40th ANNUAL GLOBAL SYMPOSIUM ON RACING & GAMING WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 11, 2013 Muckraking Journalism as a Positive Force – The Second Annual Presentation of the Stan Bergstein Writing Award MODERATOR: Jeff Lowe, Media, Team Valor SPEAKERS: Barry Irwin, President, Team Valor Ray Paulick, Publisher, Paulick Report Mr. Doug Reed: I imagine a few people are still at lunch or I understand it warmed up a little bit outside and that may tempt some of the golfers. As usual I’m sure people will drift in, but we’re gonna go ahead and get started and I’ll do my usual thank you to the sponsors. The beverage break following this is sponsored by Del Mar Thoroughbred Club. We have a unique event that just occurred, the mentor lunch, where students get to choose a mentor in the industry and have lunch while they’re here. That’s sponsored by the American Quarter Horse Association and the Jockey Club. That’s a special event for the students. Many of you that have been coming here for years know how involved Stan Bergstein was with our program. I’m very honored that this next session here is taking place here at the symposium. This is the second annual presentation of the Stan Bergstein Writing Award. I think that’s very fitting and I know Stan’s somewhere there and hopefully watching and appreciating. I’d like to introduce the moderator of this session, Jeff Lowe is the media guy for Team Valor International. He joined Team Valor in 2011 after a nine year stint, excuse me, with the Thoroughbred Times.

Alphabet Soup Fraise Amazombie Gulch Black Tie Affair Little Mike Cajun Beat Precisionist Eldaafer Prized 1996 Breeders’’ Cup Classic Winner AAllpphhaabbeett SSoouupp OFFICIAL 2016 OLD FRIENDS BREEDERS’ CUP PROGRAM Welcome In 1984, under a sunnier sky than anything the Beach Boys ever evoked, I was at Hollywood Park waiting for the gates to spring open revealing the greatest idea in the history of horse racing —the Breeders' Cup. For the uninitiated, the Breeders' Cup is like the World Series, NHL and NBA all in one day. And you might as well toss in the Super Bowl. Over the years, I've attended a dozen Breeders' Cups. I saw Precisionist win the 1985 Sprint at Aqueduct, and Fraise nip Sky Classic in the 1992 Turf at Gulfstream Park, and Black Tie Af fair’s dominating victory in the 1991 Classic at Churchill Downs. Now, they are all buried at Old Friends. And, while their exhilarating athleticism in front of a grandstand exploding with screaming fans still gets my heart pumping, it's their last days, with just a handful of us, that I remember the most. They all showed the same intelligence, grace and courage at the end as they did at the beginning. As we await the 33rd running of the Breeders' Cup at Santa Anita, I can walk around the farm and feed carrots to Classic winner Alphabet Soup (1996), Turf winner Little Mike (2012), Sprint winner Amazombie (2011), Marathoner Eldaafer (2010), and dozens of others who participated, including Silver Charm, Hidden Lake, Affirmed Success, Tinners Way, Touch Gold, and Game on Dude.

The veteran trainer is consistently potent with claiming types and can get the right horse ready to win first out of the box. On the national scene, his name is much less recognizable, but that changed this year at Saratoga, when he had the distinction of being leading trainer after day one of the elite meet. He=ll look to build on that honor when he starts two juvenile fillies in Sunday=s GII Adirondack S. at the Spa, an opportunity he carved out by going back to what paid the bills when he first started training nearly 40 years ago.
