At first pass, Whitmer’s special and album make a relevant, hilarious articulation of one tragic childhood, of the messiness of masculinity, of the timeless qualms of being broke with a dream in Los Angeles, and the humiliation inherent in having “a dream” at all. Before Steve Goodman landed a record deal in 1971, and a few years before his classic “City Of New Orleans” became a modern folk standard, he was already a seasoned live performer throughout his hometown of Chicago and surrounding areas. His brilliant songwriting and musicianship, coupled with his engaging on-stage personality and distinctive performance style, made him a favorite of anyone who caught a live show.

In 1969, University of Illinois student Rich Warren hosted his own folk-music program called Changes, modeled after WFMT’s classic The Midnight Special. He was a fan of Goodman’s work, and booked a show at the school’s Auditorium, headlined by Steve. Warren also brought a Tandberg 64X tape deck with two Shure ribbon mikes, an AKG 202E mike and a primitive Shure mixer along to capture the performance. Over five decades later, this influential performance finally sees the light of day.

Live ’69 captures Goodman as his star was rising in the folk scene, and is notable because the show was comprised of 12 wide-ranging covers—from standards to songs by Willie Dixon, Merle Haggard, and Bob Dylan, to a four-song medley including songs by and Jefferson Airplane, it’s a unique show in Steve Goodman’s recorded body of work.

As Warren states in his liner notes: “I’ve been involved with folk radio for 50 years, and have recorded hundreds of artists. I’ve rarely seen anyone with the energy, vibrancy, vast repertoire and crowd pleasing ability as Steve Goodman. This recording proves that even before he composed ‘City Of New Orleans’ he owned the stage”

Melkbelly sculpts their signature balance between subtle melody and frantic noise on new album PITH, their second for Carpark Records/Wax Nine. The Chicago-based foursome has made spatial dynamics central to its arrangements, reaching for weirder highs and more startling atmo- spherics, negative space giving way to enveloping walls of chaos. This sense of form is reflected not only in the purposeful production, but in the ceramic cover art created by Chicago artist Deborah Handler.

Recording in two short sessions six months apart, the band worked with longtime collaborator Dave Vettraino, this time at Bloomington, Indiana’s Russian Recording. Alongside an arsenal of rock gear and airy synth layers coaxed from a Moog Prodigy, PITH’s multidimensionality was refined by the studio’s collection of rare Russian tube mics, which were placed in every corner to capture Melkbelly’s unabashed loudness. Frontperson Miranda Winters’ charmingly bright vocals are newly ef- fected, delayed to a menacing, mysterious thickness. Guitars, handled by Miranda and Bart Winters, interlock and separate with dizzying ease, riffs dissolving into floating trails and reappearing with metallic edges. Bassist Liam Winters’ low grooves bounce and kick along with drummer James Wetzel’s rhythmically unsettling performance, which stretches time yet never falters.

After two years touring internationally, the band felt comfortable enough to rearrange songs they knew well, their renewed closeness guiding them. Among the great things that I remember about these sessions were the superb players and singers who just showed up. Richard Ace had been living in England, but dropped in while on vacation in Jamaica and contrib- uted great keyboards to three selections. When asked what motivates her to make music, Johanna Warren responds immediately: “Music is vibration; it’s a direct way to affect matter. A song is a way to journey into places of discord and then resolve back into harmony.” The nomadic /multi-instrumentalist constructs complex, gossamer folk compositions that draw from the richness of the human experience and her own unique flavor of mysticism. Her 2015 sophomore album, nūmūn, found its way on to several notable year end lists and led Magazine to name her a “Songwriter You Need to Know.”

In 2016, Warren released Gemini I, the first of a pair of concep- tually connected albums written and recorded in the throes of a rocky romantic relationship with another artist. “All the songs on both records are about a complicated three-year relationship with a Gemini man,” she says. “It was very much a ‘twin flame’ situation. We were working with bright light and intense shadow.” As a way to process this emotional chaos, Warren began to write in earnest as a form of self-therapy. Eschewing the more abstract lyricism of her earlier work, she began to create a suite of confessional songs about the blessing and the curse of romantic love.
