BAUER.COM 2011 BAUER NATIONAL INVITATIONAL ELITE LEAGUE PROVIDES OPPORTUNITY FOR UPPER MIDWEST HOCKEY PLAYERS Welcome to the 2011 Bauer National Invitational Tournament. This weekend’s tournament is the final event of the 2011 season for the Upper Midwest High School Elite Hockey League, a league formed to provide growth opportunities for the game of hockey and for players from across the upper Midwest. It’s no secret that Minnesotans love their high school hockey. It’s part of the culture here in the “State of Hockey.” Unabashed passion for the game reaches its pinnacle each March with the Minnesota State High School Hockey Tournament, a four-day showcase that draws more than CHANGE 100,000 fans to St. Paul. About a decade ago, many of the state’s premier players found themselves looking for opportu- nities to play more games and against competition stronger than a typical high school schedule provided. The Upper Midwest High School Elite Hockey League was founded to help meet that need. THE Each year the league conducts an extensive series of tryouts, consults high school coaches from around the state and selects about 120 players to compete in the Elite League’s fall season. Teams are formed around geographic regions, giving the league Team Northeast, Team South- east, Team Northwest, Team Southwest, Team North and Team Great Plains. Add in Team Wisconsin and a team from the Faribault-based Shattuck-St. Mary’s school program, and the league has its eight teams that compete for eight consecutive weekends from September through GAME. October. League games are played mostly on Saturdays and Sundays, allowing players to continue to play football, soccer or other fall sports for their high schools.
