  • One Candle at a Time Isaiah 60 / John 1 December 3, 2017
Page 1 of 10 One Candle at a Time Isaiah 60 / John 1 December 3, 2017 Three weeks from today is Christmas Eve. (pause) Saying that out loud is actually giving me slight heart palpitations because I have not purchased one present yet, and all the decorations are still in the attic, and I don’t have a tree -- okay, Alida, breathe…. Three weeks from now is Christmas Eve, and the truth is that whatever has or hasn’t been accomplished by then, it won’t matter. Because we will be here, and we will be together. Beside me will be a tree that our children will have covered in ornaments. And there will be a moment that evening that is for me the most beautiful moment of the entire church year. And it is this: The Sanctuary lights will be turned low. We’ll begin to sing Silent Night, each one of us holding an unlit candle. And then, we’ll light one candle from the Christ Candle on our wreath, and from that one candle another candle will be lit, and another and another -- and the light will spread through the darkness, one candle at a time. Until, together, we have banished the darkness. One candle at a time. One candle at a time. Just like Christmas eve worship, Page 2 of 10 the season of Advent begins with the lighting of one single candle. On Advent wreaths in churches and homes all over the world today, one single candle is lit, one flame flickering to life in the gathering darkness of cold winter.

Let Every Heart Prepare Him Room The Advent Season Written by: Kendall Kennedy Edited by: Hayden Sentenn Note to the readers: Thank you so much for your interest in using this devotion to help teach your children about the true meaning of Christmas. When I set out to write this, I only intended using it for my own child. I often would sit her in front of me (2 years old) and read what I was writing out loud to make sure I was writing in a way that would intrigue her little brain. However, with so much prayer, I was diligent not to lessen the story of what Jesus did for us. I pray this opens their minds to the Gospel and lets them see their own need for a Savior. May they understand at an early age that action is required on their part to invite Jesus into their little hearts! I hope these lessons, pictures and activities give you an avenue to talk in depth about the love of our Savior with your littles. I am praying with you that as you read these stories, that they will grow a desire to prepare Him room in their hearts! I am also praying FOR you as you shepherd the hearts of your little ones during this Holiday season! To give credit where credit is due: every page was edited by my sweet friend, Hayden Sentenn. All images and most of the crafts are straight from Google! I do not claim them as my own! To God be the glory, great things He has done! I hope you have Merry Christmas as we celebrate the coming of our sweet Savior! Read Psalm 27:14 Decembe 6t It’s hard to wait for Christmas, isn’t it? What do you love about Christmas? I love all those things, too! Christmas is special for so many reasons, but the greatest reason is Jesus. We celebrate Jesus at PROMPT Christmas because He is the best gift, ever! PRESCHOOL PRESCHOOL As you read the Scripture above, light the first purple candle which represents hope in anticipation of the Messiah. Have you ever noticed that the longer you wait for something, the more you want it? If you wait twenty minutes for dinner, you might be happy when it’s time to eat, but you probably won’t throw a dance party. After all, you only waited twenty minutes, and dinner isn’t a big deal. But Christmas is a big deal, and it takes a loooong time to get here. We still have to wait 19 days! Each day we wait, our excitement grows as we long for Christmas more and more. This is how people felt while they waited for Jesus to come to earth. Do you know how long they waited for Him? (I’ll give you a hint — it was more than 19 days!) They waited 400 years. Imagine that! Many Christmas carols reflect how much people longed for Jesus as they waited. Listen to these words (or sing them together): Come thou long expected Jesus, born to set Thy people free. From our fears and sins release us, let us find our rest in Thee. Why were people waiting for Jesus? Because He alone could set them free.
