These “violence interrupters” (their job title) – who have credibility on the street because of their own personal histories – intervene in conflicts before the incidents explode into violence. Their work and their insights are informed by their own journeys, which, as each of them point out, defy easy characterization. Shot over the course of a year out of Kartemquin Films, THE INTERRUPTERS captures a period in Chicago when it became a national symbol for the violence in our cities. -
Director and Founding Member of Kartemquin Films, Gordon Quinn Has Been Making Documentaries for Over 40 Years
Director and founding member of Kartemquin Films, Gordon Quinn has been making documentaries for over 40 years. Roger Ebert, of the Chicago Sun Times, called his first film Home for Life (1966) "an extraordinarily moving documentary." With Home for Life Gordon established the direcon he would take for the next four decades, making cinéma vérité films that invesgate and crique society by documenng the unfolding lives of real people. At Kartemquin, Gordon created a legacy that is an inspiraon for young filmmakers and a home where they make social‐issue documentaries. Kartemquin’s best‐known film, Hoop Dreams (1994), execuve produced by Gordon, was released theatrically to unprecedented crical acclaim. The film follows two inner‐city high school basketball players for five years as they pursue their NBA dreams. Its many honors include: the Audience Award at the Sundance Film Fesval, The Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award, Chicago Film Crics Award ‐ Best Picture, Los Angeles Film Crics Associaon ‐ Best Documentary and an Academy Award Nominaon. Some of Gordon’s other film include Vietnam, Long Time Coming, Golub, Taylor Chain, The Last Pullman Car and the Chicago Maternity Center. He execuve produced or produced 5 Girls, Refrigerator Mothers, and Stevie. Mapping Stem Cell Research: Terra Incognita and The New Americans (he also directed the Palesnian segment of this award winning, inmate, seven‐hour PBS series). Recently he produced a film that deals with the human consequences genec medicine, In The Family, and execuve produced two films, one about community‐ based conservaon in Africa: Milking the Rhino, and At The Death House Door on a wrongful execuon in Texas. -

On the Verge of an Image: Considering Marjorie Keller The Gamble House October 8 – December 11, 2016 Curated by Alika Cooper and Anna Mayer Presented by LAND (Los Angeles Nomadic Division) ABOUT THE EXHIBITION: On the Verge of an Image: Considering Marjorie Keller is a group exhibition of sculpture, painting, photography, video, and performance centered on the themes present in the work of under-recognized avant-garde filmmaker Marjorie Keller (1950-1994), co-curated by Los Angeles-based artists Alika Cooper and Anna Mayer. Cooper and Mayer seek to establish the significance of Keller’s contributions to visual culture, and to make visible states of being that are difficult to articulate or are deliberately avoided by mainstream culture. The exhibition considers Keller’s insistence on occupying a position not easily consumed by a singular ideological agenda. Her films are significant in the way they make clear the primacy of bodily engagement as a place from which to critique the status quo. Cooper and Mayer have chosen contemporary and historical works that explore the material aspects of vision and the act of envisioning, along with artists who have created commissioned site-specific works, responding directly to these themes within the context of the Gamble House. Included works range from figurative/representational painting and film to process-based sculptural works and performances that register the presence and absence of bodies and objects. In honor of Keller’s complex relationship to the feminism of her time, On the Verge of an Image: Considering Marjorie Keller presents artworks from multiple perspectives and stances. The exhibition explores links between motifs and strategies emerging from Keller’s films, as well as the themes present in her work. -

PAUL INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES WINNERS OF JURIED COMPETITION AND AUDIENCE CHOICE AWARDS Specially designed awards given out for the first time to Minnesota-Made Films MINNEAPOLIS—April 27, 2015—The Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival (MSPIFF) announced the winners of the festival’s juried competition, handing out the first physical, artist-designed award statue in the festival’s history. The Festival, the largest film event in the region and one of the largest and longest running film events in the nation, showing over 200 feature, short length and documentary films from more than 60 countries, named the winners of the juried competition April 24, at the MSPIFF Filmmakers Lounge in St. Anthony Main. The awards were designed by Minnesota artist Timothy Jay Hamilton, who attended the ceremony to speak on the inspiration behind his design. The Kartemquin film features then and now interviews with organizers and participants of the boycott and never-released 16mm footage of the march and student interviews. ‘63 Boycott and its companion website, 63boycott.com, will provide a modern perspective on the impact and legacy of this forgotten history 50 years later as it reconnects the participants to each other and the event itself.
