an inside view of Challenger, now the longest-running Challenger event in the Ithe Aptos Comerica Bank Challenger Tournament at the country. And Mindell has been stringing here every year since Seascape Sports Club, and like to laugh, pay a visit to the 1994, after Rick Kepler, USTPA player and Seascape Club’s stringing room, and have a word with David Mindell. He and Tennis Director, “stuck his nose in the stringing trailer down in his colleague Doug Denton, both of Star Stringing, based in Palm Springs, work to keep both tournament competitors and club members in top form throughout the week they are here. But like the players, they are full-time pros, and this week is one among many for them: they work the tournament circuit, taking care of the stars’ racquets, and everyone else’s in between. Mindell takes his work seriously, and is never at a loss for words about it. “This is truly a gladiatorial sport,” he says, “and we are the ones who get the chance to fine-tune the instruments of that sport so people can do better when they’re out there.” References to combat aside (or perhaps in full view of how tense professional tennis can be) Mindell also works at keeping people happy. While his hands move steadily through the racquets each day—a total of about 200-300 during an average Aptos Challenger, including about 70-80 from an expanding local clientele of Seascape Club members—he keeps up a running dialogue with anyone who wanders into his shop.

Event Background Madisen’s Match was started by Duane Chaney in 2009 after the diagnosis of an inoperable brain tumor in Duane’s three year old niece Madisen.
