SUMMER FESTIVAL ILLSLEY BALL NORDSTROM RECITAL HALL AT BENAROYA HALL

JAMES EHNES JULY 7 – AUGUST 2, 2014 Artistic Director world class music in the heart of the city

world class music in the heart of the city DEAR FRIENDS// Welcome

We have a tremendous 2014 Summer Festival in store, with world- class artists and masterpieces both familiar and rare.

We will be performing Stravinsky’s revolutionary masterpiece The Soldier’s Tale in its entirety on July 11th, an event not to be missed. Our mini vocal festival July 18-23 will offer beloved works such as Brahms’ charming Liebeslieder Waltzes and Vaughan Williams’ poignant On Wenlock Edge.

This is our eighth season that the Commissioning Club has brought a brand new piece to life. This year we’re thrilled to present the premiere, on July 14, of a piano trio by one of America’s most accomplished young composers, Derek Bermel.

Other highlights include Schubert’s Octet, both of Mendelssohn’s glorious Piano Trios, two Brahms Piano Quartets, and Tchaikovsky’s epic Piano Trio.

We look forward to seeing you at Nordstrom Recital Hall in July for another summer of glorious music!

JAMES EHNES

I’m very much looking forward to playing the Vaughan Trio for Strings in G minor Williams Quintet (July 16). It’s one of the few pieces Stephen Rose, Jonathan Vinocour, Ronald Thomas that I’ve actually recommended to the festival, and I’m so happy that James has programmed it! It’s an early work of Vaughan Williams’ in which he hasn’t RALPH VAUGHAN WILLIAMS quite established his own characteristic style, but the Quintet in D Major work is brilliantly crafted and full of energy and great Derek Bermel, Jeffrey Fair, Amy Schwartz Moretti, melodies. Bion Tsang, Anna Polonsky

You’re taking part in the premiere of Derek Bermel’s JOHANNES BRAHMS Piano Trio (July 14). What is it like to prepare a brand Quartet for Piano and Strings in C minor, Op. 60 new piece? Martin Beaver, Cynthia Phelps, Amit Peled, Working with the unknown is always challenging and Orion Weiss exciting! No matter how much time I spend studying the cello part and complete score, a new piece always feels foreign to me until I actually get the chance to read it through with the other musicians. At the same time, taking part in a world premiere typically “It’s almost miraculous to achieve this... means getting to work with the composer, which I find with...musicians who don’t regularly illuminating.
