Ten Pearls and Two Rubies Scholarship

The Ten Pearls and Two Rubies Scholarship will be awarded to a member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., who is currently enrolled in a graduate program. The eligible soror must be in pursuit of a career in the field of education, in addition to exemplifying our motto of “Greater Service, Greater Progress!”

Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. was organized on November 12, 1922 in , by seven school teachers: Mary Lou Allison Gardner Little, Dorothy Hanley Whiteside, Vivian Irene White Marbury, Nannie Mae Gahn Johnson, Hattie Mae Dulin Redford, Bessie M. Downey Martin, and Cubena McClure. In a time when education for was difficult to attain, the founders of Sigma Gamma Rho became educators. They believed that self-respect, knowledge and discipline gained through study would help individuals to recognize their duty and responsibility to their society. Thus, Sigma Gamma Rho was founded on the precept of education and continues to promote and encourage high scholastic attainment. The Kappa Nu Sigma chapter was chartered on October 13, 2007 to answer the call to service in the San Fernando Valley and Greater Los Angeles area through sisterhood and scholarship.

SCHOLARSHIP ELIGIBILITY AND REQUIREMENTS

1. Completion of the scholarship application form in blue or black ink. 2. Proof of good financial standing on the national, regional, and local levels. 3. Residency in the Western Region during the 2017-2018 sorority year. 4. Current enrollment in a graduate level (or higher) teaching credential program in the field of education. 5. An official graduate school transcript. 6. Possession of a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. 7. Three (3) letters of recommendation - Two (2) of the letters of recommendation must come from one of the following individuals or organizations: teacher(s), school official(s), employer(s), and/or community service representative(s) and must be typed on official letterhead. One (1) letter must come from a member in good financial standing, on all three levels, with the sorority. Letters of recommendation cannot come from family members, even if the family member is a soror. Recommendation letters must be attached to the application. 8. Completion of the required essay.

1. Grade Point Average - 20 pts. 2. 3 Letters of Recommendation – 15 pts. 3. Sorority Activities – 25 pts. 4. Extra-Curricular and/or Community Service Activities – 20 pts. 5. Evidence of Academic / Leadership Awards or Recognition –20 pts. 6. Essay – 100 pts.

Notification to Applicants

The Ten Pearls and Two Rubies Scholarship is not a renewable scholarship. The Award recipient will be notified no later than Friday, May 4, 2018 by email and/or first class mail. Upon notification, recipients are required to notify Kappa Nu Sigma of their acceptance of the scholarship and confirm their reservation to the Academic Achievement Brunch by Friday, May 18, 2018. Note: Payment will be remitted at the Brunch, which will be held in June of 2018.
