D10 life | THE STRAITS TIMES | MONDAY, JULY 13, 2015 | Tsai Chin, storyteller extraordinaire REVIEW/CONCERT CAI QIN SINGAPORE CONCERT 2015 AUSPICIOUS SIGNS TheStar Theatre, The Star Performing Arts Centre/ Last Saturday Theresa Tan Taiwanese evergreen singer Cai Qin, or Tsai Chin, to her English-speaking fans, is a stunner. She is not known for her looks, but for her sultry powerhouse vocals in a career spanning more than 30 years. She wowed the audience at her sold-out concert when she appeared slimmer, sharper and striking in a shimmery purple gown. The 57-year-old told the 5,000-strong audience: “I’m the real deal. My looks improve as I age.” She kicked off her performance with the concert’s upbeat theme song Auspicious Signs. And it was a sign of good things to come. For the 1 next 2 /2 hours, she teased and pleased the baby-boomer crowd. An old hand at entertaining, she did not just sing. She told stories of her life. She made you laugh. She got you to sing along. And she got you wanting more. Tsai dedicated her first segment to oldies such as Shen Mi Nu Lang (Mysterious Lady), Luo Hua Liu Shui (Falling Flower, Running Water) and Foolishly Waiting (Chi Chi De Deng). Her take on the melancholic Foolishly Waiting was hauntingly beautiful. She said the song, from the 1966 movie The Black And The Blue (Hei Yu Lan), was all the rage when she was a child and her parents used to take her and her three siblingsto watch live music performances.

Reviews for My Lifelong Challenge: Singapore’s Bilingual Journey Mr Wee Cho Yaw, chairman of the United Overseas Bank Group, who was Nanyang University Council chairman when Nantah was merged with the University of Singapore: “To many people of my generation Nantah is more than a university. It represented the aspirations and idealism of the South-east Asian Chinese. The Nantah ‘spirit’ of self- reliance and strength in unity cut across social classes and national borders. In the closing line of the Nantah chapter, Mr Lee Kuan Yew advised that the spirit which inspired it (the university) deserves to be treasured and embraced by future generations of Singaporeans. I totally agree.” Mr Chua Thian Poh, president of the Singapore Federation of Chinese Clan Associations: “This is a good book that deserves to be read by every Singaporean, particularly parents who are still undecided over how to create a positive second- language learning environment for their children.” Ms Stefanie Sun, Mandopop singer who had to brush up on her Mandarin to break into the Taiwan pop music market: “As the world gets ‘smaller’, our red dot fights for its mark on the global community. If you ever wondered how we got this far or what makes Singaporeans tick, this book explains a lot through the eyes of Mr Lee Kuan Yew.” Professor Eddie Kuo Chen-Yu, Emeritus Professor, Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information, Nanyang Technological University: “Mr Lee’s… recounting of his family background and his life experiences in learning several languages makes this book a fascinating read.” Dr Henry Kissinger, former US secretary of state, who is an old friend of Mr Lee’s: “Lee Kuan Yew’s memoir of his journey toward recognition of the value of state-supported bilingualism for his polyglot nation is a fascinating chapter in the life and lessons of one of the most innovative and successful leaders of our time.

Stefanie Sun: Singapore’s pop sensation Written by Jaime Koh on 10 February 2014 When Stefanie Sun Yanzi (孙燕姿) burst onto the music scene in 2000, she took the Chinese pop music markets in Singapore and Taiwan by storm. Within a year, she chalked up impressive record sales and swept about a dozen Best Newcomer Awards at various music award shows. Despite periodic absences from the music scene, Sun continues to be one of Singapore’s most popular singers. Early years Stefanie Sun Yan Zi (孙燕姿) is a Singaporean singer. Born to an engineering lecturer father and teacher mother, Sun has two sisters. 1 She attended St Andrew’s Junior College and the Nanyang Technological University, majoring in marketing.2 3 Sun started her musical education young. She started learning the piano when she was five years old.4 She also loved to sing. "I was always singing. I remember my primary school classmates used to get very irritated and say, “Can you stop it?” she recalled.5 At 19, Sun enrolled in the Lee Wei Song School of Music. 6 Although Sun was interested in singing, she had not enrolled for the course with the thought of becoming a professional singer.7 Nevertheless Sun’s vocal quality stood out and attracted the attention of her music teacher Paul Li Wei Song. “Her voice has a very unique quality that's not found in anyone else," he said.8 Sun was then selected to go to the Artiste and Repertoire class where the most promising young singers were placed.9 Subsequently, Li recorded a demo tape for Sun and sent it to record companies.
