National Certifying Examination for Surgical Technologists: A comprehensive written examination required for official certification by the Association of Surgical Technolo- gists. 11. The title TS-C (Tech in – Certified) is given to someone who has successfully passed the certification exam offered by the National Commission for Competency Testing. The title CST (Certified Surgical Technologist) is given to someone who has successfully passed the certification exam offered by the Association of Surgical Technologists.

12. The preferred educational pathway for the surgical technologist is a 2-year college degree. Individuals may also receive training in the armed forces or through proprietary (for profit) vocational schools.
