Results Evolutionary distinctiveness differed according to the phylogeny used, and conservation assessment ranks varied according to the chosen proxy of extinction risk. Two of the three main areas of high phylogenetic diversity were coincident with areas of high species richness. A third area was identified only by one phylogeny and was not a richness hotspot. Faunal assemblages identified by level of endemism, habitat loss, biome type or the presence in biodiversity hotspots captured phylogenetic diversity levels no better than random assem- blages. -

A fauna de serpentes do Estado de Santa Catarina é a menos estudada do Sul do Brasil, não havendo estudos abordando serpentes atropeladas. Neste trabalho apresentamos dados sobre serpentes encontradas mortas em diversas estradas do Estado entre os anos de 2003 e 2008. Foram registrados 165 exemplares pertencentes a 38 espécies que correspondem a 50% das serpentes com ocorrência esperada para o Estado de Santa Catarina. As quatro espécies mais freqüentes foram Philodryas patagoniensis (N= 22; 13,33%), Liophis miliaris (n = 21; 12,72%), P. aestiva (n = 13; 7,87%) e Bothrops jararaca (n = 12; 7,27%), que somadas representam cerca de 41% das serpentes encontradas mortas. Abstract: Bothropic envenomation induces hemorrhage, coagulant disturbances and necrosis. Regarding therapies against the local damage caused by the venom, there is little information on tissue changes until the complete healing. In the current study, local damage was evaluated by examination of morphological inflammatory alterations, mast cell count, and analysis of collagen deposition. Bleeding was evident four hours after inoculation. After 24 hours, a large area of injury appeared presenting disorganized tissue, significant hemorrhage and acute inflammation. After three days, the damaged area was extensive, with a large amount of inflammatory cells and the presence of scab. In seven days, healing and reepithelization process started. And, 21 days later, the epithelium showed less infiltration and no skin appendages. The number of mast cells was similar to control after four hours, with a drop of 50% at 24 hours, followed by an increase until the 21st day. No differences of collagen deposition were observed among experimental groups. Taken together, wound healing after intradermal injection of Bothrops cotiara venom in mice follows similar parameters to wounds caused by other bothropic venoms. -

Abstract: Envenomations caused by different species ofBothrops snakes result in severe local tissue damage, hemorrhage, pain, myonecrosis, and inflammation with a significant leukocyte accumulation at the bite site. However, the activation state of leukocytes is still unclear. According to clinical cases and experimental work, the local effects observed in envenenomation by Bothrops alternatus are mainly the appearance of edema, hemorrhage, and necrosis. In this study we investigated the ability of Bothrops alternatus crude venom to induce macrophage activation. At 6 to 100 μg/mL, BaV is not toxic to thioglycollate-elicited macrophages; at 3 and 6 μg/mL, it did not interfere in macrophage adhesion or detachment. Moreover, at concentrations of 1.5, 3, and 6 μg/mL the venom induced an increase in phagocytosis via complement receptor one hour after incubation. Pharmacological treatment of thioglycollate-elicited macrophages with staurosporine, a protein kinase (PKC) inhibitor, abolished phagocytosis, suggesting that PKC may be involved in the increase of serum-opsonized zymosan phagocytosis induced by BaV. -

This study was conducted to detect Rickettsia spp. in ticks collected from free-living and illegally trafficked reptiles from the Department of Córdoba, Colombia. Materials and Methods: During the period from October 2011 to July 2014, ticks belonging to the family Ixodidae were collected, preserved in 96% ethanol, identified using taxonomic keys, and pooled (between 1 and 14 ticks) according to sex, stage, host, and collected place for subsequent DNA extraction. -
