European Red List of Habitats - Screes Habitat Group H3.3 Macaronesian inland cliff Summary The perennial vegetation of crevices and ledges of cliff faces in Macaronesia away from coastal salt-spray is of very diverse character - some, for example, dominated by succulents, others rich in ferns and bryophytes characteristic of shaded situations - and it includes several hundreds of taxa endemic to the archipelagoes. The main threats are mountaineering and rock climbing, outdoor sports and leisure activities, and construction of infrastructures such as roads and motorways. Synthesis There is no evidence of significant past reductions, either in the last 50 years or historically, and also future prospects are good, as no serious threats are envisaged, besides touristic/leisure activities and putative faulty environmental impact assessments that may overlook this habitat as valuable. Reduction in quantity, reduction in quality and criteria of geographic distribution yield the Least Concern (LC) category. In spite of the LC category, conservation policy and management should restrict to the maximum any threat to or reduction of the habitat, as it has a very high conservation value, because of high endemism of species and communities with many local and regional variaties. Tis report reviews the European, National, and Regional catalogues of protected species, focusing specifcally on the Orchidaceae family to determine which species seem to be well-protected and where they are protected. Moreover, this examination highlights which species appear to be underprotected and therefore need to be included in some catalogues of protection or be catalogued under some category of protection. Te national and regional catalogues that should be implemented are shown, as well as what species should be included within them. Tis report should be a helpful guideline for environmental policies about orchids conservation in Spain, at least at the regional and national level. Around 76% of the Spanish orchid fora are listed with any fgure of protection or included in any red list, either nationally (about 12-17%) or regionally (72%). -

COSTA Geomagnetism group, Department of Geology, University of Neuchâtel CP 158, 2009 Neuchâtel, Switzerland *corresponding author E-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT External eastern areas of the Las Cañadas caldera (LCC) of Tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain) have been investigated using the audiomagnetotelluric (AMT) method with the aim to characterize the physical rock properties at shallow depth and the thickness of a first resistive layer. Using the results of 50 AMT tensors carried out in the period range of 0.001 s to 0.3 s, this study provides six unpublished AMT profiles distributed in the upper Orotava valley and data from the Pedro Gil caldera (Dorsal Ridge). Showing obvious 1-D behaviour, soundings have been processed through 1-D modeling and gathered to form profiles. Underlying a resistive cover (150-2000 Ωm), a conductive layer at shallow depth (18-140 Ωm, 250-1100 m b.g.l.) which is characterized by a “wavy-like” structure, often parallel to the topography, appears in all profiles. This paper points out the ubiquitous existence in Tenerife of such a conductive layer, which is the consequence of two different processes: a) according to geological data, the enhanced conductivity of the flanks is interpreted as a plastic breccia within a clayish matrix generated during huge lateral collapse; and b) along main tectonic structures and inside calderas, this layer is formed by hydrothermal alteration processes. -

INTRODUCTION The landscape and nature of the Canary Islands stand out on the world map for their diversity and originality. This fragmented insular space combines a variety of geographical factors, namely volcanism and its subtropical location, resulting in many diverse landscapes all within a small area (7,493 km2). Romanticism, a cultural movement that inspired the beginning of leisure travel to the Canary Islands, took traveling beyond the strictly European borders and brought it to more exotic and distant destinations, which, in the late nineteenth century, began to place this archipelago northwest of the African continent in the limelight. The objective of the paper presented is twofold. On the one hand, our objective is to explore the tourist interest in the landscape of the Canary Islands, and especially by the predominantly natural physiognomy, among Europeans, particularly among the British in the late nineteenth century. And secondly, once this first objective has been fulfilled, we will demonstrate that one of the main centres of attraction in this sense was the exceptional scenery associated with the stunning Teide stratovolcano. To accomplish this dual objective, it was first essential to make a brief analysis of the European culture of British high society that inspired leisure travel and spending free time in nature and the countryside during that era, and then analyse the stories of travellers who were drawn to visit the islands due to the landscape and who played an important role in the tourism industry taking off during those years. -

Die Abgrenzung von Gattungen oder anderen höheren Taxa erfolgt nach modernen Ansätzen weitestgehend auf der Rekonstruktion der Stammesgeschichte (Stamm- baum-Theorie), mit Hilfe von großen Daten-Matrizen. Wenngleich aufgrund des Fortschritts in der DNS-Sequenzierungstechnik immer mehr Merkmale in der DNS identiiziert werden, ist es mindestens genauso wichtig, die Anzahl der analysierten Planzen zu erhöhen, um genaue Zuordnungen zu erschließen. Die größere Vielfalt mathematischer Methoden zur Erstellung von Stammbäumen führt nicht gleichzeitig zu verbesserten Methoden zur Beurteilung der Stabilität der Zweige innerhalb der Stammbäume. Ein weiterer kontraproduktiver Trend ist die wachsende Tendenz, diverse Datengruppen mit einzelnen Matrizen zu verquicken, die besser einzeln analysiert würden, um festzustellen, ob sie ähnliche Schlussfolgerungen bezüglich der Verwandtschaftsverhältnisse liefern. The Canary Islands Dragon Trees & Blue Chaffinches A Greentours Tour Report 7th – 16th February 2014 Leader Başak Gardner Day 1 07.02.2014 To El Patio via Guia de Isora I met the half of the group at the airport just before midday and headed towards El Guincho where our lovely hotel located. We took the semi coastal road up seeing the xerophytic scrub gradually changing to thermophile woodland and then turned towards El Teide mountain into evergreen tree zone where the main tree was Pinus canariensis. Finally found a suitable place to stop and then walked into forest to see our rare orchid, Himantoglossum metlesicsiana. There it was standing on its own in perfect condition. We took as many pics as possible and had our picnic there as well. We returned to the main road and not long after we stopped by the road side spotting several flowering Aeonium holochrysum. It was a very good stop to have a feeling of typical Canary Islands flora. We encountered plants like Euphorbia broussonetii and canariensis, Kleinia neriifolia, Argyranthemum gracile, Aeonium urbicum, Lavandula canariensis, Sonchus canariensis, Rumex lunaria and Rubia fruticosa. Driving through the windy roads we finally came to Icod De Los Vinos to see the oldest Dragon Tree. They made a little garden of native plants with some labels on and the huge old Dragon Tree in the middle. After spending some time looking at the plants that we will see in natural habitats in the following days we drove to our hotel only five minutes away. The hotel has an impressive drive that you can see the huge area of banana plantations around it. -

This is probably the most well known location on Tenerife as it is where most people see their first Blue Chaffinches and we were not to be disappointed. Also at this location we saw the only Great Spotted Woodpecker of the tour plus a few Canaries, a Tenerife Kinglet and a few African Blue Tits. After departing from Las Lajas we continued climbing and entered the Las Cañadas National Park which is a spectacular drive through volcanic scenery. On the drive we encountered quite a few endemic plants including Pinus canariensis and Spartocytisus supranubius that were common and easily recognized and Echium wildpretii, Pterocephalus lasiospermus, Descurainia bourgaeana and Argyranthemum teneriffae which were rather unimpressive as they were not yet flowering but we were compensated by the fabulous views across the ancient caldera. -

Thanks to the isolation of many islands, they exhibit special patterns of biodiversity, such as lower species diversity, high endemism and disharmony. Important processes in the assembly of these communities are immigration, extinction (increasingly through human agency), and adaptive radiation.
