Signed _________________________________________________ ii Abstract Nickolas Muray, Environmental Portraiture, Vanity Fair by Corser du Pont Photographic Preservation and Collections Management, Master of Arts, 2010, Ryerson University, Toronto, Ontario, in coordination with George Eastman House International Museum of Photography and Film, Rochester, New York. This thesis is a case study of five environmental portraits made in Europe by New York studio photographer Nickolas Muray (1892-1965) for a 1926 commission by Vanity Fair magazine (1913-1936). The thesis, in the form of a sixty-three page illustrated essay, describes the circumstances of his photographic production, and the magazineʼs subsequent use of his photographs. -

Nickolas Muray: An Inventory of His Collection of Mexican Art at the Harry Ransom Center Descriptive Summary Creator: Muray, Nickolas, 1892-1965 Title: Nickolas Muray Collection of Mexican Art Dates: 1925-1954 Extent: 9 boxes, 12 framed paintings, 1 framed drawing, 2 flat-file folders (103 items) Abstract: The collection contains 103 pieces of artwork assembled by Nickolas Muray. Ninety of the works are by Miguel Covarrubias, including his works as an artist, caricaturist, book illustrator, and ballet set designer. The rest of the collection is composed of works by Frida Kahlo, Rufino Tamayo, and several other Mexican artists. Access: Open for research. A minimum of twenty-four hours is required to pull art materials to the Reading Room. Administrative Information Acquisition: Purchase (R2738), 1965 Processed by: Helen Young, 2002 Repository: Harry Ransom Center, The University of Texas at Austin Muray, Nickolas, 1892-1965 Biographical Sketch Nickolas Muray was born February 15, 1892, in Szeged, Hungary. He attended a graphic arts school in Budapest, where he studied lithography, photoengraving, and photography. After earning an International Engraver's Certificate, Muray took a three-year course in color photoengraving in Berlin, where, among other things, he learned to make color filters. At the end of his course, he went to work for the publishing company Ullstein. In 1913, with the threat of war in Europe, Muray sailed to New York City, and was able to find work immediately in Brooklyn as a color printer. He was soon working for Condé Nast as a photoengraver working with color separations and half-tone negatives. -
129 Macdougal Street Landmark Designation Report
Landmarks Preservation Commission June 8, 2004, Designation List 354 LP-2150 129 MACDOUGAL STREET HOUSE, Manhattan. Built c. 1828-29. Landmark Site: Borough of Manhattan Tax Map Block 543, Lot 58. On April 20, 2004, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the 129 MacDougal Street House and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No. 3). The hearing had been duly advertised in accordance with the provisions of Jaw. Nine people spoke in favor of designation, including representatives of State Senator Thomas K. Duane, State Assemblymember Deborah J. Glick, Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation, Historic Districts Council, Municipal Art Society, and New York Landmarks Conservancy. In addition, the Commission received several letters in support of designation, including those from Manhattan Community Board 2, the Northeast Office of the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the Preservation League of New York State. The Commission previously held a public hearing on the 129 MacDougal Street House (LP-0199) in 1966. Summary The rowhouse at 129 MacDougal Street in Greenwich Village was constructed c. 1828-29 in the Federal style, characterized by its 2-1/2-story height, Flemish bond brickwork, low stoop with wrought-ironwork, entrance with Ionic columns, entablature and transom, molded lintels with end blocks, peaked roof, molded cornice, and pedimented double dormers. This was one of four houses (Nos. 125-131) speculatively built on lots owned by Alonzo Alwyn Alvord, a downtown hat merchant, as the area around Washington Square (converted from a potter's field in 1826-28) was being developed as an elite residential enclave.
