The contest allowed students to portray an interpretation of the birth of Jesus Christ as seen through their eyes. A total of 53 entries were submitted from 27 schools this year, and four winners were selected from contest entries among four age categories. The image on the left is by Kristen Landsman, a senior at Delone Catholic High School in McSherrystown, and the image at the right is by Abby Caruso, an eighth grader at St. Catherine Labouré School in Harrisburg. The other two winning images were featured on the cover of the December 8 edition. The spotlight swung to the nation’s third-largest city. ‘Wow,’ visitors said. ‘Look at that high-flying architecture. That blue, sailboat-dotted water stretching over the horizon. That whimsical public art studding the street corners.’ The accolades continued: ‘Hey, there’s a globe-spanning foodie culture. And loads of Beard- award-winning chefs. And the continent’s top restaurant, Alinea, cooks in the Windy City.’ Then the deal sealer: ‘Megabashes like Lollapalooza, Blues Fest and Pitchfork rock downtown almost every weekend in summer, while smaller concerts happen every night at Millennium Park for free!’ Chicagoans shook their heads and smiled, too polite to point out that, yes, that’s Chicago, and it has been here – right at the nation’s core – all along.

RIGHT: Margaret Sullivan’s tiny Christmas tree which she and David Burrow set up in their suite at the Carleton of Oak Park. Margaret and I had a wonderful time when we spent a week in Chicago a couple of summers ago. Still, there were a lot of things we would have liked to see on that trip that we didn’t get to see. So, since this was the year that the whole family was spending the holidays at their in-laws, we decided it would be fun to spend our Christmas in Chicago. The trip was nearly a year in the planning, and it centered around going to stage shows around the city. With my newly acquired skills on the Internet, we managed to book some excellent reservations—the backbone of a wonderful trip. [This would be the first of MANY return trips to Chicago I’d make, pretty much all of which included stays at various hotels I’d book online. I’d make countless long weekends at holidays and in summers over the next decade, and I’d end up staying at just about every remotely affordable place near transit—some in the city proper and others as far away as Aurora and Michigan City, Indiana.
