Audrey Lang Whalen Symposium 2017 The Women of Law and Order: Special Victims Unit “Role models really matter. It’s hard to imagine yourself as something you don’t see.” Chelsea Clinton said that, and repeating those words shouldn’t be a divisive political statement. It’s true that girls need role models in real life, and it is true as well that the depiction of strong female characters in the media is another way that girls can “see themselves.” Some of the major women on Law and Order: Special Victims Unit have demonstrated this phenomenon: Lieutenant Olivia Benson, Detectives Amanda Rollins and Dani Beck, Assistant District Attorneys Alexandra Cabot and Casey Novak, Judge Elizabeth Donnelly, Medical Examiner Melinda Warner, and Kathy Stabler. Law and Order: SVU is a television series broadcast on NBC that first aired in 1999 and now is in its eighteenth season and is the longest currently-running scripted non-animated primetime television series on a major broadcast network in the United States, since the original show from which it stemmed, Law and Order, was cancelled in 2010. The show was created when Law and Order creator and executive producer Dick Wolf wrote an episode for the original franchise based upon the rape/murder case of Jennifer Levin, and it continued to haunt him. Law and Order: SVU depicts fictional characters within the actual sex crimes unit of the New York Police Department, the Special Victims Unit. Much of the series follows Olivia Benson, a character who has been on the show for all eighteen seasons, as she rises from detective to sergeant to lieutenant and as she experiences changes in her personal life. -

Can television promote a more progressive definition of rape and help delegitimize it?: Rape in Law and Order: Special Victims Unit Author: Isabel Ramos Hernández Persistent link: http://hdl.handle.net/2345/bc-ir:106783 This work is posted on eScholarship@BC, Boston College University Libraries. Can television promote a more progressive definition of rape and help delegitimize it?: Rape in Law and Order: Special Victims Unit Isabel Ramos Hernández Senior Honors Thesis Sociology Department, Boston College Advised by Lynda Lytle Holmstrom May 15th 2016 ABSTRACT Rape is a socially constructed behavior used in patriarchal societies to devalue women and ensure male supremacy. Being socially constructed means that the definition of rape can change. This thesis addresses the question of whether an established institution—television—can promote a more progressive definition of rape and help delegitimize it. It uses a feminist content analysis to examine the main themes on 14 episodes of Law and Order: Special Victims Unit (SVU) aired from 2012-2015. It is qualitative and inductive in nature, approached from a grounded theory perspective. The data demonstrate that SVU does, to some extent, present a more progressive view of rape instead of perpetuating the common stereotypes of rape. Essentially, SVU represents a new variety of definitions of rape that are reflective of white, privileged, heterosexual and young women's experiences in the United States. Race, class, sexual orientation and identity are barely taken into account even though many social inequalities based on them characterize American life. -

“IT REVEALS WHO I REALLY AM”: NEW METAPHORS, SYMBOLS, AND MOTIFS IN REPRESENTATIONS OF AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDERS IN POPULAR CULTURE By Summer Joy O’Neal A Dissertation Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English Middle Tennessee State University 2013 Dissertation Committee: Dr. Angela Hague, Chair Dr. David Lavery Dr. Robert Petersen Copyright © 2013 Summer Joy O’Neal ii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS There simply is not enough thanks to thank my family, my faithful parents, T. Brian and Pamela O’Neal, and my understanding sisters, Auburn and Taffeta, for their lifelong support; without their love, belief in my strengths, patience with my struggles, and encouragement, I would not be in this position today. I am forever grateful to my wonderful director, Dr. Angela Hague, whose commitment to this project went above and beyond what I deserved to expect. To the rest of my committee, Dr. David Lavery and Dr. Robert Petersen, for their seasoned advice and willingness to participate, I am also indebted. Beyond these, I would like to recognize some “unofficial” members of my committee, including Dr. Elyce Helford, Dr. Alicia Broderick, Ari Ne’eman, Chris Foss, and Melanie Yergau, who graciously offered me necessary guidance and insightful advice for this project, particularly in the field of Disability Studies. Yet most of all, Ephesians 3.20-21. iii ABSTRACT Autism has been sensationalized by the media because of the disorder’s purported prevalence: Diagnoses of this condition that was traditionally considered to be quite rare have radically increased in recent years, and an analogous fascination with autism has emerged in the field of popular culture.
