APPOINTMENT The Queen Victoria Hospital has a national and international reputation as a training centre in its specialist subjects. The Orthodontic Department provides a specialist service for an extensive range of patients, including severe dental and skeletal malocclusions, cleft lip and palate patients, and other facial anomalies.

The postholder is given the opportunity to treat complicated cases with a complete range of orthodontic products and the laboratory back up of experienced Orthodontic Technicians. Cephalometric computer software is available. Weekly orthognathic joint clinics allow discussion and treatment planning with maxillofacial colleagues.

Facial anomalies and cleft lip and palate clinics are routinely attended by Plastic Surgeons, Maxillofacial Surgeons, Orthodontists and Speech Therapists.

Multidisciplinary clinics are held with Restorative Consultants as well as the Sleep Studies Unit at QVH.

GENERAL INFORMATION The Queen Victoria Hospital was built as a community hospital in the 1930s and developed as a specialist unit during World War II. It is a highly successful hospital with an international reputation for providing specialist reconstructive services. The Trust also provides high quality community healthcare services to the local population in East Grinstead and the surrounding area.

QVH is a comparatively small NHS hospital with just over 900 staff and a turnover of £55m. There are 111 beds serving a population of over four million people.

QVH has a world-class clinical reputation and is the Regional Centre for Burns, reconstructive Plastic and Maxillofacial Surgery, Orthodontics and Corneo . The Minor Injuries Unit is led by emergency nurse practitioners and is supported by nurses and plaster technicians.

There are 18 consultant plastic surgeons, nine consultant maxillofacial surgeons, three consultant ophthalmic surgeons and 18 consultant anaesthetists. The sub-specialities, which generate the most work, are head and neck, breast and in adults, and trauma and hand surgery in children; also surgery in the acutely burned patient and burns-related plastic and reconstructive surgery in adults and children. Specialised trauma, referred from accident and emergency units in the region, constitutes a significant proportion of the overall surgical load.

Sub-specialty interests of the hospital include head and neck oncological surgery. The hospital has been designated as the Oncological Surgical Centre for Head and Neck malignancy for West Kent. Specialised facial trauma, referred from Accident and Emergency Departments constitutes a significant proportion of the overall surgical load.

The Hospital has ten theatres; six main theatres, two day surgery theatres, one hand surgery theatre and a Burns Unit theatre. There are morning and afternoon sessions every weekday for trauma; burns surgery is normally carried out in the Burns Unit. This has allowed night time operating to be minimised in line with CEPOD.

Close to the main theatre suite, a further operating theatre is sited in the self-contained Day Surgery Unit. In addition to the Queen Victoria Hospital based surgeons, consultants from in the surrounding area use this facility to perform day-care surgical procedures in a variety of specialties including: General Surgery, Cardiology, Dermatology, ENT, Orthopaedics, General and Paediatric Medicine as a service to the local community.

DEPARTMENT INFORMATION The Department of Orthodontics deals with the full range of orthodontic treatments. The postholder will be involved in the diagnosis and treatment of orthodontic patients and the caseload includes moderate to severe malocclusions, combined oral surgery/orthodontic cases and combined restorative/orthodontic cases

It has a dedicated out-patient department which includes a fully equipped maxillofacial and orthodontic laboratory and includes an integrated operating theatre. The post-holder will be provided with office space and IT support.

A combined clinic for Head and Neck Oncology occurs regularly along with an MDT meeting.

A monthly Implant Clinic is also undertaken with the visiting Consultant in Restorative Dentistry.

Other Staff There are six full-time and one part time Maxillofacial technicians carrying out a full range of maxillofacial technical and prosthetic work. In addition there are three full time Orthodontic technicians.

The Maxillofacial Unit is a two storey building which provides Out Patient facilities for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Orthodontics. There is a shared office for the use of trainee staff, and full secretarial services are provided. The unit also houses a fully equipped Maxillofacial laboratory.

Operating Facilities The Hospital has ten theatres; six main theatres, two day surgery theatres, one hand surgery theatre and a Burns Unit theatre. Rota Commitment Currently the hours of duty are the base working week of 40 hours. Hours of duty may be varied prior to commencement of post according to the needs of the service. Any variation will be in line with junior doctor hours and will be notified on appointment or in the Contract of Employment.

TEACHING Consultant led clinical teaching and activities are held throughout the three year appointment at the Queen Victoria Hospital. Small group tutorials are held regularly.

In addition to the departmental facilities, the Hospital has its own library which is staffed by a professional librarian and two part-time assistants. In all, there are over 3000 books and 60 current journals. The Library has several PCs connected to the n3 network. Access is available to registered users twenty four hours a day.

There are opportunities for IT training and a broad range of opportunities for other types of learning in the Staff Development Centre, which is in close proximity to the Anaesthetic Department.

There is an excellent Medical Photography department with a slide library housing over 60,000 catalogued slides illustrating surgical, anaesthetic and historical aspects of the hospital. These are available on loan for educational purposes. There are slide-making and video facilities. The Department has recently embraced digital photographic technology, allowing access to many images via the Queen Victoria Hospital Intranet.

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT The Blond McIndoe Centre for Medical Research was founded in 1961 to pursue research relevant to the Queen Victoria Hospital. The centre is now run a consortium charity, made up of interests from the Queen Victoria Hospital itself, Brighton University, the University Medical School in Brighton and Northwick Park. Our Research and Development (R&D) strategy has recently been widened to include a new avenue of research exploring the psychosocial aspects of both trauma and elective surgery. This new emphasis draws on the work of many of the Trust's renowned surgical specialties,

AUDIT There is an active audit programme in which all junior doctors are expected to actively participate, along with involvement with research projects undertaken in the Orthodontic Department as required.

The postholder is expected to participate and assist in departmental open meetings and cleft lip and palate study days as appropriate and to learn the relevant computer software for orthodontic audit programme and computerised planning of surgical cases.

LOCAL FACILITIES The surrounding district of East Grinstead is famous for its beautiful countryside, being on the edge of the Ashdown Forest on the Sussex Weald. There is a train service to London and Gatwick Airport is about 10 miles away. Brighton and the coast are about 30 miles distance. There are several golf courses nearby and riding and sailing are easily available. On site there is a Medical Staff Club, a Staff Social Club and a multi surface tennis court.

This would normally be a pathology report from a laboratory in the UK or alternatively a report from another NHS Occupational Health Department within the UK. It will not be possible to confirm this appointment unless this condition is met. Before starting work you may therefore need to attend the Occupational Health Department for assessment. ASPECT OF JOB DETAILS Annual Leave Annual leave entitlement is 30 days for a full year following commencement, to be taken within the contract period in normal circumstances, subject to the approval of the Consultant and the exigencies of the service.
