WELCOME TO THE COUNTY ATHLETIC FINALS I extend a very warm welcome on behalf of Golden Vale Fresh Milk Clare Community Games Executive Committee to all the young competitors participating to-day, as well as their managers and parents from the different Areas to this our fortieth County Athletic Finals. I would like to commend the Area Committees around the County for the wonderful dedication, dynamism and commitment in developeing and promoting the Community Games at local level, which now embraces every Parish in the County. The County Athletic Finals have always been the highlight of the Games’ activities and today is no exception with over 2,000 young people competing, who look forward annually to the finals. The atmosphere of the occasion proclaims more clearly than any words could, the value of the mission of Gommunity Games. It is easy, having experienced the atmosphere of the Finals to imagine the immensity of what is being achieved by each of the Area Committees in Clare along the busy road to the Finals. The Community Games continue to thrive not by accident but because of the commitment of many volunteers. To those who have given their time throughout the year I say a special thank you. You have decided to leave the sidelines and to participate. The work you have done and the time you give is a huge service, support and benefit to you community and County. 1 The young people you are working with are the adults and leaders of the future. Participating in the Community Games and learning the values of community solidarity and the voluntary effort is the best possible education that they can have. It is these principles that will sustain us and ensure a continuity of our shared values for the future. Many organizations contributed to the success of the Athletic Finals, and in particular I want to thank our present sponsor, Golden Vale Fresh Milk, for whose financial assistance we are most grateful. We are deeply indebted to the Officials of the County Athletic Association and the Athletic Clubs without whose assistance and expertise we could not run off our Athletic Finals. We acknowledge with thanks the support of Clare County Council and the Shannon Development Company over the years, our Advertisers and the assistance given by the Irish Red Cross, the Garda Siochana and the Ennis Scouts, the Clare Champion, the Clare People, Clare FM., the County Express, the County Advertisers and the Clare Courier. I would like to thank Mr Eddie Power, Town Clerk Ennis Town Council and Mr.Richard Murphy and his Staff at Lees Road for their help and assistance May you all have most pleasant and enjoyable day. John O’Sullivan President MESSAGE FROM FIACH McHUGH, COUNTY CHAIRMAN I am delighted to welcome Golden Vale Fresh Milk as our main sponsor. Their sponsorship has greatly enabled us to expand our programme of sporting and cultural activities to many more young people throughout the County. A special word of thanks to all our advertisers and the other sponsors. Our sincere appreciation to Clare County Council for their continued grant funding. The lasting support of our sponsors has, I feel, been been fully vindicated by the achievements of Clare Community Games in bringing the family spirit and values of the movement into our forty Areas of Community 2 life in the County. A wholesome life is what we all want to experience and live. That means a good healthy mixture of family love and affection mingled with faith, culture and recreation. Sport and games, played competitively or merely for enjoyment, recreate us physically, mentally and emotionally. Mens sana in corpore sano - A healthy mind in a healthy body - is then the appropriate motto of Community Games. I wish everyone competing the very best of luck and hope you all have an enjoyable and memorable day. Fiach McHugh County Chairman TRIBUTE TO THE OFFICIALS I would like to express my thanks and appreciation to you, the hundreds of volunteers throughout the County for the generous contribution you have made to the Games during the year. Your spirit of generousity and pride in your Community has proved that your hearts are in the right place. A special word of thanks to all who helped to prepare the Athletic Arena and run off the athletic finals. I would like to thank all the officials, managers, co-ordinators and Area Committees for their whole hearted co- operation, assistance and support to me during the year. A special word of appreciation is due to this year’s finalists for the very considerable success you have already accomplished. I wish you all every good luck and enjoyment to-day.
