Platt College Catalog Addendum Catalog Effective: July 13, 2018 Addendum & Supplements Effective: 01/02/2019 The following program has been added to the Programs section, including course descriptions: Surgical Technologist (Offered at Platt College OKC North Campus) The Surgical Technologist program is designed to provide students with a foundation in the basic sciences and subjects unique to the operating room. The program is designed for students interested in becoming part of an integral team of medical practitioners that provide surgical care to patients in a variety of settings. The surgical technologist works under medical supervision to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures. This individual works under the supervision of a surgeon to ensure that the operating environment is safe, equipment functions properly and the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. Graduates will perform entry-level duties in a variety of areas that may include hospital settings, ambulatory surgery centers, labor and delivery areas, cardiac catheterization laboratories, physician’s offices and other areas where invasive procedures are performed. The program consists of 684 didactic hours and 560 clinical hours with a minimum case load of 120 cases. The program is accredited through CAAHEP. This accreditation allows graduates to sit for the National Certifying Exam for Surgical Technologists upon completion of the program. Prerequisite: None ST1002 Surgical Procedures This course provides the student with sequential instruction in the fundamentals of surgical procedures. Prerequisite: None ST1003 Bio-medical Sciences This course will provide the student with a foundation of understanding of the 20 Total Clock Hours basics of physics and robotics and of electricity and electrical flow as it relates to 1.0 Quarter Credit Hours the surgical setting. Prerequisite: None ST1004 Disease Process and Pathophysiology This course provides the opportunity to understand and relate pathophysiology 32 Total Clock Hours to surgical interventions, analyze the relationship between cell pathology and disease, examine hemodynamic disorders, inflammation and infection. Students 2.0 Quarter Credit Hours will compare and contrast various surgical pathologies of each body system. Prerequisite: None ST1005 This course provides an introduction to micro-organisms with emphasis on their Microbiology classification, structure, growth, metabolism and genetics. Control of microbial 15 Total Clock Hours growth as well as defense responses of the host are included. Prerequisite: None ST1007 Upon completion of all coursework required of the Surgical Technologist Externship I program, students will perform 560 hours of externship experiences. Externship I, ST1007 will be 210 hours and Externship II, ST1008 will be 350 hours. 210 Total Clock Hours Students will be placed in a medical facility, under supervision, to perform the 7.0 Quarter Credit Hours administrative and clinical tasks learned in the program. ST1008 Upon completion of all coursework required of the Surgical Technologist program, students will perform 560 hours of externship experiences. Externship Externship II I, ST1007 will be 210 hours and Externship II, ST1008 will be 350 hours. 350 Total Clock Hours Students will be placed in a medical facility, under supervision, to perform the 11.5 Quarter Credit Hours administrative and clinical tasks learned in the program. Students will be evaluated by the supervisor of the externship facility and the College supervisor based on skills required of the surgical technologist as well as attendance, initiative and professional practices. Prior to completion of this course, students Prerequisite: All other program courses. will sit for the Certified Surgical Technologist exam, as required for accreditor standards. The exam will be administered on the last day of class on the Platt College campus. Surgical Technologist program utilizes uses computers, printers, monitoring equipment, centrifuges, autoclaves, microscopes, surgical tools and instruments, and various other supplies and equipment such as, or similar to, that found in a surgical setting. The Veterans Benefits Programs section of the catalog has been updated to include required trademark information. Campus locations approved by the Oklahoma State Authorizing Agency are able to certify Veterans and process Veterans Benefits. Many Veterans and active duty personnel can qualify for more than one education benefits program. Available programs include Post 911 (Chapter 33), Montgomery GI Bill ® (Chapter 30), Survivor and Dependents Educational Assistance Program (DEA/Chapter 35), Montgomery GI Selected and Reserve (Chapter 1606), and Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grants (Awarded to eligible students who had a parent or guardian that dies as a result of military service in Iraq or Afghanistan after September 11, 2001).
