Agency and Subversion of Genre in Diana Wynne Jones’S BETTER AND HAPPIER AND FREER THAN BEFORE1: AGENCY AND SUBVERSION OF GENRE IN DIANA WYNNE JONES’S HOWL’S MOVING CASTLE, CASTLE IN THE AIR, AND HOUSE OF MANY WAYS by Janet Elizabeth Robbins Eastwood B.A., Kwantlen Polytechnic University, 2012 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS in THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE AND POSTDOCTORAL STUDIES (Children’s Literature) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) September 2014 © Janet Elizabeth Robbins Eastwood, 2014 Abstract This thesis examines the ways in which Diana Wynne Jones’s Howl’s Moving Castle, Castle in the Air, and House of Many Ways challenge and subvert the genres of fairy tale, Arabian Nights romance, and Victorian sensibility, respectively, and the ways in which the protagonist of each tale defies the constraints imposed by family and her or his own internal narrative to gain self-knowledge and agency. Jones’s protagonists, Sophie, Abdullah, and Charmain, are initially stifled by cultural and familial expectations and by their own internalization of these norms. It is not until they are forced into circumstances far different from those they are used to that Sophie, Abdullah, and Charmain begin to question their beliefs about their own potential and about the world around them. During their adventures, they apply pre- existing skills and gain new practical abilities and knowledge, developing a stronger sense of identity, a surer command of language, and the ability to perceive truth amid pretense. Sophie, Abdullah, and Charmain subvert their own expectations and genres to gain agency. Jones uses wordplay and humour throughout her protagonists’ journeys, and visually represents magic, creativity, and freedom through the use of colour, particularly blue and multi-coloured objects, I love you. vi Chapter 1: Introduction Introduction My parents, both keen readers, read stories to me before I was old enough to understand the concept of a book. I became a reader: to me it was perfectly normal to be so intent upon a narrative that I did not hear the call to come for dinner, to have character and plot details memorized to the nth degree, to enjoy reciting to myself (and anyone else who would listen) poems and songs and paragraphs from the stories I liked best. The books I read were of a wide variety, from puzzle picturebooks to fairy tales to survival stories to quest narratives such as Brian Jacques’ Redwall saga. I devoured stories set in modern North America, tales set in all regions of the globe, books about the past. I was introduced to J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit because my Dad waved it in front of me and refused to tell me what a hobbit was. I reread my Mum’s much-loved copy of Pride and Prejudice until I learned to appreciate Jane Austen’s humour. Anything that any of my family had borrowed from the library and left in our enormous Library Book Box was fair game. As I grew older and my friends either ceased reading for pleasure, or moved on from children’s literature, I found that I was unwilling to abandon children’s books and fairy tales. It was slightly embarrassing, perhaps, but I preferred children’s books to the kinds of books I felt vaguely that I was supposed to move on to. The children’s books didn’t all have happy endings – some of them itched at me in the same dissatisfying way that certain

Tolkien On Fairy-stories This essay was originally intended to be one of the Andrew Lang lectures at St. Andrews, and it was, in abbreviated form, delivered there in 1938. To be invited to lecture in St. Andrews is a high compliment to any man; to be allowed to speak about fairy-stories is (for an Englishman in Scotland) a perilous honor. I felt like a conjuror who finds himself, by mistake, called upon to give a display of magic before the court of an elf-king. After producing his rabbit, such a clumsy performer may consider himself lucky, if he is allowed to go home in proper shape, or indeed to go home at all. There are dungeons in fairyland for the overbold. And overbold I fear I may be accounted, because I am a reader and lover of fairy-stories, but not a student of them, as Andrew Lang was. I have not the learning, nor the still more necessary wisdom, which the subject demands. The land of fairy-story is wide and deep and high, and is filled with many things: all manner of beasts and birds are found there; shoreless seas and stars uncounted; beauty that is an enchantment, and an ever-present peril; both sorrow and joy as sharp as swords. In that land a man may (perhaps) count himself fortunate to have wandered, but its very riches and strangeness make dumb the traveller who would report it. And while he is there it is dangerous for him to ask too many questions, lest the gates shut and the keys be lost.

