WHELAN Crashing Through Fences Don’t Break My Sky* *denotes world premieres ABOUT THE MUSIC Pianist Sonya Lifschitz, flautist Lina Andonovska and their guests come together to create a tour de force in the interpretation of contemporary chamber music by some of today’s most innovative, exciting, and imaginative musical voices. They have performed to capacity audiences around Australia, have been featured as part of the New Music Network’s Mini-Series, on Radio National’s Music Show and 3MBS radio, and have had several new works written and dedicated to them. In 2015, season highlights included debuts at Melbourne Recital Centre, the Melbourne Festival, Port Fairy Festival, and were awarded the Contemporary Masters Award for the premiere of Sitsky’s Sandakan Trio. Quickly gaining recognition internationally as a fearless and versatile artist, flautist Lina Andonovska has collaborated and performed with eighth blackbird, Crash Ensemble, stargaze, Donnacha Dennehy, Sam Amidon, Shara Worden (My Brightest Diamond), Bryce and Aaron Dessner (The National), Richard Reed Parry (Arcade Fire) and the Australian Chamber Orchestra. As an orchestral player, Lina has performed with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, was co-principal flute of the Southbank Sinfonia (UK) and has performed concerti with the Southbank Sinfonia, Orchestra Victoria and the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra. She was awarded the prestigious Freedman Fellowship in 2013. Praised by the New York Times and The Age for her “dynamic” and “powerful” performances, Ukrainian-born pianist Sonya Lifschitz is internationally recognised as one of Australia’s most innovative and creative musical Continued over page... performers. In 2015, Sonya made her critically acclaimed solo debut in New York’s Bargemusic series, with other season highlights including performances at the Banff Centre (Canada), Melbourne Recital Centre’s Local Heroes and Spotlight series, Melbourne, Darwin and Port Fairy Festivals, 3MBS Marathon, Queensland Conservatorium of Music, and a collaboration between visual artist Angela Cavalieri, iconic Melbourne arts venue fortyfivedownstairs, and Sonya’s contemporary ensemble Press, Play, of which she is the co-founder and artistic co-director. Kaylie Melville is a Melbourne-based percussionist whose diverse practice includes solo and chamber performance, new music collaborations and education. Kaylie has worked with many of Australia’s leading ensembles and orchestras and performed at festivals including the Metropolis New Music Festival, Melbourne Festival, Bendigo International Festival of Exploratory Music, the Adelaide Cabaret Festival, the Salihara Festival (Indonesia) and the Percussive Arts Society’s International Conventional (US). Sean M. Whelan is a poet and playwright. He has published two books of poetry, Love is the New Hate and Tattooing the Surface of the Moon. His first playEverything: All The Time enjoyed a sold out season at the 2013 Melbourne Fringe Festival. He also works extensively with musicians, most notably Isnod and The Interim Lovers. He has performed his work widely both nationally and overseas in the USA, Canada, Indonesia and New Zealand. In 2014 he was awarded a Creative Fellowship at the State Library of Victoria. He is currently working on a new collection of poetry and new recordings.
