  • The Over-Production of US Sports and the New International
2003 “The Over-Production of US Sports and the New International Division of Cultural Labor.” (with David Rowe, Jim McKay, and Geoffrey Lawrence) International Review for the Sociology of Sport 38, no. 4: 427-40. 02_IRS articles 38/4 10/24/03 9:32 AM Page 428 428 INTERNATIONAL REVIEW FOR THE SOCIOLOGY OF SPORT 38(4) ing link derived from cold-war surrogacy and postcolonial hangovers. The anec- dote’s lesson is clear: that the globalization of sport is equally about the appeal of sport and its imbrication with world capitalism. The Taliban’s decision to affiliate with the ICC illustrates the complex and contradictory links among sport, politics, and global capitalism in a country that is on the economic and political periphery. We can discern similar intricacies and tensions at one of the epicenters of global capitalism, the USA. It is highly para- doxical that while US sport has been used as a quintessential signifier of laissez- faire values, both inside and outside the country, it is heavily protected, operating in an economically uncompetitive, welfarist environment. We investigate this important but understudied contradiction of protectionism via the global traffic in both workers and audiences associated with US professional sport. This echoes the approach we have recently used to analyze the uneven but interconnected processes that characterize the present moment in sport, via a New International Division of Cultural Labor (NICL) that governs globalization, television, and commodification (Miller et al., 2001a). The most significant development since the publication of that work has been the bust following the boom in TV sports, notably in the US, Germany, and Britain.

The Boston Red Sox Saturday, November 7, 2020 * The Boston Globe Alex Cora to return to Red Sox as manager, 10 months after parting ways in wake of sign-stealing scandal Alex Speier Meet the new manager, same as the old manager. The Red Sox announced they will bring back Alex Cora for a second term as manager. The decision comes almost 10 months and one dismal season after the two parties agreed to part ways in January amidst a mushrooming scandal. Cora’s new deal is for two years with a two-year club option after the 2022 season. “I am grateful for the opportunity to manage once again and return to the game I have loved my entire life. … Boston is where I have always wanted to be and I could not be more excited to help the Red Sox achieve our ultimate goal of winning in October,” Cora said in a team-issued press release. “This past year, I have had time to reflect and evaluate many things, and I recognize how fortunate I am to lead this team once again. Not being a part of the game of baseball, and the pain of bringing negative attention to my family and this organization was extremely difficult. I am sorry for the harm my past actions have caused and will work hard to make this organization and its fans proud.” Cora’s 27-month tenure as manager ended abruptly in January when MLB determined he’d played a central role as the bench coach of the 2017 Astros in an illegal sign-stealing scheme and the Red Sox were under investigation for a lesser but similar infraction.

  • NATIONAL COLLEGIATE BASEBALL WRITERS NEWSLETTER (Volume 42, No
NATIONAL COLLEGIATE BASEBALL WRITERS NEWSLETTER (Volume 42, No. 4, May 2, 2003) NCBWA President’s Message By NCBWA President Rob Carolla Greetings from the President’s Desk as we present the latest edition of the NCBWA newsletter. We’re once again in the heart of the baseball season, as teams begin to jockey for positions in their conference championships. We’ve had some exciting games in my league this season, and I’m sure the same can be said around the country. One of the first items in this edition is information about voting for the NCBWA All-America Teams. On that topic, please remember to “Get Out The Vote” and submit your selections to Bo Carter for each round during the voting process. No other organization in American does as thorough a job on selecting its postseason honors and I think that is a tribute to the NCBWA and all of its members. A special thanks to Bo for all his hard work! In the last newsletter, I suggested a regular feature clarifying unusual or noteworthy scoring issues that surface during a college baseball game. Included this time is “A Scoring Philosophy”, submitted by the distinguished official scorer of the College World Series in Omaha, Louis J. Spry (see page 8 of this newsletter). Lou has been handling the official duties at the CWS for many years, and his philosophy is a very sound one that should be reviewed by every official scorer. For those of you involved in scoring (or even if you’re not!) please take a moment to look it over – it’s a great guideline.

  • 2011 MLB All-Star Game on FOX Broadcast Guide
2011 MLB ALL-STAR GAME ON FOX Tuesday, July 12 - 8:00 PM ET - Live from Chase Field in Phoenix FOX Sports and MLB are proud to present baseball's brightest stars, all on one stage, Tuesday, July 12 (8:00 PM ET-conclusion) during the 82 nd Major League Baseball All-Star Game, live from Chase Field in Phoenix. It is the 13 th MLB All-Star Game broadcast by FOX Sports (1997, 1999, 2001-11), and all have been called by play-by-play announcer Joe Buck and analyst Tim McCarver (Bob Brenly worked with Buck & McCarver in 1997 & '99). McCarver, a two-time National League All-Star catcher with the Cardinals (1966 & 1967), is calling the 20 th All-Star Game of his Hall of Fame-worthy broadcasting career, the most by any broadcaster in history. The pairing of Buck and McCarver for 13 All-Star Games is also a record. The next closest duo are Curt Gowdy and Tony Kubek, who called a total of seven All-Star Games together from 1969 to 1975. Buck and McCarver are joined by MLB on FOX Insider Ken Rosenthal reporting from the field.
