On tour with Shawn Mullins Alternative Press recommends Good Old War WHY YOU SHOULD KNOW THEM: Anthony Green’s backing band - with their intricate acoustic arrangements and perfect three-part harmonies - are throwbacks to a time when music was made by musicicans huddled around a single microphone. YOU LIKE? YOU’LL LIKE: Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young / Fleet Foxes / Simon & Garfunkel Change was blowing his way, but Keith Goodwin didn’t know it. In the spring of 2005, the pop-punk outfit he’d help create, Days Away, were an internet buzz band with a debut album on Fueled By Ramen. But 18 months later, the band unceremoniously announced they were no longer on the label’s roster and shortly afterwards called it quits. It’s a sad and all-too-common tale, but one that takes an unexpected plot twist. “A lot of pop-punk bands are started when [the members] are really young, and you tend to grow into other stuff,” explains the vocalist and guitarist. “With Days Away, we all just wanted to play loud and crazy, but I’ve also always wanted to do stuff that was more acoustic and focused on vocals.” When Goodwin and Days Away drummer Tim Arnold found themselves suddenly without a full-time band, they were free to follow this new yet not-so-new musical direction. They enlisted their friend, Unlikely Cowboy frontman Dan Schwartz, to play bass and provide vocals, thus forming Good Old War - an unabashed ode to the delicate sounds and intricate harmonies of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young and Simon & Garfunkel. “It’s a group of people getting together and being able to jam whenever, wherever and just enjoy singing,” says Goodwin. “It’s not about how crazy we can be, [it’s about] focusing on the vocals and the harmonies.” Shortly after becoming a unit, Good Old War were enlisted by their friend Anthony Green to back him on his first solo album, Avalon. (“They’re my favorite band,” says Green. “I feel like I live inside their songs.”) The band also traveled with Green to last spring’s South By Southwest and Bamboozle festivals before venturing on their own to Los Angeles in May to lay down their debut, Only Way To Be Alone, with producer Rick Parker (who also produced Days Away’s final EP, Ear Candy For The Head Phone Trippers). “We did all the music live,” says Goodwin. “We took a month or two and just jammed out a bunch of songs and figured out how to play every single thing we wanted to put on the record. Then all three of us sang around one microphone together. And that was it.” Aside from performing the sort of throwback songs that haven’t been on the FM airwaves (aside from classic-rock stations) for three decades, the trio are focused on something else that hasn’t been prevalent in rock music since then - fun. “Every night, everybody I’m playing with is singing together and having a good time,” says Goodwin. At the time of this interview, that list included Green, since he gave Good Old War an opening spot on his solo tour, putting them in front of audiences of all ages. “People are digging it,” says Goodwin with a laugh. “I find that kids’ parents get really into us.” Jenny Lewis’ live show kills ‘em in Seattle “Jenny Lewis, singer for Rilo Kiley and Conor Oberst, the one-man constant behind Bright Eyes, proved to be an amazing double bill of indie rock Sunday night. The pair more or less left a sold-out crowd at the Showbox at the Market floored after nearly three hours of rock, country and singer-songwriter bliss. Lewis set them up with her beautiful, sultry vocals and Oberst, who was backed by the spectacular Mystic Valley Band, knocked them down with his heartfelt lyrics and a few rocking covers. Lewis began her set with "Happy," a lazy, upbeat number. After the first verse it was immediately clear while a capable five-piece band accompanied her, Lewis' voice was the most powerful instrument on stage. That was also evident during "Acid Tongue" when band members stepped away from their instruments and backed Lewis with harmonies while she sang with the spotlight all to herself. She picked things up a bit during "See Fernando," "Carpetbaggers," (sang as a duet with guitarist Johnathan Rice) and the near nine-minute epic "Last Messiah." The energy during the latter was practically palpable with the three-part song shifting gears from soft and slow to heavy and fast within seconds. Lewis sexily swayed and shook her body throughout her 12-song set that could have easily been headlining material.” - Seattle Post-Intelligencer For up-to-the-minute AAA news...
