The Parish Church—dedicated to S. Wilfrid—is about 31- miles slightly north-west of Wigan and stands about a quarter of a mile east of the great north road from Wigan to Carlisle. It certainly existed in 1206, as in a Final Concord of the 4th June of that year the Advowson of the Church was divided between Siward de Langtree and Ralph de Standish [Dr Farrer's Final Concords, Vol. 39, p. 25, Lancashire and Cheshire Record Society]. The earliest existing Register is here wholly printed. It contains 200 leaves of parchment each measuring 13 inches by 6 inches, has been recently rebound in a handsome morocco cover, and is, alto- www.flatcapsandbonnets.com gether, in a state of excellent preservation. • Life of Adam Smith
Life of Adam Smith John Rae Life of Adam Smith By JOHN RAE London MACMILLAN & CO. AND NEW YORK 1895 PREFACE The fullest account we possess of the life of Adam Smith is still the memoir which Dugald Stewart read to the Royal Society of Edinburgh on two evenings of the winter of 1793, and which he subsequently published as a separate work, with many additional illustrative notes, in 1810. Later biographers have made few, if any, fresh contributions to the subject. But in the century that has elapsed since Stewart wrote, many particulars about Smith and a number of his letters have incidentally and by very scattered channels found their way into print. It will be allowed to be generally desirable, in view of the continued if not even increasing importance of Smith, to obtain as complete a view of his career and work as it is still in our power to recover; and it appeared not unlikely that some useful contribution to this end might result if all those particulars and letters to which I have alluded were collected together, and if they were supplemented by such unpublished letters and information as it still remained possible to procure. In this last part of my task I have been greatly assisted by the Senatus of the University of Glasgow, who have most kindly supplied me with an extract of every passage in the College records bearing on Smith; by the Council of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, who have granted me every facility for using the Hume Correspondence, which is in their custody; and by the Senatus of the University of Edinburgh for a similar courtesy with regard to the Carlyle Correspondence and the David Laing MSS.

Methuen & Co., 18, Bury Street, London, W.C. 1891. [All rights reserved.] Richard Clay & Sons, Limited, London & Bungay. PREFACE. The history of any one of the older Colleges of Oxford extends over a period of time and embraces a variety of interests more than sufficient for a volume. The constitutional changes which it has experienced in the six, or four, or two centuries of its existence have been neither few nor slight. The Society living within its walls has reflected from age to age the social, religious, and intellectual conditions of the nation at large. Its many passing generations of teachers and students have left behind them a wealth of traditions honourable or the reverse.Yet it seems not impossible to combine in one volume a series of College histories.

  • Carvings and Inscriptions on Balliol Buildings
CARVINGS AND INSCRIPTIONS ON BALLIOL BUILDINGS Michael Groser at work in Balliol, c. 1960 1 INTRODUCTION The buildings on Balliol’s Broad Street site are embellished externally with many carvings and a few inscriptions. The carvings are very varied – realistic busts, caricatures, grotesques, heraldic shields and devices, and decorative flourishes. Very little has ever been recorded about any of them. This is an attempt to compile a catalogue, starting just inside Trinity Front Quadrangle and proceeding along Broad Street and Magdalen Street to our Back Gate, entering the College there, working round the Garden Quadrangle, into the Fellows’ Garden, going through the Chapel passage and finishing in our Front Quadrangle. Minor decorative flourishes, of which there are many, especially on the Brackenbury Buildings, are not included but otherwise I hope, without complete confidence, that nothing has been missed. The masons who carved the heraldic shields usually used conventional hatchings to indicate colours and metals. The commonest are shown in the following key: In the language of heraldry, the sinister side of a shield is on the right hand side when viewed from the front, and the dexter side is seen on the left. If two coats of arms are displayed on a shield divided down the middle, they are said to be impaled. When the arms of a man and wife are impaled, his arms are normally placed on the dexter side with hers on the sinister side. When the arms of an office are impaled with those of an office-holder, his are placed on the sinister side. I hope that is sufficient for most readers to understand the essence of my notes, but reference to heraldic textbooks may be necessary.

At the Ballantyne Press PREFACE An apology and an explanation may not be amiss from one who presents " a thrice-told tale " in yet another form. To the shade of Dr. Henry Savage my excuse is, that Balliofergus has been out of print for two centuries, in which space of time a good deal has happened to the society over which he presided. The Baroness de Paravicini and Mr. R. L. Poole, to both of whom I take this oppor- tunity of expressing my indebtedness, will, I trust, pardon me for attempting to elucidate those parts of the College history on which their inclinations or their publishers forbade them to write at length. My grateful thanks are due to the Master and Fellows of Balliol, first in their collective capacity, for allowing me a complete freedom of access to their records, and secondly as individuals, for the great kindness which they have shown on many occasions in answering a number of very tedious questions. A list of the chief authorities, manuscript and printed. vi PREFACE which have been consulted in writing these pages will be found in an Appendix at the end of the volume.
