Monday, May 24, 2021 | No. 169 When Star Wars opened May 25, 1977 no one but Steven Spielberg thought it would be a hit. George Lucas had been turned down by Universal, United Artists and Disney before pitching 20th Century Fox his sci-fi epic inspired by 1930's serials like Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers, the 1966 TV series Star Trek and Frank Herbert's 1965 novel Dune. Fox creative affairs chief Alan Ladd, Jr. greenlighted SW, but Fox's distribution arm never considered it a likely hit. Fox marketers wanted to change the title because moviegoers might think Star Wars was about the Vietnam War or, perhaps, superstars Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton's divorce. When Lucas screened a rough cut for some director pals, they weren't impressed. Brian De Palma reportedly called it the "worst movie" ever made. Spielberg, however, predicted SW would be "the biggest movie of all time." Lucas thought SW was doomed and skipped its premiere to vacation with Spielberg in Hawaii where they heard SW was a boxoffice phenomenon and then came up with a new project to do together -- Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), the first Indiana Jones blockbuster. Exhibitors were reluctant to book SW, thinking only kids and sci-fi buffs would buy tickets, so it opened at just 32 theatres. Two days later, it was in 43 theatres and a week later in 157. It peaked in mid-August at 1,096, a very wide run then. Produced for $11 million, its original release did $461 million domestically and $196 million abroad – huge numbers at Theatrical Poster for Star Wars, the time.

  • Three Visions, One World a Japanese Artist and Two Pixar Colleagues Exhibit Side by Side by Alex Chun
Three visions, one world A Japanese artist and two Pixar colleagues exhibit side by side by Alex Chun Nov 17, 2005 SINCE 2001, Pixar Animation artists Ronnie Del Carmen and Enrico Casarosa have channeled their creative talents into feature films such as the Academy Award-winning "Finding Nemo" and the upcoming "Cars." Their artistic drive, however, doesn't stop when they head for home. With what little time and energy they have left over, Del Carmen and Casarosa have made names for themselves as artists in their own right. This Saturday, Alhambra's Gallery Nucleus will begin exhibiting their drawings and paintings in a show titled "3 Trees Make a Forest." The title of the show has a dual meaning, notes Casarosa, a 34- year-old from Italy who also worked as a storyboard artist on Blue Sky Studio's "Ice Age." Heavily influenced by Japanese culture, Casarosa discovered that the Japanese kanji character for forest is composed of three repeating symbols, each the kanji for tree. More important, the title reflects the fact that Del Carmen and Casarosa's friend Tadahiro Uesugi is coming to the U.S. from Japan for the first time to take part in the show. In Japan, Uesugi is known for working as an assistant to manga artist Jiro Taniguchi and for his fashion illustrations in women's magazines; in the U.S., Uesugi, 39, has attained almost cult-like status within the tightknit animation community. As an artist, "Tadahiro is in a class by himself," says Del Carmen, 45, who was born and raised in the Philippines and won an Annie Award as a storyboard artist for DreamWorks' "Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron." "When I first looked at his work, I was immediately fascinated because it seemed to be of a certain time and place, 1960s France, with all these striking images of girls with long necks, long limbs and short skirts walking in profile," Del Carmen adds.

  • ADVANCE Disney and Pixar's Original Feature Film “Luca” Is a Fun and Heartwarming Story About Friendship, Stepping out Of
ADVANCE Disney and Pixar’s original feature film “Luca” is a fun and heartwarming story about friendship, stepping out of your comfort zone and two teenage sea monsters who experience a life-changing summer. “This movie is about the friendships that change us,” says director Enrico Casarosa. “It’s a love letter to the summers of our youth—those formative years when you’re finding yourself.” Adds producer Andrea Warren, “It’s a magical coming-of-age-story. It’s about remembering the people who shaped us along the way.” Set in a beautiful seaside town on the Italian Riviera, “Luca” is a story about one boy experiencing an unforgettable summer filled with gelato, pasta and endless scooter rides. Luca shares these adventures with his newfound best friend, Alberto, but all the fun is threatened by a deeply-held secret: they are both sea monsters from another world just below the water’s surface. “Luca is a shy, polite, introverted, rule-following kid who has a secret desire to see the world and learn all he can,” says screenwriter Jesse Andrews. “But he’s been told his whole life that sea monsters should never go above the surface of the water where all the interesting stuff seems to be happening.” So it’s no surprise that Luca harbors a secret fascination with all things human. His curiosity is especially sparked when he discovers items that have floated down from the surface. “Luca knows nothing of the surface,” says screenwriter Mike Jones. “So these items are glimpses of another world—as if it were an object of an extraterrestrial landing on Earth.
