GINA HECHT* (STELLA CONLIN) Gina's stage credits include starring in two productions of Neil Simon’s Broadway Bound (La Mirada and the Odyssey - the latter directed by Jason Alexander). Gina also had the pleasure of playing another Neil Simon lead- ing lady in Prisoner of Second Avenue, starring opposite Jason Alexander (this will be a recurring theme). Pro- ductions that did not involve Jason, were the award-win- ning Circle of Will, originally directed by Glenn Casale, for which her performance was honored with an LA Weekly Award. She received Drama-Logue Awards for the Los Angeles premieres of Night Owls and another for Wrestlers, directed by Glenn Casale, and where she was fortunate enough to share the stage with Mark Harmon, George Clooney and Bryan Cranston. Gina has appeared in more than a dozen films, the first being Night Shift as Henry Winkler’s neurotic fiancée, and her television career spans four decades with re- curring roles on Mork and Mindy, Glee, Heartbeat, Everything’s Relative (where she co-starred with Jason Alexander), Life Goes On, The District, Any Day Now, Hung, and Seinfeld (Jason again). Nominated for an Emmy last year for her role in the short form series “Broken”, she has appeared in over 200 television shows and 60 films including: Sum of All Fears, Sneakers, Field of Dreams, Cobra, The Babysitter, Lovely and Amazing, One Hour Photo, The Angriest Man In Brooklyn. She went on to work in Television Pro- duction in Los Angeles as a Writer’s Assistant and Script Supervisor on such shows as Beauty and the Beast, The Larry Sanders Show, and Seinfeld. She stopped working in order to raise 3 beautiful children. Later, in retro- spect, she realized she’d much rather be the person in the show rather than watching the show. So she studied the Sanford Meisner Technique at the Ruskin Group Theatre in Santa Monica. She is thrilled to have the opportunity to understudy under Lee Garlington and work with Jason Alexander and the rest of the cast and crew. She is beyond grateful to John Ruskin and Mikey Myers for all their support. JIM STAPLETON (FRANK CONLIN UNDER- STUDY) Jim is thrilled to be making his debut with the Ruskin Group Theatre. A native of New York City Jim’s early training included Freddy Kareman, David LeGrant, Julie Bovasso and Margot Moser.

  • Filmic Tomboy Narrative and Queer Feminist Spectatorship
UNHAPPY MEDIUM: FILMIC TOMBOY NARRATIVE AND QUEER FEMINIST SPECTATORSHIP A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Lynne Stahl May 2015 © 2015 Lynne Stahl ALL RIGHTS RESERVED UNHAPPY MEDIUM: FILMIC TOMBOY NARRATIVE AND QUEER FEMINIST SPECTATORSHIP Lynne Stahl, Ph.D. Cornell University, 2015 ABSTRACT This dissertation investigates the ways in which American discourses of gender, sexuality, and emotion structure filmic narrative and the ways in which filmic narrative informs those discourses in turn. It approaches this matter through the figure of the tomboy, vastly undertheorized in literary scholarship, and explores the nodes of resistance that film form, celebrity identity, and queer emotional dispositions open up even in these narratives that obsessively domesticate their tomboy characters and pair them off with male love interests. The first chapter theorizes a mode of queer feminist spectatorship, called infelicitous reading, around the incoherently “happy” endings of tomboy films and obligatorily tragic conclusions of lesbian films; the second chapter links the political and sexual ambivalences of female-centered sports films to the ambivalent results of Title IX; and the third chapter outlines a type of queer reproductivity and feminist paranoia that emerges cumulatively in Jodie Foster’s body of work. Largely indebted to the work of Judith Butler, Lauren Berlant, and Sara Ahmed, this project engages with past and present problematics in the fields of queer theory, feminist film criticism, and affect studies—questions of nondichotomous genders, resistant spectatorship and feminist potential within linear narrative, and the chronological cues that dominant ideology builds into our understandings of gender, sexuality, narrative, and emotions.

  • LGBTQ Episodic Television Study Guide
Archive Study Guide: LESBIAN, GAY, BISEXUAL AND TRANSGENDER TELEVISION: SITCOMS AND EPISODIC DRAMAS ARCHIVE STUDY GUIDE The representation of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) communities on television is marked by a history of stereotypes and inexplicable invisibility. By the 1970s, gay media-watch groups communicated their concerns to the television industry and a sense of cooperation began to emerge between the LG BT community and broadcasters. During the 1980s, the AIDS crisis and resulting prejudices ushered in a new era of problematic and offensive portrayals. In the late 1990s, Ellen Degeneres' landmark coming out, (both in real- life, and through the character she portrayed in her sitcom), generated much controversy and discussion, ultimately paving the way for well -developed gay characters in prominent primetime TV roles. Despite such advances, stereotypes continue to resurface and perpetuate, and the full diversity of the LGBT community is more often than not underrepresented in the mass media.
