A year beyond words Annual Report 2018 humanities.org Letter from the CEO Dear friends, I usually begin letters to our supporters by examining our polarized political climate, or our society’s need for connection, or the impact of one of our events. But for this one I will be blunt: 2018 was one of the best years in Humanities Washington’s history. We held more Speakers Bureau events than at any time since the program began. Think and Drink attendance was the highest it’s ever been. We launched the Center for Washington Cultural traditions with ArtsWA, and hosted events with New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof, renowned historian Doris Kearns Goodwin, and NPR journalist Joshua Johnson. It’s clear that there is a hunger for Humanities Washington’s programming—for gathering together face-to-face to understand our world and each other. For seeing the human being behind the opinion, the fact, or the news story. The phrase “we couldn’t do this without your support” is such a common one as to be numbing, but it bears reflecting on: all of you, from donors to trustees to event attendees, together built something meaningful last year. Humanities Washington is a small organization covering a large state with a giant mandate: to bridge the divides that separate us. Our staff of nine relies on your generosity like few others. Though we are an organization that loves language, 2018 left us speechless. Thank you for making it a year beyond words. My family members in attendance shared a dinner following it, and continued to talk about it all, and shared again with other family members the next day. For us, the presentation had a certain balming affect – to be able to talk about politics and society without the heated exchange.” — Speakers Bureau attendee, Lakewood Humanities Washington is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit Financials organization in Washington State. 2018 Total Expenses: SUPPORTERS $1,500,256 Organizations Amazon Literary Partnership Columbia Basin College Community Colleges of Spokane Discuren Foundation rograms Federation of State Humanities Councils Fordham Street Foundation Friends of Steilacoom Library 78% $203,520 Friends of the Library of Walla Walla $1,170,763 unraising Gonzaga University Hyatt Centric –Times Square New York 14% Kenneth and Marleen Alhadeff Charitable Foundation $125,973 Marrella Fund ministratie National Endowment for the Humanities Norcliffe Foundation 8% Norman Raab Foundation Office of the Secretary of State Safeco Insurance Speakers Bureau event with Daudi Abe at Central Washington University.