    Augusto Castanho !1 Abstract: The Current Decline of Folklore in Brazil explores the gradual disappearing of the Brazilian folklore and highlights its historical factors by creating a timeline on how the issue has grown, in order to develop an approach on how we can revive the folkloric culture in Brazil. Folktales and myths are passed down from generation to generation for the same reason: they teach us basic life lessons we will never forget. They are timeless examples and constant reminders of what is important or not, of what is wrong and what is right. However, these folktales and myths are no longer a strong pilar holding the 21st century generation. This research allows you to visualise the real scope of the problem generated by the lack of interest from people towards the Brazilian folklore. However, as most of the answers to this lack of concern are related to the media and technology we must understand that these powerful tools are meant to be used in our favour. Tales pass on key cultural and social histories all in a metaphoric language. In this course, we will examine a variety of classical and contemporary fairy and folktale texts from German and other European cultures, learn about approaches to folklore materials and fairy tale texts, and look at our own culture with a critical-historical perspective. We will highlight key issues, values, and anxieties of European (and U.S.) culture as they evolve from 1400 to the present. These aspects of human life include arranged marriage, infanticide, incest, economic struggles, boundaries between the animal and human, gender roles, and class antagonisms. Among the tales we will read and learn to analyze using various interpretive methods are tales collected by the Brothers Grimm, by the Italians Basile and Straparola, by seventeenth- and eighteenth-century French writers such as D‘Aulnoy, de Beaumont, and Perrault, by Hans Christian Andersen and Oscar Wilde. Grimms’ interest in publishing fairy tales came from their desire to pass down oral traditions of German story telling but in written form.     Peterson Fat Fairies 1 Fat Fairies: Stereotype, Body Type, and Personality of TV Godmothers (Presented at UC Berkeley’s Western States Folklore Conference on April 8, 2016) Before getting to her magical work, Cinderella’s 1950 Disney godmother rolls up her sleeves and realizes that she seems to have misplaced her wand. She bumbles about, looks under the garden bench, shakes out her dress before announcing, “Oh! I forgot: I put it away!” Busy godmothers can forget things, but this fairy’s absent mindedness doesn’t end there. Moments later this pudgy Disney godmother nods her head approvingly to send Cinderella off to the ball still dressed in her rags before realizing, “Good heavens, child! You can’t go to the ball in that!” Thus our round friend is a little absent-minded at times, but she leaves us with an iconic image of fairy godmothers: that they are chubby and therefore cheery. Fast forward now to 2015 and let’s watch this same scene. For actress Helena Bonham Carter Disney got rid of the rounded body type (though, not necessarily the round dress). But Carter’s godmother takes her pumpkin into the greenhouse to turn it into a coach—and nearly misses getting squashed by the pumpkin’s enlargement. Yes, Disney got rid of the round body from 1950, but what did that leave them with? The ditzy godmother who cannot think through her own magical spells. I wondered if these large and airheaded, chubby and cheery godmothers were just a Disney-sponsored formula. But they weren’t. From 1950-2016, animation to live-action, Disney to non-Disney, my research finds that most fairy godmothers across the film industry and on TV are either fat or foolish—and they are usually a combination of both.

I say unfortunately because some of the ideas are great. I can't talk about all of them, since piecing them together is a substantial part of the plot and probably the best part of the book, but there's ancient powerful machinery, a fair bit of fiddling about with time (time travel just isn't the right term), some nice non-linear exposition, a galaxy-spanning empire secretly well-established on Earth, some truly nice mind-link telepathy, and a really fun take on magic. On top of that, though, there's also a bit of an Arthurian, some badly done political intrigue and infighting, dragons, badly handled mind control, angst about a dark past, mythical nature, and robots. You may be seeing what I mean about too many ideas. There's something of an overall structure that allows one to sensibly mash all of this stuff together, but it still feels like a disjointed hodge-podge. Worse, though, is that due to the machine-gun speed at which ideas, plot elements, and bits of background are introduced, the really good ones don't get explored. One is left with an extensive list of things in the "this could have been cool if anything had really been done with it" category. I wish some of this could have been spread out across two or three completely different books so that I could have enjoyed a fully-fleshed version.
