Richard Butsch Rider University, Lawrenceville A HALF CENTURY OF CLASS AND GENDER in American TV Domestic Sitcoms Over a half-century of television, domestic situation comedies have reinforced images of the middle class as better than the working class. Similar inequalities have been portrayed for men versus women, black versus white, old versus young, and for other status hierarchies. Already embedded in the larger culture, these stereotypes are used to signify character types that advance dramatic goals. Nevertheless, the pervasiveness of network tele- vision and the persistence over five decades have contributed immeasurably to reproducing these same stereotypes. Women, for example, have been cast as main characters only where the subjects of romance or family are salient; they have been absent from rational discussions in scripts [Gerbner, 1972]. Women’s presence thus signals certain themes. Similarly, traits culturally associated with a lower status, applied to a person of higher status devalues that person. Men are devalued by characte- rizing them as feminine. Such status inversion can then effectively confirm other lower statuses held by the person. Female, black and lower-class adults have been devalued by characterizing them as child-like. Child-like attribu- tions undercut their adult status, confirming their lower status as female, black or lower-class. -

“Make Room for Daddy” – Season 6 Debuts in a Deluxe Five Disc Box Set from S’More Entertainment on January 22
“MAKE ROOM FOR DADDY” – SEASON 6 DEBUTS IN A DELUXE FIVE DISC BOX SET FROM S’MORE ENTERTAINMENT ON JANUARY 22 S’more Entertainment announces the upcoming January 22 release of “Make Room For Daddy”, the complete sixth season, a deluxe 5 DVD collection of all 32 episodes. One of the longest running comedies of the 50’s, “Make Room For Daddy” ran from September, 1953 until September, 1964. The series was nominated for 14 Emmy® Awards, winning four, including “Best Situation Comedy and “Best Actor” for Danny. The series was a reflection of Danny Thomas’ own life as an entertainer and the problems created by the frequent absences from his children. Even the title came from a phrase used in the real-life Thomas household: whenever Danny returned from a tour, his 2 daughters (Marlo and Terre) had to shift bedrooms to “Make Room For Daddy”. In the series, Danny plays nightclub entertainer Danny Williams, an occasionally loud and cantankerous, but ultimately warm and soft-hearted master of his domain. Constantly being upstaged by his bratty but loveable kids, played by Rusty Hamer, Angela Cartwright and Terry Williams (whose role was taken over by Penny Parker), the ensemble also included beautiful Marjorie Lord as his understanding wife, and legendary character actor Hans Conreid as irascible Uncle Tonoose. “Make Room For Daddy” was unique for many reasons, including how it portrayed the family life of an entertainer dealing with both industry and ordinary family issues. Another reason was its frequent appearances by top celebrities. In this Season 6 boxed-set, William Demarest, Jack Benny, Dinah Shore, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Shirley Jones, and Bob Hope are but a few of the legendary performers lending their talents. -

Women’s Leadership in Primetime Television An Introductory Study Natalie Greene Spring 2009 General University Honors Capstone Advisor: Karen O’Connor Greene 1 Women’s Leadership in Prime-time Television: An Introductory Study Introduction When television executives report their core audience, women always come out ahead. A 2007 Nielsen Media Research report showed that, with only two exceptions, every broadcast network channel had more female viewers than men. ABC’s female audience almost doubled its male audience during the 2007-08 season (Atkinson, 2008). 1 Women onscreen, however, seem to reflect a different reality, making up only 43% of characters in the prime-time 2007-08 season (Lauzen, 2008). 2 As studies going back as far as the 1970s show, women on screen not only fail to represent the proportional makeup of women in society, they also overwhelmingly show a stereotypically gendered version of women (McNeil, 1975; Signorielli and Bacue, 1999; United States Commission on Civil Rights, 1977). This paper aims to address the evolution of women’s leadership in prime-time network scripted television from 1950 to 2008. Because of the way that women have been traditionally marginalized in television, it is important to study the shows that have featured women as lead characters. Characters such as Lucy Ricardo ( I Love Lucy, 1951-1960) influenced later female leads such as Ann Marie ( That Girl, 1966-1971), Mary Richards ( The Mary Tyler Moore Show, 1970-1977) and Murphy Brown ( Murphy Brown, 1988-1998). Thus, along with an introduction to socialization theory and feminist television criticism, this paper covers a selection of some of the most influential female characters and women-centered shows of this period.
