Silencing the Sirens: Patronage and the New World in Spenser, Daniel, and Shakespeare A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA BY John Christian Sievers IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Professor John Watkins, Advisor October 2011 © John Christian Sievers 2011 Acknowledgements This dissertation owes its existence to a steady stream of people in my life who have encouraged me to read and to think carefully about what I read. It started with my parents Dennis and Celeste, and continued through important High School teachers like Mr. Handlen, and life-changing undergraduate professors like Dr. Jesse Swan. It culminated with the insights and invaluable support of my dissertation committee: John Watkins, Shirley Nelson Garner, Gordon Hirsch, and Kelley Harness. Thanks for your guidance in my life and the part you played in helping me complete this project. As I have worked on this dissertation, I have become the proud father of two lovely daughters, Eleanor and Abigail. Even as they have learned their first words, they‘ve helped me think about sirens, or as Eleanor prefers mermaids, in new ways. Thank you Eleanor and Abigail for making the best of the times that I couldn‘t take you to the park, play dress up, or eat your imaginary culinary delights. For her encouragement, her patience, and her unwavering faith in me, I thank my wife, Beth. Though certainly not a siren, you are, after all, the only temptation I shall ever pursue. i Dedication To Beth, Eleanor, and Abigail: the inspirations for my songs.

  • Bermuda Tobacco Seed to Virginia from Bermuda on the Two Ships They Built, the Deliverance and Patience, in May 1610?
Tobacco: The Intriguing Story of Bermuda and Virginia Tobacco (nicotiana tobaccum) most certainly originated in central and south Americas and the Caribbean. Christopher Columbus in 1492 sailed into Cuba’s Haia de Gibara looking for gold but found Indians who “smoked like chimneys”. Rodrigo de Jerez who was with Columbus was the first European to smoke a role of tobacco from a cornhusk pipe. Upon his return to Spain he was jailed for smoking as it was considered sinful, but smoking became popular in Spain within a few years as it did elsewhere. Britain occupied Cuba in 1763 and began importing Cuban Cigars to Europe. Today “Havana cigars” are still reputed to be the best in the World. Another famous name associated with tobacco is Sir Walter Raleigh who established the “lost colony” at Roanoke Island in Virginia in 1585. It was here that he first experienced tobacco. Sir Thomas Harriot, a historian, accompanied him to Roanoke a year later and wrote about the strange weed in his “Brief and True Report of the New Found Land of Virginia”. The Indians claimed that tobacco “opened their pores” and had curative powers. The Indians called it “Uppowoc”; “tobacco” is the Spanish word for the plant. Raleigh introduced tobacco to England and Europe. In 1605 King James who considered tobacco as “loathsome to the eye, hateful to the nose, and harmful to the brain” levied a huge tax (4000%) on its importation to discourage its use. Notwithstanding this initial resistance tobacco became very popular in Europe and a few years later the exportation of it from Virginia to Europe saved (financially) the colony at Jamestown.

  • Virginia Vetusta, During the Reign of James the First
    > ', I' Virginia Vetusta, DURING THE REIGN OF JAMES THE FIRST. CONTAINING Letters and Documents never before Printed. A SUPPLEMENT TO THE HISTORY OF THE VIRGINIA COMPANY. EDWARD D. NEILL. NEC FALSA DICERE, NEC VERA RETICERE. ALBANY, N. T.: JOEL MUNSELL'S SONS, 82 STATE ST. 6 i' 7 1 915.17 PREFACE. N the belief, that there was need of such a contribution, to the documen- tary history, of the early colonial period of Virginia, this work has been prepared. It is intended to supple- ment the History of the Virginia Corn- pan ij of London, which was published several years ago, and has proved of some value to the students of American history. It is quite remarkable, that for two centuries, historical writers chiefly depended upon a book compiled by an adventurer, for a knowledge of the early English coloniza- tion in North America. The once Deputy Governor of Virginia, George Percy, in a letter, to his brother Henry the 9th Earl of Northumberland, refers to a publication, " wherein the author hath not spared to appropriate many deserts to himself, which he never performed, and stuffed his relations with so many falsities, and malicious detrac- tions." As yet no document of the period of James the First, has been discovered, which tells where the church was situated, m which John Rolfe was married to Pocahontas, and the name of the officiating clergyman. There is iv PREFACE. evidence however, that Rolfe, in 1609, left England with a white wife, and that she gave birth to a daughter at Bermudas, who soon died.

  • Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Water Trail Statement of National Significance
CAPTAIN JOHN SMITH CHESAPEAKE NATIONAL HISTORIC WATER TRAIL STATEMENT OF NATIONAL SIGNIFICANCE John S. Salmon, Project Historian 1. Introduction and Findings This report evaluates the national significance of the trail known as the Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Water Trail, which incorporates those parts of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries that Smith explored primarily on two voyages in 1608. The study area includes parts of four states—Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and Pennsylvania—and the District of Columbia. Two bills introduced in the United States Congress (entitled the Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Watertrail Study Act of 2005) authorized the Secretary of the Interior to “carry out a study of the feasibility of designating the Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Watertrail as a national historic trail.” Senator Paul S. Sarbanes (Maryland) introduced S.B. 336 on February 9, 2005, and Senators George Allen (Virginia), Joseph R. Biden, Jr. (Delaware), Barbara A. Mikulski (Maryland), and John Warner (Virginia) cosponsored it. The bill was referred to the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources Subcommittee on National Parks on April 28. On May 24, 2005, Representative Jo Ann Davis (Virginia) introduced H.R. 2588 in the House of Representatives, and 19 other Representatives from the four relevant states signed on as cosponsors. The bill, which is identical to Senate Bill 336, was referred to the House Committee on Resources on May 24, and to the Subcommittee on National Parks on May 31. On August 2, 2005, President George W. Bush authorized the National Park Service to study the feasibility of establishing the Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Water Trail as part of the FY 2006 Interior, Environment and Related Agencies Appropriations Act.

  • History of the Somers Room
History of The Somers Room ADMIRAL SIR GEORGE SOMERS, 1554 – 1610 George Somers was born in 1554 in a house in Broad Street, Lyme Regis. He was the fourth of five sons and it was because of him that Bermuda’s history and the colonisation of Virginia, USA began. Walter Raleigh was a neighbour and boyhood friend and like Raleigh, he had courage and daring and he was known to be “an adventurer and risk taker at heart.” As Lyme Regis was conveniently situated for trade with France and Spain, together with a unique artificial breakwater called The Cobb, Somers soon became a competent mariner. He first went to sea as a boy in the early 1560’s and in 1588 Somers co-ordinated Lyme Regis’ defences against the Spanish Armada as it approached the English Coast. He sent out three ships to join the sea battle that raged off the coast and later joined Sir Francis Drake on some of his voyages. He used his share of the £8,000 prize money, from pillaging the Spanish in the Caribbean, to buy Weybay House near Weymouth. In 1600 he left privateering and joined the Royal Navy and became a naval associate with Sir Walter Raleigh (he didn’t upset Queen Elizabeth l like Raleigh did!!). In 1603 he was knighted and became a Member of Parliament for Lyme Regis, later becoming its Mayor in 1604. He and his wife, Joan, were unable to have children but settled happily at Berne Farm near the village of Whitchurch Canicorum. He bought this, together with a 200 acre estate and Orchard House, a 100 acre farm, for £600.
