    Take Your Songwriting to the Next Level by Adding a Twist From surprise endings to modulations and double entendre, songs with twists can really pay-off. Posted in MusicWorld on October 14, 2016 by Jason Blume To grab our listeners’ attention we need to separate our songs from the competition, and one way to accomplish this is by including an unexpected twist—an element of surprise. This article examines various ways to incorporate twists into lyrics and melodies. Story Songs With Surprise Endings “Ol’ Red” (written by James Bohan, Don Goodman, and Mark Sherrill, and recorded by George Jones, Kenny Rogers, and Blake Shelton) is an exceptional example of a story song with a lyric that ends with a powerful punch. The lyric tells the story of a prisoner who, while serving a 99- year sentence for a crime of passion, takes care of a bloodhound named Ol’ Red. The narrator devises a plan to escape from prison that starts with having someone hide a female blue tick hound where the prisoner walks Ol’ Red each evening. After the bloodhound has grown to expect those nightly conjugal visits, the prisoner keeps the dogs apart for several days. The prisoner makes his escape, confident that Ol’ Red will lead the prison guards to his blue tick girlfriend—and not to the fugitive. For an added payoff, the song ends with the narrator saying that now, there are red-haired blue ticks all over the south, and that just as love got him into prison, love got him out. I write to you on behalf of my organization founded as Hillbilly Culture LLC in 2010 to support the efforts of Nashville Songwriters Association International (NSAI) to empower individual copyright creators to employ their works in a fair marketplace. Unfortunately, as the years have passed, the marketplace has become less and less of what songwriters would call “fair” and more and more about how loudly one can shout over the rest of the people shouting to be heard. A little background: I am daughter of Kim Williams, songwriter on over 140 million units sold (in the ‘90s mainly) with artists including Garth Brooks, Reba McEntire, George Strait and others. As a result of my father’s activities, our family moved from rural East Tennessee to Nashville for him to pursue his craft, and thankfully, as a result, he went on to write some of country music fans’ favorite songs including “Papa Loved Mama” and “Three Wooden Crosses.” Also as a result of his activities, I was able to attend one of the top private schools in the state and go on to earn a magna cum laude Bachelor of Music degree from Berklee College in Music Business/Management before returning to Nashville to pursue my own professional songwriting career in the early 2000s.

Thomerson BM, State University of New York at Fredonia, 2008 MM, University of Louisville, 2010 Committee Chair: bruce d. mcclung, PhD ABSTRACT Parody is the most commonly used structural borrowing technique in contemporary American vernacular music. This study investigates parody as a borrowing practice, as a type of humor, as an expression of ethnic identity, and as a response to intellectual trends during the final portion of the twentieth century. This interdisciplinary study blends musicology with humor studies, ethnic studies, and intellectual history, touching on issues ranging from reception history to musical meaning and cultural memory. As a structural borrowing technique, parody often creates incongruity—whether lyrical, stylistic, thematic, evocative, aesthetic, or functional—within a recognized musical style. Parodists combine these musical incongruities with other comic techniques and social conventions to create humor. Parodists also rely on pre-existing music to create, reinforce, and police ethnic boundaries, which function within a racialized discourse through which parodists often negotiate ethnic identities along a white-black binary. Despite parody’s ubiquity in vernacular music and notwithstanding the genre’s resonance with several key themes from the age of fracture, cultivated musicians have generally parody. The genre’s structural borrowing technique limited the identities musicians could perform through parodic borrowings. This study suggests several areas of musicological inquiry that could be enriched through engagement with parody, a genre that offers a vast and largely unexplored repertoire indicating how musical, racial, and cultural ideas can circulate in popular discourse.
