Schon die zwei EPs, die die Australier zuvor rausgebracht haben, hatten ziemlichen Erfolg: Die Single „Is This How You Feel“ gehörte 2013 zu den höchst gehandelten Stücken in ihrer Heimat, wurde Neunter im prestigeträchtigen Vergleich der Top 100 des Radiosender Triple J (bei dem die Hörer entscheiden), gewann den mit 50.000 Dollar ziemlich hoch gesponserten Vanda & Young Prize und wurde für den Aria Award nominiert. Das Stück ist aber auch zu lässig: Die Stimme von Sängerin Isabella Manfredi klingt so cool und doch so verführerisch wie geschmolzenes Vanille-Eis. Zusammen mit ihrem Partner Gideon Bensen, der sie im Chor unterstützt, fließt sie durch den Song, getragen vom Gitarrenfluss, vom Keyboard umspielt wie von Wasser, getrieben vom pluckernden Schlagzeug. Zwischen Zurückhaltung und Rhythmus mündet das Stück in einem Refrain, für dessen Musikalität manch anderer töten würde. Jetzt ist das Album in die „iTunes Best of 2014“-Liste aufgenommen worden, kaum dass es auf dem Markt ist. Kein Wunder, zeigt es doch die gleichen Qualitäten wie die gefeierte Single. Das Ding ist irgendwie funky wie die 70er, cool wie die 80er, rockig wie die (frühen) 90er und so aktuell wie es geht, ohne – um Missverständnisse sofort auszuräumen – dabei im Mindesten so zu klingen wie eines dieser Formatradios mit ähnlichem Werbejingle. Im Gegenteil: The Preatures sind wirklich originell, neu, eine Rockband, von der behauptet wurde, sie verbinde The Velvet Underground mit Motown. Bei ihrer ersten kurzen Deutschland-Tour im Februar überzeugten das Quintett mit Witz und Spielfreude, jetzt haben The Preatures bestätigt, dass im kommenden Februar/März erneut zu uns kommen werden, um auch live zu unterstreichen, wie cool und heiß zugleich wirklich geht. I begin this chapter by arguing against any sort of prescriptive defnitions for Indigenous Australian music. I will then illustrate change in public discourse on Indigenous music by examining the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) awards for Best Indigenous Release (1987–1998) and for Best World Music Album (1999–2016). Te chapter then proceeds to highlight two increasingly common features of the work of Indigenous musical artists: reference to one’s specifc Indigenous cultural identity (e.g. Noongar, Bundjalung, Yorta Yorta) in popular music performance, and writing and performing popular music in Indigenous languages. Te chapter concludes by illustrating how frequently Indigenous artists collaborate with non-Indigenous artists in the production and performance of popular music. Dawn Walker Monday, 28 May 2018 Legislative Council Page 1 The CHAIR: Good afternoon and welcome to the second hearing of the Portfolio Committee No. 6— Planning and Environment, Inquiry into the Music and Arts Economy in New South Wales. The inquiry is examining the New South Wales Government's progress in implementing its response to the Sydney Night-Time Economy Roundtable Action Plan policies to support music and arts culture, including permanent and temporary venue spaces, and policy and legislation options drawn from other jurisdictions. The Committee is also considering whether local councils are setting realistic noise abatement and environmental impact targets in their consideration of development applications from cafes, restaurants and live music venues. Before I commence, I acknowledge the Gadigal people, who are the traditional custodians of this land. I pay my respects to the elders, past and present, of the Eora Nation and extend that respect to other Aboriginal people who may be present or listening online today.
